Chapter Notes
The idea for this fic came from a couple of things
1) A conversation I had with a friend about One Direction and Larry Stylinson a couple days ago — what if, at some point in the future, Harry or Louis reveal that one of them was in fact in a secret gay relationship while the band was active—just not with each other; (“Like imagine if the queer couple in question was actually Louis and Zayn or something I’d pay to see the Larry shipper meltdown” “I think the internet might crash worldwide that day”).
2) A conversation I had with a hockey fan friend of mine around the height of the Crosby-Ovechkin rivalry years ago, where I made a enemies-to-lovers joke (completely unseriously) about them,and he told me that if I had to ship Crosby with any other player in the NHL, a teammates-to-lovers arc with Evgeni Malkin made wayyy more sense)
This fic was also def influenced by any social media fic that has referenced Shayden as being a competitive ship to Hollanov in the GC/HR universe. Off the top of my head, I’m thinking of #shaydenreal by arenasoundsystem but there’s definitely others too <3
This work is a bit of my own love letter to fandom and fan culture — there's a lot of small references to things throughout the year that I remember being into/were big at the time; I also tried my best not to use 2025 slang in, say 2012, but I don't think I succeeded too well at that.
This mostly follows book canon (except where I may have muddled book and show events bc I'll be honest I haven't reread HR fully since 2019) and contains spoilers for The Long Game!

The star discussed his struggles with insomnia over the summer, revealing that it stemmed from no longer sharing a room with fellow Voyageurs teammate and captain Shane Hollander.
“On the road, you get so used to living with someone else, you know. And Shane’s such a chill guy roommate too, no snoring or anything. His breathing was honestly like white noise to me—sent me straight to sleep on nights we shared the same room. I genuinely missed it over the summer.”

Interviewer: Do you think the existence of Shayden helped paved the way for you two? Did it give you hope that there is a sizable community that would support you were you to come out?
Shane: I’ll be honest, no. In fact, it might have made things harder. [He sighs] Despite what a lot of people seem to think, our secrecy actually had very little to do with my sexual orientation. Sure, the NHL isn’t the most LGBT+ friendly organization in the world, as organized sports in general isn’t, but between Scott Hunter’s incredible work with inclusive organizations like Trevor Project and more LGBTQ+ issues coming to mainstream conversations both inside and outside sports, the sexuality piece became much less of a deal than it was when we first started as rookies. I came out to my team a couple of years ago, and it wasn’t too bad. But the whole Shayden thing just terrified me even more because it was yet another way that the world saw me that I would inevitably disappoint my fans.

Shane: Ilya is obsessed with the online fanfiction about us for some reason — he loves to read them. I really don't understand the appeal, both from those writing these, uh, works, and also as a reader. He once showed me this one story where Hayden and I have supposedly been in a relationship since our rookie year, and I guess the entire story is about us hiding it through the years. I didn't scroll too far I'll admit [He laughs nervously]. But all of it was scarily similar to the whole, uh, situation with me and Ilya's relationship, and the timeline, and the secrecy. And the parts that I did read, about this fake Shane who comforted this fake Hayden — who can I just say, is one of the most confident and chill guys I know, it's what makes him such a good friend — through panic attacks and spoke pet names in Japanese to him and dreamed about taking him to Tokyo, I was just thinking wow, is this really how they see me? I mean, I don’t even speak Japanese. I've never been to Tokyo, and yeah it would be cool to go, with my heritage and all, but it's not my dream destination, if you know what I mean. And just, this is going to sound so stupid, I apologize in advance, but if there’s anyone getting comforted in any of my relationships, it’s me.
Ilya: [laughs] This made me laugh too, when I read. Shane is a beautiful anxious flower of a person. Is why part of why I love him so much.
Shane: Yeah exactly. My anxiety is pretty-known among those who know me well. So to see this confident, dominant captain persona that all these fans seemed to project upon me and believe wholeheartedly — I don’t know, it was really weird. It made me feel like revealing my relationship with Ilya, revealing that I’m not the man these hundreds of thousands of people thought I was — would be the end of everything.

some suspensions of disbelief needed for reading: the notion that shane hollander would ever read a fanfiction about himself let alone BRING IT UP in an interview but I honestly needed to make this OOC thing happen since the interview scene was a good 30% of my reason for writing the fic
as someone who has been in numerous fandoms where rpf is a big thing, I find it fascinating to consider the concept of creators reading about fics that retell their stories in the real world — not, harry styles loves louis tomlinson in an completely different alternative universe where they're princes or wizards but fics that are supposedly set in our world that claim to portray them “accurately". I think for shane, reading a fic that retells his supposed love story with hayden would be SUCH a psychologically distressing experience, in part bc of how similar that story is to him and ilya's story! the fact that there are people who imagine him as a gay hockey player, but they fundamentally see him as a top, or as this responsible captain who could still never fall in love w a supposed asshole like ilya rozanov. It's psychologially disorienting to be faced with the gap between how you perceive yourself and how the world perceives you! sorry I could go on and on about this but I guess ultimate point really is l’enfer c’est les autres / hell is other people and their gazes. guess u were right sometimes sartre

