Chapter 1

EXCLUSIVE: Rookie Rivals… Or After-Hours Roommates?

We’re not saying anything happened. We’re just saying... maybe some rivalries get more heated than others.

Following a closed CCM promotional shoot earlier this week, one of our reporters was hoping to get a quick comment from the day’s two athletes: Boston’s top prospect Ilya Rozanov and Montreal’s first-round pick Shane Hollander. After waiting in front of the locker room for a while, our reporter stepped inside to make sure they hadn’t already left through another exit. Instead, it quickly became apparent that both NHL rookies were still in the showers – and in no particular hurry to leave.

Waiting respectfully by the doors until the two players finally emerged, our reporter did not expect to overhear a conversation that became increasingly difficult to explain away, ending in the question: “What’s your room number?” A question that was promptly answered.

You don’t believe us? Here are the receipts. Kind of.

[Picture with overlaid audio track]

The pictures and audio are admittedly terrible. Neither player is clearly identifiable and on their own they prove absolutely nothing, but as only two athletes were invited to this shoot, readers can draw their own conclusions about who exactly is in the frame.

Could there be a completely innocent explanation for this? Of course. Or maybe Boston and Montreal fans will have to get used to the idea that their prized draft picks are going to be a little friendlier off the ice than anyone expected.

Neither player nor their representatives responded to requests for comment before publication.

@hockeyfan97

“what’s your room number?”

brooo

#RookieRoommates

@penaltyboxing

‘our reporter waited respectfully by the doors’

you mean your creep of an employee hid himself out of sight to then listen in on and take secret pictures of two people in a locker room

get fucked

@goaliesarehotter

I hope they get sued for publishing this

@chirpsonice

I don’t care if you expose the next Watergate, you should still get sued to fucking ruin for invading people’s privacy like this

@bears4life

the season hasn’t even started yet and Rozanov is already colluding with a Voyageur?? #RespectTheRivalry #tohellwithmtl

@rinkrat03

The league is getting softer every year. Too much friendship, not enough edge.

@GoalieUnion

This buddy-buddy nonsense is ruining the sport. #RespectTheRivalry

@CubsForever

Imagine being mad about one of your team’s players having friends.

@HollywoodHoops

not just friends. friends on a different team. gasp.

@TrickyHatTrick

Watch everyone who is now saying it’s no big deal absolutely lose their minds once playoffs come around.

@puckspucking

‘readers can draw their own conclusion’

that’s tabloid speak for ‘we’ve got absolutely no proof, so feel free to make up whatever will get you most enraged, also please keep clicking’

@bonvoyageur05

“We’re not saying anything happened…” followed by 500 words implying something definitely happened. I hate gossip sites.

@hillstodieon

BREAKING: hockey players sometimes have conversations

More at 11.

@pucksinthenet

EXCLUSIVE: professional athletes sometimes take showers

back to you, fred

@DubNation

SOURCES CONFIRM: professional athletes sometimes use locker rooms

@BlueLineJack

DEVELOPING: Advanced analytics show a 100% chance that two people hired for the same photoshoot might interact.

Investigation ongoing.

@SinBinToTheMax

The receipts are two blurry photos and audio that sounds like it was recorded underwater. Be serious.

@chirpchirpMF

The article even admits the pictures prove nothing and the audio is so shit you can barely understand what’s being said

@ThunderInTampa

The room number question and the reply are pretty clear, I think.

@chirpchirpMF

Because they told you what is supposedly said

@PucksAndVibes

True. It’s like those songs where the lyrics can sound like a hundred different things if there are subtitles.

@bostonfanatic98

Soooo… In case this is true, have we agreed yet whether we should consider this tampering or foreplay? #RookieRoommates

@GoLightning

Why not both? Both is good.

@torontofire

send the two fags back to their countries we don’t need this shit in our league

@IceNinja

… you are aware that Shane Hollander is born and raised Canadian, right?

@BleedingBlackGold

There’s no way Rozanov is gay. He gets pussy nearly on the daily.

