It was Scott Hunter’s night at the Las Vegas Biltmore, where the NHL held their annual award ceremony marking the end of another season. You’d have to live under a rock or have spent the last two weeks in a coma not to know why the captain of the New York Admirals, and 2014 Olympic gold medalist, was the talk of the town.
The New York Admirals, who have not won a Stanley Cup since Hunter was but one year old, were amply rewarded for their historic triumph last night. Eric Bennett took home the Vezina Trophy for top goaltender and the Crozier Saving Grace Award for boasting the highest save percentage of the season. Alternate Captain Carter Vaughn received the Selke Trophy, which honors the forward who best excels in the defensive aspect of the game; he was the first right wing to win the Selke since 2001. Head Coach Harv Murdock was also recognized, receiving an impressive ovation as he made history as the first man of color to win the Jack Adams Award for Coach of the Year.
Bennett, Vaughn, and Murdock each lavished praise upon their captain and friend Scott Hunter during their acceptance speeches, building anticipation for the moment of the night: Hunter himself taking the stage to accept the Hart Memorial Trophy for MVP. He stunned the audience into silence with a heartfelt speech in which he spoke at length about the pressures of being a closeted man in professional sports, the importance of representation for young fans and aspiring players, and the power of love. Hunter also concluded his speech with an open invitation to attend “Scott Hunter Night” at a popular gay club a few minutes’ walk down the strip. After putting in an appearance at the official NHL afterparty, Hunter and a handful of his New York teammates made their way to the club. Having the idea that the event could be an effective barometer of the league’s reaction to Hunter’s coming out, I also made my way to The Devil’s Sacrament—an aptly named club whose theming is a natural fit for Sin City.
While the NHL commissioner, player’s union, and each of the league’s affiliated teams have issued statements in support of Hunter—and the LGBTQ+ community at large—it was a different story last night in Vegas. Despite being one of the league’s biggest names and most respected captains celebrating the apex of his career, his open invitation was all but entirely snubbed by his fellow athletes. While Hunter and his teammates looked at ease laughing over drinks in the VIP section, I perched at the bar watching with a sinking sense of dread as the minutes ticked by and not one other player walked through the door.
Until one did.
Ilya Rozanov, captain of the Boston Bears and this year’s recipient of the Rocket Richard Award, turned up alone nearly two hours after Hunter’s group arrived. It was a shocking development for a number of reasons.
In case you need a reminder or you’re a newcomer to the world of major league hockey, Ilya Rozanov is a man of particular reputation. He is famed for his combatative and cocky approach to interviews. He has been hailed the “Ice King” by Rolling Stone, but is more commonly cited as “the Russian Menace” and is also quite popularly known as “the biggest asshole in the league” given his particular gift for disrupting other teams with chirps and insults thrown out with deadly precision. He picks fights, drops gloves, and racks up penalties like nobody’s business—and yet still ranks among each season’s top scoring players despite all of his time in the sin bin. Hunter himself once referred to Rozanov as “possibly the most annoying man who’s ever played hockey.” He’s even been involved in a career-long rivalry with Canadian golden boy Shane Hollander (yes, Rose Landry’s ex). By all accounts, Rozanov is the great villain and final boss of the NHL.
How strange to see the NHL’s resident bad boy so easily join the Admirals at their table, grinning and buying rounds. Not only did he join the New Yorkers when they took to the dance floor together, but he also appeared to be the only member of the NHL crew to dance with others. He flitted through the crowd, keeping his hands strictly to himself but dancing and chatting with any number of men who likely appreciated his handsome face far more than his shot accuracy or latest trophy. He looked even more comfortable in his surroundings than Hunter himself.
This was all a rather shocking development in light of Rozanov’s murky history when it comes to LGBTQ+ issues. Like nearly all of the other Russian citizens in the NHL, Rozanov has in the past not only declined to participate in pride night events, but dodged making any statement regarding his personal opinions on LGBTQ+ rights. For those who may not know, Russia has passed legislation that criminalizes “gay propaganda,” meaning there can be legal consequences to doing or saying anything perceived as supporting LGBTQ+ people. One assumes that Rozanov risks running afoul of this repressive law simply by showing his face at Scott Hunter’s gay club party. And yet he alone of all the league’s biggest stars felt that it was worth it to attend.
For both personal and political reasons, Ilya Rozanov should have been the last NHL player in the world to show up in a gay club to support the league’s first openly gay player. And yet, excepting Hunter’s own teammates, he was the only one that did. It’s more than enough to make one wonder if we’ve all been wrong in our understanding of Ilya Rozanov for all these years. It seems there must be more to the man than what meets the eye.
Scott Hunter’s Stanley Cup kiss was as loud as it was iconic—an undeniable statement, a moment of courage big enough to spark a seismic shift in the world of sports, instantly making headlines around the world and becoming perhaps the most-discussed hockey moment in social media history. It was the attention-grabbing sort of bravery, the climax of the movie where the music swells and the hero triumphs and the audience cheers. But not all history is made on the front page of the New York Times and not all acts of bravery are met with thunderous applause.
A common saying reminds us that history is made by people who show up. Last night, Ilya Rozanov showed up despite the risk of ostracization within his workplace and the threat of persecution in his home country. There won’t be headlines singing his praises for it, politicians and pop stars won’t be weighing in, most people will never hear a word about it. Rozanov himself hasn’t even mentioned his attendance on his own social media profiles. But in its own way, Rozanov’s presence at Scott Hunter Night is every bit as remarkable as Hunter’s coming out. Not just anyone can singlehandedly change the course of history like Scott Hunter did earlier this month, but the quiet and unassuming sort of bravery that Ilya Rozanov exemplified by showing up last night? The courage to do what is right, even if it means acting against your government? The conviction to stand up for your values when it counts, and to do so without demanding public attention or expecting praise for doing so? We are all capable of this, and these days more than ever it’s something that the world can never have too much of. We’re lucky to have men like Ilya Rozanov to remind us of that.

The way I said in my end note on The Very Normal Hollanov Anniversary Tweets that I’d probably take a break to catch up on my reading and instead I barely read anything and started formatting this the same day I finished that. I’m a lying liar. 😂🤥
I wanted to say thank you again to everyone for their interest in and support for that story. It’s more than doubled(?!) in hits, kudos, and bookmarks since I posted the final chapter like two weeks ago! And I’ve seen it recommended on instagram and discussed on threads, which is so amazing! Thanks to anyone who’s shared it or talked about it with friends! 💙💙💙
You may have recognized lots of familiar names and faces here from that story. Their presence is not meant to imply continuity, I am simply an outfit repeater! It’s way too much effort to come up with all those names and avatars to not reuse them, so here they are again. But there are also plenty of new users mixed in, which I had a bit too much fun coming up with in some cases. And of course Andre Ramstad exists in every universe, even if we can’t always see him. 😉
I wrote the first draft of this back in March, then set it aside to work on drafting other ideas and then eventually Very Normal… But returning to it felt right, and in doing so I had the idea of making the post referencing the “devil’s sacrament” meme that ultimately gave the story its form and served as the basis for way too many devilish jokes / gifs.
I knew this was finished when I looked at the word count and realized that I completely unintentionally landed on 7,666. Possibly the funniest joke in this entire thing. 😈
I’m gonna say this is just a one shot… but I do have some ideas for potential followup scenes so maybe someday I’ll return to this. Let’s consider it complete though.
