Wooing One Ilya Rozanov (On Shane’s Behalf)
Summary
Sure, Shane could be a bit neurotic at times, maybe a little socially awkward, but he was Shane goddamn Hollander, and Rozanov should’ve been grateful for even just the opportunity to get to know him. Be with him. Yet there that bastard was, squandering his chance away.
There was no fucking way JJ was going to allow that.
He didn’t care how much of a womaniser that dude was. However straight he seemed to the rest of the world. If there was even a chance it could work out between them JJ was going to make. It. Happen.
And also, hopefully get Shane laid in the process. God knows he could use it.
...
aka JJ still figures out Shane has a crush on Ilya, but this time instead of trying to set Shane up with other guys, he tries to wingman Shane to Ilya..?

This is based on a tumblr post I created, Here's the post hope you guys enjoy!!
Wooing One Ilya Rozanov (On Shane’s Behalf)
JJ knew.
He could see it in Shane’s face whenever they played against the Centaurs, or even if Rozanov just got brought up in conversation. His eyes lit up, and the side of his mouth quirked just the tiniest bit, a classic Shane Hollander ‘I’m happy and I’m trying to hide it’ face. The man was an open book, and after a decade of knowing him, JJ was fairly certain he could read him pretty well.
When he first figured it out, he questioned Shane’s taste in men; because Ilya Rozanov, really? That cocky asshole? Shane was rich, famous, talented, and honestly just a great dude, surely he had his pick of guys to choose from. But no, he went and selected the most conceited bastard to have been born.
It had taken JJ a while to accept that the crush was there to stay, and since then his focus shifted to the other glaring issue. Rozanov, for some fuckass reason, didn’t like Shane back. The few times he’d seen them interact, it was always Shane, sweet Shane, blushing and flustered, whilst Rozanov just sat there smirking.
JJ could not let that shit fly.
So thus started his plan of wooing one Ilya Rozanov on Shane’s behalf, and becoming the best goddamn wingman in motherfucking history. Certainly better than Hayden, who clearly hadn’t even figured out what was going on. His obliviousness was second only to Shane’s.
These were the steps:
- Befriend Rozanov
This one killed him to think about, because it was, well, Rozanov, but he needed to if he was going to sell him on Shane. And he knew just when to do it, too, because Shane always went to meet him when they played against Ottawa. JJ’d just tag along and enact his plan their next game.
- Hype the shit out of Shane
This one was self-explanatory. If he wanted to wingman he needed to wingman. He’d pretend he was just complimenting Shane since he’d also be there, but his plan was to get Rozanov to agree and join in. Surely, he’d realise what was right in front of him if they spent an entire evening talking about how great Shane was. Plus, it worked as a conversation starter, since pretty much the only thing he had in common with the guy was their friendship with Shane.
- Figure out if Rozanov’s queer or not
This one was to get a better idea of what he was working with. Whether the dude knew his own sexuality, or had never even thought to question it like some of the other guys in the league. (Like Hayden). JJ himself was pretty confident he was straight; he’d kissed some guys back in college, just to try it out, and hadn’t really been into it. But damn the rest of the league needed to give it a little more thought than they had. Rozanov probably fell into the same category; found out he liked women and just never gave it a thought after that. By god, JJ would make that man use whatever existed of his brain and really give it some thought.
If he still turned out to be straight afterwards, JJ’d give up, maybe try setting Shane up with some other guys to get him to move on. But until then he was dead set on his plan to help Shane bag his somewhat questionable crush.
- Get him to admit Shane’s a babe
At this point they’d have established both that Shane was the absolute best, and that Rozanov was not straight. So, the dots would need to be connected. A naïve and optimistic man would have left it out of the plan and trusted Rozanov to figure it out on his own, but he feared he’d need to spell it out for him. Maybe he was just being cynical since he’d spent so much time around thick-skulled dumbasses, but he was not about to put the fate of the entire plan on some asshole jock’s overworked brain.
- Boom! Best wingman title acquired
This was the last part, where everything would work out. Shane would get the guy he liked, Rozanov would learn to worship the ground Shane walked on, and JJ could stop having to think about the guy. And also stop suffering through Shane’s pining.
It was the perfect plan. Literally foolproof.
…
So the plan was off to a bit of a rocky start.
Shane had not liked the idea of JJ coming with him to Rozanov’s house after the game, and they’d spent all of warm ups arguing about it. He hadn’t managed to get Shane on board before the game started, and then spent all of first period getting ignored.
Like, he understood. Who’d want to take a friend along when hanging out with their crush, but the pure panic on Shane’s face was a bit of an overreaction. Even by Shane standards.
From the other side of the ice, he saw him battle Rozanov for the puck, chirping him. JJ couldn’t hear what he said but it clearly threw the guy off, because he stilled and whipped around to look at JJ, whilst Shane ran away with the puck.
That’s my man.
A little while later, Rozanov made his way over to where JJ was sitting on the bench, and asked, “Hollander says you want come to my house too, does Montreal’s management not pay enough for good hotels or something?”
“Fuck off Rozanov, just wanted to know what he sees in you.”