@offtothesinbin

LOL true

He only got to Boston a few weeks ago and he’s already fucked his way through half the clubs downtown. Already a legend.

@torontofire

dont even bother its just the rainbow mafia trying to turn everything into woke bullshit #keepwokeoutofhockey

@motherpuck3r

What is everyone even fucking talking about? The pictures show some dude in a towel with (possibly) blonde hair, halfway covered by the open door of one of the lockers behind him, standing in a way that almost entirely blocks the sight of another guy sitting down on the bench of whom you can barely see the legs and sneakers and maybe a bit of (black?) hair. There is not a single identifying feature visible and the audio is even worse. How the fuck is everyone losing their minds over this bullshit.

@admiralsgirlie

well, the one guy does sound distinctly Russian in the audio

@motherpuck3r

Oh fuck off, he does not. You can barely hear what they’re saying much less whether either of them has an accent.

@motherpuck3r

also, you do know that Rozanov isn’t the only Russian in the world, right?

@HarborLights

The fact that people are acting like two rookies talking at a shared photo shoot is some sort of scandal is insane

@NoahAgain

if my biggest rival looked like Shane Hollander, I’d ask for his room number as well idc #RookieRoommates

@TresVoyageur

Montreal fans waited years for a franchise player and this is what we get?

#RespectTheRivalry #tohellwithboston

@voyageurs4eva

Cool your fucking horses

Everyone keeps trying to drag Hollander into this when the only thing you can see of the second guy is that he’s wearing Reeboks and has dark hair. Like about ten million other people aside from Hollander. #tohellwithboston

@TresVoyageur

Huh, so just the Russian is a faggot.

@voyageurHQ

lol serves Boston right

@VoyageursNation

just imagine if Boston had been smart enough to pick Hollander first, we’d have likely ended up with the Russian fag instead #tohellwithboston

@LolaLovesPuck

Reminder that neither player has commented as of yet.

@voyageurs4eva

Rozanov is a known manwhore so I kinda get how everyones so certain its him but how did we decide the other is Hollander? Based on a blurry pair of Reeboks?

@MattOnIce

Some asshole who thinks it’s okay to spy on (and take pictures of!) people in a locker room claiming some career-ending scandal but providing ZERO evidence… and everyone is just ready to hang two generational talents for it.

What the fuck, people.

@BearsToTheEnd

I don’t even care whether it’s true or not, that reporter should be put in jail for this shit. Have some fucking decency.

@audioaudio

Ran the audio through a filter.

One speaker definitely has a Russian accent.

That’s all I’m willing to say.

@GoalHorn

What are you fucking talking about? Both of them say barely 10 words to each other. How is any of this enough to identify a specific person?

@bears4life

You people have spent two days proving that one man is (maybe) Russian. Congratulations?

@HatTrickAlert

Okay, the first one is almost definitely Rozanov. Not convinced the second person is Hollander, though.

@AudioNerding

The cadence sounds like Hollander’s interviews, this. The accent sounds like Rozanov in game tapes, that.

Stop pretending like voice ID is magic, much less from a piece of shit audio like this.

@admiralsjunkie

The accent alone makes me think one of them is Rozanov. The other could honestly be anyone.

@HatTrickAlert

Don’t forget the moles you can clearly see on Rozanov’s back!

@TheRinkReport

BREAKING: Ilya Rozanov dropped by his Russia-based agent

In the midst of the current controversy, insider sources reveal that Ilya Rozanov’s agent, Pavel Orlov, decided to part ways with Rozanov, who was likely his most prolific client until the recent controversies. Pavel Orlov’s firm has worked with Rozanov ever since his junior days in the Russian leagues and remains Russian-based.

