Summary

What if Shane didn't check to see if the bathroom was empty at the MLH awards show in Vegas. What if someone was in there and overheard everything and ended up questioning everything he knew.

Shane was pissed, he was so unbelievably angry at Rozanov for being so fucking fine about everything but also not texting him back for six whole months. Then just walking on stage at this stupid award show and acting all Rozanov.

It pissed him off that Ilya had followed him into the bathroom too, even if that is what he was hoping for. It pissed him off that he had followed so quickly that Shane hadn’t even had the chance to check if they were alone before the Russian came in.

My sister asked me to write this then proceeded to sit and watch as I wrote this whole fic in like 30 minutes - I hope you enjoy and there might be a part 2 at some point...

Chapter 1

Shane was pissed, he was so unbelievably angry at Rozanov for being so fucking fine about everything but also not texting him back for six whole months. Then just walking on stage at this stupid award show and acting all Rozanov.

It pissed him off that Ilya had followed him into the bathroom too, even if that is what he was hoping for. It pissed him off that he had followed so quickly that Shane hadn’t even had the chance to check if they were alone before the Russian came in.

They should have checked, at least it wasn’t someone who would tell the world about whatever it was they had going on.

Wyatt Hayes wishes they had checked too, because now he was stuck with his feet up on the toilet seat trying not to make any noise so the two best players in the league wouldn’t know he could hear them arguing about literally having sex.

He didn’t really want to hear about anyone’s sex life except his and Lisa’s. But now he was stuck and he couldn’t leave until they did. And there was nothing he could do to not hear what they were saying.

“What the fuck do you want Rozanov? You haven’t answered a text from me in like 6 months. You won't even acknowledge I exist unless theres a fucking camera pointed at us and even that's for a fucking clown show. So yeah, what the fuck do you actually want from me?” that was Hollander, Wyatt thought.

“I want you to suck my dick” Rozanov replied in his usual cocky voice.

And WHAT? He thought, Roz wants Hollander to suck his dick? Surely not.

He took his phone out of his pocket and brought up the group chat he had with Lisa; His sister, Kristy; and her wife, Eve. He had to tell someone what he was hearing and if he could trust anyone, it was these three women.

OMG you will never guess what i am hearing right now

 

“Fuck you, you suck my dick” Shane retorted

Holy shit this was getting more insane by the second.

“Later” Rozanov almost whispered but he could still, unfortunately, hear. He couldn’t believe it.

Turning his phone off Wyatt cautiously opened the door hoping that Hollander and Rozanov really had left. He didn’t want to scare them or make them think he was going to spill their secret relationship or whatever it was to the world.

Returning to his table, he glanced towards the Metro’s table packed with players and their girlfriends and wives, Hollander was sitting alone looking almost as if he had been crying. And if he hadn’t known better, that's what he would have assumed, and also if he didn’t keep taking alternating glances between his phone and the boston table at the other side of the hall. He was starting to see Eve’s point, they were so obvious.

He was sure he would be able to see it in everything they did now and he wasn’t sure how he felt knowing he was the only player to know, well unless he trusted the Scott Hunter also knew and if Eve could tell there was something between the two biggest rivals in the league then he was inclined to believe this too. He supposed he would be looking out for that too, now.

The following few days were tense waiting for their next practice, no one knew if Roz was going to be there after what happened. He hadn't replied to any of the supportive messages the rest of the team had put in the Group Chat but he had read them.

He had liked the post Harris had made to say the whole team supported him and Shane and anyone else in the queer community, but there had been no comments from the Metros side. And that worried Wyatt.

He didn’t know why. He didn’t even know Hollander that well, only meeting a couple of times on the ice. And he couldn’t see why Montreal would let the best player on their team go over this. Simply over who he loved, and had for a while.

Walking into the locker room he relaxed at the usual level of noise and familiar Russian shouting. What he didn’t like however was the look on said Russian’s face.

Rozanov looked like he wanted to murder someone, more than he usually did. And that was never good, because even though he never said anything, Wyatt had come to recognise that look as one that only appeared when something had happened to Hollander.

“Hey Roz, you good? I know this is like really shit for you both, but you know we're all here for you right?” He asked, cautiously approaching.

“Yes I know. That is problem” he muttered.

“How is that a problem? I mean we can stop being supportive if you want…” Bood added looking confused.

“No is not that. I have been here for not even 2 years and you are all okay with everything. Shane has been with Montreal since Rookie season and they are being assholes. All of them except Pike.”

“That's really rough man, is he okay?” Wyatt asked.