He narrowed his eyes, staring at JJ in suspicion.
“What?”
“Surely if Shane thinks you’re a good friend, you can’t be too bad.”
He visibly processed that, then grinned.
“You need more friends, Boiziau?”
JJ shook his head. The only thing Rozanov knew how to do was chirp people. He asked, again, to any potential higher power out there, what the hell Shane saw in this guy?
“Just invite me over man, a truce, for Shane’s sake.”
With that he got up to get water. The sound of Rozanov muttering ‘truce…’ under his breath could just barely be heard.
…
After the game was over – 4-2 in Montreal’s favour – and everyone had finished getting dressed, Shane walked up to him.
“Ilya said he’s okay with you coming?” He said doubtfully.
Ilya? Goddamn Shane, you’re whipped.
“Great! lead the way, mon capitaine.”
…
Just as he was about to ring the bell, Shane turned around to look at him again.
“One last time, are you sure you want to do this?”
“He’s your friend, capitaine, which means he needs to get vetted.” JJ grinned at his own lie.
“We’ve been friends for years though, why now?” Shane narrowed his eyes.
“Sorry my guy, I needed that time to process that you were both friends, now that I’ve had time to accept it, we need to make sure he’s good enough for you.”
Shane shook his head and rang the bell, grumbling something about ‘overprotective friends’ and ‘being treated like a damsel in distress’.
Rozanov opened the door.
“Welcome, Shane Hollander and Shane Hollander’s friend, come in.” He was grinning maniacally.
The both of them shuffled in, a tad awkward.
“I am almost done making dinner, bird food for Shane, and human food for me. And I guess for you, Jean-Jacques Boiziau.”
His pronunciation of JJ’s full name was borderline criminal.
“Did you search up his full name whilst we were on our way?” Shane asked, amused.
Shane, do you find this funny? What the hell?
What happened to bros before hoes? Or, well, best friends before boyfriends?
Mates before dates?
Brothers before lovers?
“Why would I know name of 14th Best Montreal player?”
Chums before scums.
“If Hayde finds out JJ ranks higher, he’ll scream.” Shane muttered.
The things JJ suffered for his captain.
Rozanov escorted them to the dining table and went to finish up the cooking. JJ took a seat on the bench across from Shane, who fiddled with his thumbs in silence. The food came out just as the quiet started bordering on awkward.
Right. Time to move on to the next step.
“By the way nice hat-trick tonight, mon capitaine. Leave some puck for the rest of us.” Shane made this part so easy, goddamn generational talent.
“Ahh yes. Hazy will have nightmares after tonight I think.” Said Rozanov.
Damn right.
Shane blushed red and stammered out a protest.
“He’s a great goalie.”
“If you tell say that to his face I think he’ll cream his pants.”
Happy the plan was starting to work, JJ took a bite of the food, and then, “Damn this is good.”
Rozanov grinned.
“See Hollander, people enjoy food made for humans. Unlike your bird food.”
Instinctively, JJ rushed to defend his captain.
Idiot.
“Yeah, but Shane’s diet is like, really good, for health reasons, and also for uhh, being an athlete, because of all the protein, that’s required, and uhh…the macrobiotics, and…”
Shane looked at him with deep suspicion and mistrust.
“You give me so much shit about my diet, JJ.”
Right. That’s because the diet’s stupid.
But the plan…
“That’s just teasing, your diet’s like, super respectable…and you’re totally not a health nut–”
“Health nut, hmm, I like that. Shane Hollander, big health nut.” Rozanov grinned.
JJ whipped around to glare at him. What about the plan!
Never mind the fact that Rozanov didn’t know about said plan.
“Like you can judge, with all your smoking and shit.”
“Thank you, JJ!” Shane looked vindictive.
Rozanov narrowed his eyes.
“You come into my house, eat my good, safe for humans food, and you take Shane’s side?”
“Of course he’ll take my side! I’m right.”
And then they started bickering.
Seriously. There was no better word for it. It was like watching two toddlers have simultaneous temper tantrums. JJ had babysat Hayden’s kids too many times not to recognise it.
My plan, he thought, mournfully.
At first, he tried to stay on Shane’s side, get back to the scheduled program, but it just made Rozanov argue more. Against Shane. He was being a terrible wingman.
He made the executive decision to move on to the next step.
…
When Shane got up to put the plates away (seriously what kind of host makes his guest do the dishes?) JJ made his move.
He slid along the bench until he was right in front of Rozanov, who was scrolling on his phone.
JJ decided to start of slow, so as to not startle the guy.
“So, are you seeing anyone?”
Rozanov stilled, blinked once, twice, before looking up.
“Why do you ask, Boiziau?”
“Ehh, just curious, it’s been a while since ‘Russia’s greatest love machine’,” he did air-quotes here, “’s been papped with a girl.”
“I’m doing just fine, if you’re concerned.” He smirked.
Fuck was he actually seeing someone?
Shane would be so much better than whichever puck bunny Rozanov had pulled.
Wait, that was offensive.
The girl was probably great (apart from her taste in men), but no one could compete against Shane!
If he could just drive home the point of step 2, without Shane there to fire up Rozanov’s competitiveness, step 3 would go much easier.