@sticksandtape

ahahahaha #keepwokeoutofhockey

@PuckInsider

BREAKING: Another Sponsor Bails on Rozanov Amid Scandal

The fallout from the biggest NHL story since the end of last season isn’t slowing down. Sources tell us that two of Rozanov’s sponsors, both based in Russia, quietly removed him from their website just days after rumors linked him to fellow NHL rookie Shane Hollander. Neither company has commented publicly, but fans immediately noticed Rozanov’s disappearance from promotional materials. This makes it now four brands that have either removed Rozanov from their campaigns or paused them indefinitely, a pattern difficult to ignore.

@PuckDad53

Five days in and Hollander still has all of his sponsors (no one is even really talking about him anymore).

Rozanov keeps losing them all.

Welcome to geopolitics.

@MeOnMain

lols serves the fag right

@bears4life

Well, shit. I hope Rozanov is doing okay.

@admiralsgirlie

I mean, it’s just his Russian sponsorships...

@BackUpGoalie

Yeah, and let’s all hope it stays that way

@NomadsUpNorth

Current evidence: two blurry photos, muffled audio, claims from piece-of-shit reporter

Internet certainty: 100%

@GoldenGatePuck

Well, more like

Rozanov: 95%

Hollander: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@BackUpGoalie

Watch it turn out that the second guy is just a CCM employee and we’ve all lost our minds for nothing

@SeattleSentinels88

Watch it turn out that both the picture and audio aren’t even from this shoot and just some random photo that peeping tom reporter took in a completely different locker room

@PucksBunny

could everyone fucking stop talking about this

Rozanov is Russian.

who tf cares whether it’s true. do you people even know what could happen to him if his country gets wind of this?

@OffTheIce

Alexei Rozanov speaks out: “My brother has always been the black sheep”

It looks like Ilya Rozanov may be losing more than sponsors in the current controversy. In a statement released to Russian media today, Ilya Rozanov’s older brother Alexei said that their family “holds traditional values” and that recent reports surrounding Boston’s first draft pick “while unsurprising do not reflect our beliefs”.

Fans are calling it exactly what it sounds like: a public disowning. If Ilya Rozanov held on to hope that his family would have his back, it is now clear that they will not.

@PuckGuy92

this just keeps getting sadder

@bears4life

I really fucking hope his brother at least had the decency to tell Ilya about this first. Imagine finding out about your family disowning you through the news.

@motherpuck3r

Russia really is a different world

@penaltyboxing

I mean this sucks, sure, but if his brother and family are still living in Russia, let’s maybe be a little careful in judging them. We have no idea what kind of pressure they’re under.

@IceNinja

doesn’t make it any less sad

@PuckGuy92

no it doesn’t

@PucksBunny

Between the sponsorship losses, rumors about the Bears possibly trading him to reduce the impact of the scandal, and his family disowning him…

I can’t even imagine what Rozanov is going through right now.

@BearInBoston

Sorry but if Rozanov is spending his time before the start of the season exchanging hotel room numbers with a Montreal player instead of training, I have questions. #RespectTheRivalry #tohellwithMTL

@bearlyliving

the boston montreal rivalry means something #RespectTheRivalry #tohellwithMTL

@PuckDad53

The Boston-Montreal rivalry survived decades of playoff wars. It will survive two rookies having a conversation/being friends/fucking like rabbits. Who even gives a fuck.

@offtothesinbin

Just send Rozanov back to Russia. We don’t want or need some Russian faggot in the NHL.

#keepwokeoutofhockey

@sticksandtape

send the russian pansy back home #keepwokeoutofhockey

@HockeyNerd85

Even if all of this is true, where is the evidence that Hollander and Rozanov did anything other than maybe watch a movie or play some video games later on?

@BobFromBoston

lmfao

with a manwhore like Rozanov?

be so for fucking real

@MeOnMain

you can call it friendship or whatever you want

I dont even care whether Rozanov fucked Hollander or some other guy

just throw the fags out of our league

@PuckGuy71

The funniest part about all this is that half of you are mad because you believe it’s true and the other half are mad because you think it’s fake. How about just waiting for what Rozanov and Hollander have to say before jumping to conclusions, hm?

