being cool with trans women doesn’t mean you think men should play in women’s sports

😂 no in this case he did actually say that

Notes

This includes some mention of sexual assault (as a concept, not a specific instance) and also the "should trans women be allowed to play in women's sports" debate.

[Surreptitious and slightly shaky video, zoomed in an awkward amount, of Shane Hollander and Rose Landry talking in a coffee shop. The audio isn’t great but there are subtitles showing what they are saying.]

Hollander: —just don’t get why people keep asking me about women’s sports. Why do they think I care about golf? Who the fuck cares about golf?

Landry: You know this is such a hot issue, and, well, you are a queer icon now.

[Hollander leans down like he’s going to hit his head against the table, stops, grimaces, then straightens out again. He wets a napkin and wipes something off on the table.]

Hollander: Look, I genuinely do not care who plays in women’s sports. I don’t care if a trans woman plays in women’s hockey. I don’t care if a man plays in women’s hockey. What the fuck is it my problem?

[Landry smiles at him.]

Landry: That’s very progressive of you.

Hollander (dubiously): I guess? If someone wants to get paid less money to play with shittier checking rules, that should be their problem, not mine.

Landry: And you don’t think that men would dominate in women’s hockey because men are bigger? Stronger?

[Hollander blinks at Landry. He looks down at himself. He looks back up at Landry.]

Hollander: Rose, a solid third of the women in the PWHL are bigger than me. What the fuck does that have to do with anything?

[Video of a media scrum after an Ottawa vs Tampa game. Everyone looks exhausted.]

Reporter 1: Hollander, can you elaborate on your recent statements saying that men should be allowed to play in women’s hockey?

Hollander: I want to be clear that I did not make a statement, video of a conversation I was having with a friend was posted online. But to answer your question, I want to first clarify that I was not intending to in any way imply transgender women are men. I think all women have a place in women’s sports, just as all men have a place in men’s sports.

[The words sound a little rehearsed.]

Hollander: Second, I stand by what I said: I do not care if men play in women’s hockey. I don’t understand why they would want to—it’s lower pay, worse facilities, less visibility, and some of the rule differences would be annoying—but if a man wanted to try in the PWHL draft and was drafted by a team, I don’t care.

Reporter 2: Some people are saying that this would increase the risk of sexual violence in locker rooms.

Hollander (blankly): If a man can’t share a locker room with a woman without raping her I think we have bigger problems than whether he plays hockey with her.

Reporter 2: You have to admit that having a straight man in a room of women—

Hollander: I am a gay man who shares a locker room with other men, and I have never sexually assaulted any of them.

Reporter 2: Yes, but—

Hollander: If a man can’t share a locker room with a woman without raping her than it sounds like he belongs in jail, which makes this whole conversation about whether or not he should be playing hockey a little moot, no? Anyway, I don’t understand why you all keep asking me about who should play in women’s sports. Shouldn’t you be asking the women that?

[Video of Shane Hollander standing near a bench, checking his phone. He is clearly waiting for someone. A perky blonde with a microphone walks up to him, smiling with very white teeth and no visible smile lines anywhere on her very smooth forehead. She is clearly not who he is waiting for.]

Blonde: Shane Hollander, I am Rebecca Ainsley with Fight for the Family Network. I wanted to ask you today about—

Hollander: Nope.

[Hollander turns and walks away.]

[Video of Shane Hollander standing near a different bench, checking his phone. He is clearly waiting for someone. A perky brunette with a microphone walks up to him, smiling with very white teeth and no visible smile lines anywhere on her very smooth forehead. She is clearly not who he is waiting for.]

Brunette: Shane Hollander, I am Maria Schultz with Fight for the Family Network. I wanted to ask you today about—

Hollander: Still no.

[Hollander turns and walks away.]

[Video of Hollander standing in a rink, in full equipment except for a helmet.]

Hollander: I would like to refer all future questions about who should play in women’s sports to a more appropriate resource.

[The camera pans a foot to the right to show Charlotte Boseau, also in full equipment except for a helmet. With her goalie padding, she looks hulking. She smiles, showing teeth. It does not look welcoming.]