JJ switched gears for a bit.
“Uhuh, so, what do you think about Shane?”
Rozanov raised his brow at the change in topic.
“What do you mean?”
“He’s great right? He’s the best at hockey–”
“Not as good as me.”
“He’s really smart–”
“You mean he’s a nerd.”
“And he has a great physique too.”
A moment of silence.
“What is the point of this?” Rozanov was frowning now.
Why was he not agreeing yet?
“Are you confused about the last point, because I know that all athletes have good physique’s but like you have to admit that Shane’s is like, objectively insane, I mean there’s a reason he was voted the hottest NHL player by cosmopolitan–”
“Why are you bringing this up, Boiziau?” His accent had gotten thicker, gruffer. Mean spirited.
“Well, I mean, don’t you agree?”
Before Rozanov could answer, Shane came back.
Sensing the tension in the room, he asked, “What’s going on, you guys?”
“Oh, we were just talking about how great you are!” Said JJ, ever chipper.
Shane flushed, glancing at Rozanov.
He was still frowning.
“Okay, well, does anyone want anything to drink? JJ, a beer?”
“Yes please, mon capitaine.”
He still didn’t understand why Shane was hosting when it was Rozanov’s house, but if it got Shane out of the room, JJ’d take it.
“Does this have to do with Shane being gay?” Rozanov hissed, voice still rough.
Well.
Internally JJ was grinning but externally he just said, “Maybe.”
“He is too good of you, Boiziau.” Voice low, seething with possessiveness.
The fact that the man had the audacity to be jealous but hadn’t yet realised he liked Shane. It was typical jock behaviour, but at least it worked well for the plan.
“Oh, don’t worry, I don’t like Shane like that. You on the other hand…”
“What do you–” He cut himself off, his eyes widened in panic.
“Do you know?” He sounded terrified.
Shit. Of course he would be scared. He didn’t know he could trust JJ about being queer.
“Hey, it’s okay if you’re gay or whatever.”
“Although, you probably should break up with the person you’re seeing.”
Rozanov, who had just started to relax, sucked in a breath.
“What?”
“Well, I mean, it’s kind of unfair right?” poor girl.
“The fuck? Why?” He sounded offended.
“Don’t you, want to break up, too? And you have a better option right here!”
Well, right in the kitchen, but, you know, semantics.
Rozanov looked both angry and confused.
“Wha-? Are you saying I should date, you? Boiziau? I know I’m great but what the fuck?”
Wait, huh?
“What? No! I’m saying you should break up with the girl you’re seeing, because you clearly like Shane, and frankly, he clearly likes you!”
The sound of glass breaking interrupted their conversation.
They whipped around.
Shane stood, wide-eyed, frozen at the entrance of the kitchen.
He had dropped the beer bottle on the floor.
For a moment no one made a sound.
Then Rozanov started laughing, hearty laughs, frenzied, the kind that hurt your stomach and made your lungs burn. The kind that didn’t stop easily.
“What the hell happened while I was gone?” Shane sounded concerned, and a bit hysterical.
JJ was confused by Rozanov’s reaction, but clearly, he was not in a position to explain, so JJ he took it upon himself.
“Well, I was trying to convince Rozanov that he should ask you out, because, well, sorry capitaine but the pining was really obvious, so I figured out you had a crush on him, which, I was really questioning your choice in men for a while there, but anyway now he’s laughing, for some reason?”
Shane turned to look at Rozanov, who was still cackling.
He blinked. Rozanov slowly quieted down.
“Very obvious pining?” He huffed out.
Shane turned red and looked back at JJ.
“Wait so, you thought I liked him, and you decided to…set us up?”
“Well, yeah, I was wing-manning. I had a plan and everything.” JJ was really confused now.
“What was the plan?” Rozanov piped up.
JJ, still puzzled, explained the steps of the now completely derailed plan.
By the time he finished, Shane was drowning in embarrassment.
Rozanov seemed to be having the time of his life.
“I told you letting him come would be funny.”
Shane glared at him.
“What the fuck is going on right now?” JJ asked.
Shane sighed, deeply.
“We’re already dating, JJ.”
Oh.
Oh.
Rozanov saw the look on his face and lost it for the second time. He downright giggled.
Even Shane huffed out a laugh.
“You mean I put in all that effort for nothing?”
Shane shrugged, holding back a grin. He then almost slipped on the spilled beer, which prompted Rozanov into getting up and cleaning up the mess.
”Well, at least I found out before Hayden.”
They both paused.
Shane scratched at his neck.
He didn't meet his eyes.
“What! No! Capitaine how could you do this to me?” JJ despaired.
They dissolved into snickers, for the third fucking time, at his expense.
These motherfuckers. They deserved to be with each other.
And how dare they have already gotten together.
What about his beautiful plan?
JJ sighed, exhausted by the evening. He couldn't wait to go to sleep.

EDIT: 21/06/26
I just realised that I accidentally deleted the second last line JJ says in the fic (about Hayden) which is sooo annoying but anyways, it’s fixed now, sorry to anyone who read that before the edit because the last part does not make sense otherwise