@OffTheIce

Bears Looking to Move Rozanov? – According to an insider source, the Boston Bears may be considering trading Ilya Rozanov, their first round draft pick, and even discussing whether there might be a way to void his contract entirely. Nothing appears to be imminent, and the Bears have refused to comment as of yet. But with the controversy surrounding Rozanov still escalating, his future in Boston suddenly looks a lot less certain.

@bears4life

wtf?

@BearsToTheEnd

Noooooooo. Why would we trade him?!!? We finally have the center we’ve needed for years. Who the fuck cares whether he takes it up the ass or not! I just want some Cups!!!

@nomads4thecup

lols the Bears ruining their playoff chances just because they can’t deal with the idea of a gay dude in their locker room

@GoldeGatePuck

on that note: pspspsps Rozanov, come to San Fran, we’d love to have you and we could not care less who you fuck

@BeyondTheBoards

Opinion: Not Taking a Stand but Avoiding Risk

Corporations don’t like uncertainty. That’s the lesson to be learned from the rapid abandonment of Ilya Rozanov by multiple national and international sponsors.

However, while the termination of his Russian sponsorships and lack of new sponsorship deals is going to affect his income, the biggest effect is likely going to be felt in his market value as a player. The Boston Bears chose Rozanov as their number one draft pick, making their confidence in him as a player and his worth to their franchise clear. Now? The Boston Bears have been very quiet aside from a brief post about supporting inclusivity. Whether this level of controversy over a rookie is worth it to the Bears remains to be seen. In the end, even professional hockey teams are simply corporations. And corporations do not like risks, after all.

@MikeTheLawyer

“Rozanov is getting deported.” No, he’s not.

“He’ll be made an American next week.” Also no.

“Russia will cancel his visa.” Definitely no.

Immigration law is complex and nuanced and boring. Which means that it’s much more complicated than whatever your favorite influencer just tweeted.

@TheRinkReport

What happens if Rozanov decides to never go home?

Hockey fans understandably focus on goals, assists, and Cups. Immigration lawyers are watching something else entirely.

Recent efforts have changed anti-lgbt sentiment for the worse in Russia and few citizens are willing to declare themselves defiant of it. While legal framework criminalizing members of the LGBT community has yet to make it past Russian lawmakers, the sentiment is there.

Thus, the question becomes whether someone like Ilya Rozanov, a fairly public figure here and in his own country, can risk going home at all after this week’s controversy. As with most professional athletes playing in the US, Rozanov’s visa is tied to his immigration classification and work permit. Should he choose to remain in the US for now, his NHL contract becomes more than a source of income. It becomes the legal foundation of his life in the US, a country free of legal persecution for members of the LGBT community.

“He’s not stranded, even should worse come to worst and Russia decides to invalidate his passport,” one expert says. “But if your career is your visa, every contract negotiation carries a little more weight. In a situation like this where everyone is aware that returning home might not be an option at all, it suddenly gives leverage where previously there was none and certainly increases the pressure on the athlete to agree to things they might have negotiated against otherwise.”

@nightattherink

This is just plain horrifying. Are you telling me that Rozanov can’t (or at least really really shouldn’t) go home and in order to make sure of that he has to have employment in the US. The Bears better not fucking gut him just because they know he doesn’t really have a choice.

@BackInFive

I want to remind everyone that ROZANOV HASN’T EVEN COMMENTED ON THE LEAK YET

its been barely a week and Rozanov hasnt commented yet, so how are we talking about kicking him out of the league and getting him deported before hes even had the chance to comment?!!!

@hockeyfan97

It’s kind of funny how this went from ‘how dare Rozanov and Hollander besmirch the sacred Montreal-Boston rivalry’ to ‘Rozanov definitely fucked SOME guy’ lols

@BayAreaPuck

stfu this isn’t funny at all not with Rozanov being Russian

@FrozenIceRink

idgaf

lock the fags up for all I care

serves them right

#keepwokeoutofhockey

@RinkWatch

Insider sources claim that contract negotiations between Ilya Rozanov and the Boston Bears have stalled.