Shane sets his jaw, face taut. “How was it?”
The other man’s stance is stiff, his expression chilled. He’s pointedly glancing away from Hayden as if– as if he can’t bear to look at him. Hayden doesn’t know what will slowly kill him sooner, the seconds that Shane spends looking away, or the seconds that will countdown after he does.
“What?” Hayden whispers, looking up at him from the bed.
“How was it? Fucking her?”
Shane turns to look at him, a snide slant to his lips that Hayden has never seen before on his sunshine, golden captain, and he– he doesn’t know what to do. Doesn’t know what he can do, to make this better. He wants to turn back time, to the Hayden who Shane loved, the Hayden that Shane would never look at like this. The Hayden that would never betray Shane by sleeping with another woman.
Even if, Hayden thinks mulishly to himself, it was technically allowed under their arrangement. Never once had they promised exclusivity to each other. But it’s like Jackie had told him, lying naked in the bed next to him, cigarette in her fingers, looking wickedly beautiful in the moonlight streaming in through the window. Unbearably gorgeous, and yet somehow not someone he really, truly wanted.
With stuff like this, it doesn’t really matter whether or not it was actually cheating, y’know. We could play the Ross-Rachel-we-were-on-a-break game all day long until our hearts give out. The real question is, did it feel like cheating?
And the truth, Hayden knows, staring at the man he loved who refused to look at him, is that it did. The whole time he was inside her, on top of her, surrounded by her, he couldn't stop thinking of Shane. Of his face if he could see what was happening right now. Horribly, it was that image in part that spurned him on. He wanted Shane to know what was happening, to feel the same heartbreak Hayden felt like he swallowed down every week, sharing a hotel and locker room together, but never a life or future.
Shane sighs, and then looks away again, at the window, gaze boring into the New York skyline like he wishes he could be anywhere but here. Hayden has never felt smaller in his life than he does at this moment.
“Hands and knees.” Shane says.
“What?”
“You heard me. Hands and knees, Pike, or I’m walking out of this hotel room right now.”
Hayden struggles to obey quickly, legs trembling as he gets into position, waiting to feel Shane’s touch on his body, those large, yet gentle hands on his hips. His cock in his ass. And that touch comes. Just not the way he expects.

final thoughts on shayden: i think the honest truth that all of us shaydens can admit to ourselves, especially now, maybe, is that shayden was far more for us than it was for shane or hayden irl. it was a space that us hockey fans, many of us fem or queer, carved out for ourselves within one of the most lgbt-hostile fanbases that exist.it was a space where we could imagine the at-the-time completely unbelievable reality that professional hockey could have two male queer superstar players in love. for many, it was their first introduction to queer fandom. a space where queer love thrived.

EDIT: a lot of ppl seem interested in the fake hollanov fics in this chapter! i do have some ideas for one of them idk if i'll get around to it anytime soon. but either way if anyone wants to write a fic inspired by or directed based on the summaries you have my blanket permission! just lmk when you publish so i have a chance to read it too :)
making this into a series bc there's some stuff referenced here I would love to elaborate on/write about in a non-socmed focused format (particularly the wasian/white x asian couple discourse which I have a LOT of thoughts on both at the meta level of rachel reid choosing to make 1/2 of her POC protags wasian and in an in-universe sense of shane's relationship to his race); if you're interested in that at all feel free to subscribe or bookmark!
also to clarify, I know there's been weird discourse on hr twitter in the past couple of weeks about hudson and connor and their relationships and lack thereof and ethical non-monogamy but i need u all to know i wrote those tweets like. literally december 24th. so maybe reality imitates fiction here and im the reason that discourse started #sorry

- ilya liked the hot russian singles tweet and mocked shane about it in front of friends, family, and dog for the next two weeks. he was going to ironically like the hot asian twinks tweet too but shane made a :/ face when he saw it and Ilya was like oh okay we can’t laugh at people’s stupid stereotyping. that’s okay. but then he felt bad for thinking it was funny so he reported it for animal abuse.
- writing the fake shayden excerpt was such an absolutely insane experience please do not @ me I know whatever I wrote is not 50k kudos-worthy writing...but I'll also admit it was super fucking funny to write so hopefully you enjoy that whole insanity...
- why are they still jane and lily after marriage? meta answer is that I accidentally kept it like that till dec 2021 and now don’t really want to change it. un-meta answer is that they never really bothered changing it until someone brought it up in summer 2022, at which point they were like, oh I guess if we get injured and someone has our phone we’d like them to find our contacts easily I guess and then changed them.
- despite the naruto segment being kinda long I'm not even a naruto fan like that srry it just made sense to me re: it's impact on shipping culture + its cultural relevance in the 2000s
- sorry to any tampa bay lightning fans first off for kicking them out of the EC finals bc the ottawa centaurs made it in this universe and then also for the "we don't have any words" stray — that tweet has lived in my head rent free since 2019 and I had to fit it in somehow. sorry also to colorado for taking away ur stanley cup i believe you fought hard against the centaurs. I'm sad I couldn't fit in tyler seguin's steers and queers tweet anywhere in this fic but one day...I will make it happen...
- I know harris was promoted at the end of role model I just needed him to still do social media for that texting scene sorry Harris I like to imagine you got a massive pay raise nonetheless
- everyone who likes the Shane Hollander Walks Ilya Rozanov like a Dog tag should go listen to Cat & Dog by TXT and reflect on how it's literally Ilya in that trope...I had to resist the urge to sneak in the lyrics somehow so bad...
- anyway who are everyone's favorite fake tweeters i have a weird attachment to @censational i believe that one day troy barrett and his bf will notice them...