“No. Stupid coach and stupid team and stupid managers trying to make him say it was fake and not real. Team have been assholes since he told them he was gay. But he would not go anywhere. Now they want to trade him.” Ilya kicked the bench so hard it slid into the wall kit falling off as it went.

“They want to trade him just for this? Surely they can't do that”

“No they want to trade because he is not “good with team anymore” and no trust and shit like that.”

“That's bullshit! Everyone is going to see right through that”

“Yes. I did not want to come today but Shane made me. Said I didn't need to babysit him. So I drove him to parents house to prove is not what I was doing. Let them babysit and he will see I was just being worried.”

“Its good that he's not alone though, doesn't he have practice?”

“They said he is suspended until they “sort things out” is bullshit. They are working trade.”

“Who's getting traded?” Wiebe's voice boomed over the chatter.

“Hollander, Montreal are kicking him after what happened” Bood cut in as Ilya took a deep breath that seemed like he was trying to calm himself down.

It didn't look like it was working.

“To where? Why would they do that? He's their best player.”

“They have not made a deal. He is too good, too expensive and needs at least two players to make up for him.” Ilya said, pride clear in his voice.

“Good to know,” Wiebe trailed off in thought before abruptly leaving the room.

“That was odd, even for him.” Hayes said.

“You don't think he's gonna try…” Zane stopped mid thought, catching Wyatt's eye.

“I hope so, maybe trade “you know who” over there” he said, jerking his head back towards the only player that had been suspiciously standoffish towards their captain lately.

“Good he's starting to piss me off. Might fight him today” Ilya whispered right behind them making both players jump and almost scream.

Almost, neither would ever admit that they did actually scream, just a little.

“Well as long as they don’t take Haasy, I actually like that kid. He’s got potential” Wyatt said.

“Who’s taking me where?” Luca looked up panicked.

“They’re sending you to Montreal so we can get Hollander.” Bood whispered teasingly into Luca’s ear

The three men laughed loudly at the immediate look of anger and stress.

“No way am I going there, they’re a bunch of assholes. Except Hollander of course, sorry cap. But after what they’re doing. No way am I going there. Ever.”

“Ah good, you can stay then. We just get rid of “you know who” over there” Ilya laughed quoting Hayes’ earlier statement.

After practice the team spilled back into the locker room a lot more jovial than before. Talking loudly and excitedly optimistic for their next game finally having some hope that they might win. And if Ilya and Bood’s plans worked they would get a lot more players who could actually play well together, and now, that plan could even include Shane. Then they really would be an unstoppable team.

They could go from being the worst team in the league to the best. They could win every game, get to the play offs every year, win the cup, move in together, get married-. Ilya cut his thoughts off before he got too carried away and pulled out his phone to text Shane. Opening his messages he laughed out loud drawing the attention of some of his team mates.

“Yeah sure I will come, I will bring Shane too but be nice if you make him sad I kill you all. Painfully. Slowly.”

“Good to know…Bood and Cass are coming and so is Haasy.”

“I am?” God, Illya thought, was Haas ever not confused in their conversations.

“Yes, but you’re bringing the beer.” Haas blinked a couple of times then nodded and continued getting dressed.

“Okay I will see you soon.”

They were all very drunk last night when Lisa made the group chat, so much so that none of them questioned it at all. Not until the next morning when they woke up in various places around the Hayes’ lounge to a chat with a series of photos from the night before.

Following recent events I would like to come on here to let everyone know the truth and stop some of the speculation. I have tried to keep hockey and my private life separate for a long time but unfortunately some people are not able to accept this. Although the choice to come out was taken from us, Ilya and I would like to say thank you to everyone who supported us with this, especially to the family, friends and fans that have stuck with us over the course of our relationship so far.

 

That being said, I would like to clarify a few things. Neither one of us would ever throw a game to let the other win, we never have and we never will, and for that to be assumed by some people I have called family for my entire career hurt me greatly. I hope that if anyone else who is hiding who they truly are knows that there are people out there who will accept and love you for who you are. As a very good (and new) friend told me: “you just have to remember that you do have people who care for you and are genuinely happy and supportive of you. You just had to meet us first.” So just remember that if you are feeling alone and nothing has gone to plan, there are people who will support you no matter what. You just have to find them. 

 

I would also like to say I am very excited to join a team I know will love and support both me and Ilya in the coming season (or maybe sooner). After nearly a decade together-ish it will be an honour to finally play on the same team as my Fiancé. @ottawacentaursoffical.