When it rains, it pours: after being dropped by his Russia-based agent and having to scramble for new representation, Rozanov now appears to be caught in something of a deadlocked negotiation with his draft team. While both sides refused to give any details, it seems unlikely that Rozanov would be the one stalling if only due to the implications for his visa. One cannot help but wonder whether the Boston Bears are deliberately drawing out negotiations in the hopes of forcing a more favorable deal or possibly even follow through on the trade rumors to avoid the controversy surrounding Rozanov altogether.

@bearlyskating

This is so fucked. What is my team even doing

@OneMoreMinute

Calm down, it’s not like they can force Rozanov back to Russia

@detroitdetroit52

Weeeelll… Not a lawyer but the way I understand it, as the team who drafted him Boston holds exclusive rights for negotiating his contract for almost two (?) seasons, whether they actually sign him or not. No idea whether it’s ever happened before that a team doesn’t sign a drafted player (much less a first pick), but no way does Rozanov’s work visa cover that long of a period without actual employment in the US whether he’s in contract negotiations or not.

@admiralsjunkie

Wait. I thought Rozanov already has a contract with the Bears? How would he have even gotten to the US without one?

@PucksBunny

are you fucking telling me that Rozanov might be forced back to his home country (where he might be persecuted for unsubstantiated rumors started by some piece-of-shit reporter) unless he agrees to whatever terms the Bears put in front of him?!!? is that what im hearing????

@LolaLovesPuck

Unfortunately yes.

@detroitdetroit52

I mean, clearly Boston is waiting to see how this whole thing develops before they make any decisions, but I really wouldn’t want to be Rozanov right now.

@puckgremlin

yeah, no shit

@bearlyskating

well @BostonBearsOfficial please prove everyone wrong and don’t be shitty enough to shake down a nineteen-year-old kid under threat of sending him to a place where he will be metaphorically (I hope!) crucified

@ShaneHollanderOfficial

Over the last week, there has been a lot of speculation about my private life. I have stayed quiet because I believed it wasn’t anyone’s business and I hoped the speculation would die down. It hasn’t. Instead, my silence has allowed someone else to become the focus of a story that should not have involved him at all.

So, now I find myself saying: I am one of the people in the leaked photos and audio that were recorded and released without my consent. I won’t identify the other person because they are a private individual who never asked to be dragged into this, but I want to clarify that the rumors around Ilya Rozanov just due to attending the same shoot are unjustified. I regret that my silence has led to unfair speculation around Ilya Rozanov and ask that everyone stop spreading rumors about him.

I hope that, moving forward, the focus can return to hockey. Thank you for respecting the privacy of everyone involved.

@BackupGoalie

whaaaaaaat????????????????????

@voyageurera

Oh. My. Fucking. God.

@GoldenGatePuck

Is this… Did Shane Hollander just come out? On fucking Twitter?!

@21scottshunter21

Kind of? Maybe? But also not really?

@voyageurista47

Hmmmm. He’s being pretty vague about it. Then again, he’s also not denying any of those ‘rumors’ other than Rozanov’s involvement.

@SinBinToTheMax

duuude, no way is anyone believing that room number exchange was for anything other than a hook-up

@sticksandtape

when Rozanov was still supposedly involved, I thought the leak was bullshit because he’s a certified pussy magnet

but now that it’s just Hollander? Is anyone really surprised the little asian takes it up the ass?

@torontofire

fucking fag

@GoldenGatePuck

Both of you, get the fuck out of my replies.

@OffTheIce

In a stunning turn of events, Shane Hollander, star rookie for the Montreal Voyageurs, confirmed that he is in fact one of the people in last week’s leaked locker room photos and audio. This announcement comes as a particular surprise as most of social media and the league itself seemed to have already cleared him of suspicion, instead focusing on Ilya Rozanov who, according to Hollander, was in fact not involved in the leaked material. Hollander refused to identify the other individual and also would not comment on what exactly happened after the now infamous hotel number exchange. Which only leaves social media free to do what it does best: decide their facts all on their own. Again.

@goaliesarehotter

scumbag with press credentials: makes up lies after creeping on an athlete in locker room

social media: promptly loses its mind without any evidence and almost gets someone entirely uninvolved deported

good job, faceless mob

@penaltyboxing

Let’s be honest, we all knew that whatever that press-badge peeping tom was saying must be at least a partial lie. We just agreed on the wrong part being the truth.

@BearsToTheEnd

yeah, and almost got Rozanov sent to get prosecuted in Russia for something he didn’t even do

@chirpchirpMF

Don’t forget also effectively forcing Hollander into coming out ON TOP OF being spied on in the locker room!!

@PuckDad53

I mean, the real takeaway from this is that Hollander is a decent guy with balls of steel, willing to out himself just to prevent someone else taking the fall for him, even if they are his rival on the ice

@BearInBoston

Come on, that’s just basic fucking decency.

@shaneslawyer24

Sure. But look me in the eye and tell me which other professional athletes you think would have enough integrity they’d willingly invite a scandal like this onto themselves (after already being cleared of suspicion, mind you) just to protect someone else uninvolved. I’ll wait.

@shaneslawyer24

It’s been seven hours. I’m still waiting.

@proudhockeyguy

A win for the LGBTQ+ community!

@1stOnTheRozter

How could Hollander wait this long to bail Roz out?! He was nearly DEPORTED!!!!

@motherpuck3r

oh shut up. Rozanov wasn’t anywhere close to being deported.

also it’s been barely a week since that shitty article. maybe Hollander needed a day or two to make up his mind about torpedoing his own career and maybe he also didn’t expect things to spiral out of control on Rozanov’s end quite this quickly. Give the guy a break.

@ESPN

NHL rookie Shane Hollander came out as queer in an interview on Thursday, two days after posting a statement identifying himself as one of the people featured in a leaked locker room recording while also rejecting the widespread speculation around Boston’s star rookie Ilya Rozanov being involved.

“I didn’t intend to ever come out while I was still an active player,” Hollander said. “But the amount of negative attention directed at Rozanov has been unfair.”

His announcement has also renewed scrutiny of the quick responses from fans and sponsors who condemned Rozanov after the initial leak, most notable of which being rumors about the Boston Bears potentially severing ties with Rozanov, despite possible legal ramifications for his work visa.

Within minutes of Hollander’s announcement, LGBTQ+ organizations, former NHL players, fans, and several of his sponsors posted messages of support. The league’s response was more muted, with Hollander’s own team, the Montreal Voyageurs, yet to comment.

“Hockey is the last sport to have an active queer player. There is a reason for that.” A former star forward for Seattle said. “Kudos to Hollander.”

That support from outside the league comes as insider sources claim Hollander could be facing an inquiry from the Commissioner’s Office, as well as increasing rumors about the Voyageurs potentially looking to trade him to another team.

“I knew what this might mean for my career,” Hollander said. “I just want to play hockey. It’s all I’ve ever wanted to do. It is regrettable that my private life will be having this level of impact on whether I will be permitted to do so.”

@TheRinkReport

Opinion: Shane Hollander Didn’t Owe Anyone a Coming-Out

Most of social media is celebrating Shane Hollander for becoming the first out active player in the NHL, yet attention has shifted away from the way he found himself claiming that title.

While this moment will be going into the history books, the most heartbreaking part remains Hollander’s mostly ignored sentiment of “My silence has allowed someone else to become the focus.”

Read between the lines and it becomes clear that, as so many queer people who have found themselves forcibly outed, his coming out was less about freely living his life or defining himself to the world or even taking a historic step for the sake of representation and more about protecting another from a scandal not their own.

@NHLofficial

The National Hockey League remains committed to fostering an environment of inclusivity and respect.

@pucksinthenet

… and? AND???? Where is the rest of the statement? How about saying you support Shane or condemning the way half of hockey twitter has devolved into a cesspool of homophobia and racism (in combination, what fun!).

@MattOnIce

lols you do know you’re screaming at the official account of the whitest, straightest sport ever invented, right? No way is anyone there going to stick up for any minorities They’d love it if they could just kick anyone off the ice who isn’t joe blow from midwest-never-fucking-heard-of-your-podunk-town

@NoahAgain

Respect to Hollander for coming out

Still don’t believe the other guy isn’t Rozanov

@TheNorthFace

We are proud to continue our partnership with Shane Hollander.

He has represented our brand with professionalism, integrity, and quiet leadership throughout our relationship. We admire his honesty and courage, and we are pleased to stand alongside him as he continues his career both on and off the ice.

@ReebokOfficial

We appreciate the thoughtful way in which Shane Hollander addressed an intensely personal situation and are proud to continue to support him as an ambassador for our brand.

@Gatorade

We are proud to announce Shane Hollander as our newest ambassador. We look forward to many years of partnership and supporting him in all that lies ahead.

@voyageurera

All these brands sticking with Hollander shouldn’t even be need to be said.

@MrsRozanov

Yeah. Also, fuck all the brands who dropped Rozanov like hot coals the moment he was implicated in possibly being gay. I hope he sues them all.

@PucksAndVibes

Not that I disagree but sues them for what?

@MrsRozanov

I don’t know. Libel? Perpetuating rumors? Giving scumbags a platform? These bullshit brands jumping ship only escalated the situation around him and nearly put his work visa at risk.

@LolaLovesPuck

The story has completely changed.

Yesterday everyone was talking about Rozanov being deported. Today everyone is talking about Hollander. (For some reason no one is talking about Hollander mainly coming out to protect Rozanov from being deported.)

@GoalHorn

Imagine being forced to come out because twitter keeps trying to deport someone for effectively being in the same building as you that one time. Glad Shane still did it on his own terms as much as he could but it sucks that he had to come out at all because of some piece-of-shit reporter and hockey twitter not caring about sending someone back to a country where they might get killed for a scandal they (apparently) weren’t even involved in. smh

@pucksinthenet

Hockey twitter really is full of the nastiest little fuckers in the universe.

@TheRinkReport

Montreal Shopping Hollander? – Speculation surrounding Shane Hollander’s future has reached a fever pitch after several claims about Montreal considering a trade for their first-round draft pick. It would be a drastic shift from Montreal’s previous intention to potentially build their franchise around Hollander, depending on his rookie season.

@BackupGoalie

The Montreal Voyageurs remain one of the most traditionalist teams in major league hockey (no, this is not a compliment). Is anyone really surprised they can’t deal with a queer player?

@FoxesInLA

God, they’d be so fucking stupid to trade a generational player because of who he fucks in his own bedroom.

@bears4life

Yes. They are. Stupid, that is.

Of course Montreal is going to trade Hollander. (@MontealVoyageurs thanks for the Cup, btw)

@voyageurera

Like your team wasn’t about to trade Rozanov for the exact same reason just two days ago

@bears4life

And they would have been incredibly stupid to do so

@chirpchirpMF

If the Voyageurs are actually idiotic enough to trade Hollander, every GM who doesn’t make that call the moment he hits the market should be fired. Immediately.

@pucksinthenet

As idiotic as all this may be, NHL teams are still businesses and the Voyageurs have a brand. I really don’t think Hollander is gonna fit into that anymore.

@SentinelsSince97

On the other hand, for any of the more open teams, Shane Hollander has just become the most marketable player they could possibly have on their roster. @SeattleSentinelsOfficial, how about it?

@motherpuck3r

Watching people talk about Shane Hollander being traded just because of his coming out is genuinely wild. This is someone everyone agrees is a generational talent before he’s ever hit the ice as a professional player, he’s just that good.

@RinkRat03

NHL teams are businesses. Some owners won’t want their team to be in the headlines every morning. Much less for a reason like that.

@OffTheIce

Hollander Trade Talks Narrowing Down – Negotiations surrounding Montreal rookie Shane Hollander have reportedly narrowed down to two leading candidates: the Seattle Sentinels and the LA Foxes. Sources familiar with the discussions say that both teams have held serious trade talks with the Voyageurs in recent day, with Seattle being believed to have made an aggressive offer centered on future draft picks, while LA has reportedly proposed a package focused on young players and immediate roster flexibility.

Montreal’s apparent preference for a Western Conference team as a potential trading partner has also raised eyebrows around the league as it would have them facing Hollander significantly less frequently than if he were to join a team in their own division. More than one league source has suggested that Montreal may not only be weighing what it can get for Hollander, but also how often it wants to face their once star rookie wearing an opponent’s jersey.

@FearTheFoxes

yessss come to LA, Shane

we’re just as bad as Montreal in the standings but we could not care less who you want to take home with you

@Sentinels1999

No, no, no. Seattle is the much better choice, Shane!

@bearlyliving

I mean, I know that’s not happening after how we treated Roz but g-d I wish the bears would be smart enough to throw their hats in the ring for Hollander as well we'd be unstoppable

@admiralsgirlie

LOL no way are the Voyageurs trading Hollander to their divisional rival. They’re clearly trying to minimize the chance of ever having to go up against him by sending him to a team from a different conference. And we, for one, are thankful (unless you want to trade us Hollander instead, hm? how about it?)

@voyageurHQ

We’re sending him as far away as possible because we don’t want to have to deal with having some gay pussy on our ice.

@goaliesarehotter

No, because your whole city scared out of your little cowardly homophobic racist minds that he’ll crush you every time your team has to face him. As he will.

@voyageurera

I hate everything. Why is my team even considering trading a generational talent?! Are they really THAT afraid of gay cooties????!

@SinBinToTheMax

yes they are. as most ‘real’ men tend to be.

@tampatampa43

But what if their dicks fall off from gay exposure!! All ‘real’ mean know that’s what happens if a gay guy looks at you #NoRealMenInMTL

@ChirpAndSkate

like Shane would ever even bother looking their way. i mean have you seen him!!?

Shane Hollander traded to Los Angeles

The Montreal Voyageurs have traded first-round draft pick Shane Hollander to the Los Angeles Foxes, sources told ESPN. This brings an abrupt end to the Original Six franchise’s plans for one of the most highly regarded prospects in recent hockey history.

In return, LA is sending Montreal a package that includes two young players and a veteran defenseman, according to sources familiar with the deal, representing an unusually significant investment for a rookie player who has yet to play a full NHL season, though it falls well short of the package many expected for a prospect widely regarded as a generational talent.

This decision comes after weeks of speculation surrounding Hollander’s future in Montreal following the controversy that preceded his public coming-out. While the Voyageurs appeared determined to move Hollander, multiple teams expressed immediate interest in acquiring him and despite the circumstances surrounding his trade, Hollander is still expected to enter the season as one of the league’s most closely watched rookies.

For LA, the question is whether the Foxes paid an unusually high price for an unproven rookie, or whether Montreal acquired too little in return for a player whose ceiling may be far higher than can be anticipated at the moment. For Montreal, the more immediate question may be why it was willing to find that out anywhere but on its own roster.

Afterword

End Notes

Sooo, an entire socmed chapter. No idea how that happened. Next chapter will have normal scenes as well (although the way I'm planning it right now, the story will be (mostly) from Ilya's POV, while social media 'tells' Shane's side). With hollanov not having exchanged numbers yet and so many eyes on them now, it'll also take them a while to get in contact again.

As for reasons for this fic… well, I’m pretty obsessed with ways to fix the absolute fuckery that happened to Shane after the fanmail video. Him going to a different team pretty much from the start fixes that easily. As for him going to LA of all places, for one it makes his friendship with Rose still seem like a plausible possibility (and he so very much deserves to have that one true friend who simply gets him) and I also feel likes he’d really enjoy living in a city where, no matter how excellent he might be at his sport, he’ll never be the most famous person in any room he’s in.
