Pike, Party of Seven

by Cam_04

Summary

Jackie Pike is pregnant, again. Ilya decides this is the perfect opportunity to throw a party.

Notes

I had a dream and some caffeine, so I ran with it. Hope it's as fun to read as it was to write :)

Chapter 1

Saturday

Shane beat Ilya to the front door, just barely. He’d been attempting, and failing, to act nonchalant for the last hour. Ilya had watched him, looking up from his computer every few minutes as Shane brushed imaginary lint off of surfaces, straightened throw pillows and picture frames, and opened and closed kitchen cabinets. Shane had felt his husband’s silent gaze follow him around the house, amused but affectionate, acting as a tether that kept him from drifting too far into his own head. It was a talent Ilya had picked up at some point over the years; he read Shane’s moods better than he could read them himself sometimes, and there were days like today when Ilya could ground him without a word before Shane had even realized he’d started to float away.

The echoes of the doorbell rang through the front hall as he turned in anticipation. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Ilya stand and begin to move. On instinct, Shane snapped into action and stepped forward in front of him. Ilya grinned and tried to dodge him, but Shane was quicker. He playfully shoved his husband to the side and closed the distance to the front door with a laugh. He opened it, and there stood Hayden Pike, whose face broke into a smile at the sight of his best friend.

“Shane!”

“Hey, buddy,” Shane returned the warm greeting and stepped back to open the door wider, “Come on in. Hayden stepped into the hall, kicked off his shoes, and wrapped Shane in a friendly hug.

“It’s great to see you, man, I’ve missed you!”

“I've missed you too. How’s Montreal?”

“It still kind of sucks without you there,” said Hayden frankly. He turned and spotted Ilya standing a few steps further into the house. Upon meeting Hayden’s gaze, he stepped forward and extended a hand.

“Pike, welcome.”

“Hi, Roz,” he said, glancing at the outstretched hand in mild suspicion. When Ilya said nothing else, he sighed and accepted the handshake.

“He told me he’d be nice,” said Shane.

“As if that’s ever stopped him before,” retorted Hayden, who couldn’t help grinning.

“You’d better play nice, too,” warned Shane, returning the smile.

“I make no promises,” grinned Hayden, “But for you, buddy, I’ll do my best.”

“Hopefully you’re a better friend than a hockey player, or else we are both doomed,” smirked Ilya, earning him a glare from Shane.

“Enough,” he scolded, and led the way into the living room with Hayden at his side. Ilya followed, half listening as Hayden supplied an endless stream of conversation. Anecdotes about his family were interspersed with gossip from all corners of the league, complaints about the Voyageurs— with particular emphasis on the player who’d replaced Shane, a brash American kid who was all mouth and no talent— and finally, an overly detailed recounting of a movie he’d watched the week prior.

“Something to drink?” Shane interrupted, “We’ve got cokes, beer, water…” he paused as he examined the contents of the refrigerator.

“Sure, a coke sounds great, thanks,” said Hayden, before shifting in his chair and clearing his throat. Ilya sensed he was preparing some kind of announcement, and turned back into the conversation in mild curiosity.

“So, Jackie and I have some news.”

“Ah, she is finally leaving you for zamboni driver,” said Ilya apologetically, “My condolences.”

“Oh go fuck yourself,” snapped Hayden.

“Ilya,” warned Shane.

“Jackie’s pregnant!” Hayden blurted out. Ilya’s mouth dropped open.

“Oh, wow! Um, again? No— sorry, congratulations, Hayden!” said Shane, awkward but genuine. “Seriously, that’s great.”

“Another Pike child!” Ilya said, his voice rising with delight, “Yes, this is wonderful! Best news all week. Very exciting for me.”

“What does this have to do with you?” scowled Hayden.

“I am getting another godchild.”

“Shane is the kids’ godfather.”

“Yes, and I am married to Shane. So I am also a godfather. Package deal. Is good for you— between Shane and myself, your children will have a half decent chance at learning how to actually play hockey.”

Hayden glared at him.

"Hey Shane, any chance you’re considering a divorce?”

“I was just going to text Jackie to ask her the same question.”

“Guys, come on,” pleaded Shane, “It’s been, like, half an hour.”

“Sorry,” capitulated Ilya agreeably, “But we should celebrate. News like this deserves something more than soda, yes?” He stood and clapped Hayden on the shoulder as he walked past.

“Beer? Vodka? I don’t have champagne on hand, but I think I might have a bottle of red somewhere…”

“Beer is great. Uh, thanks.” The words sounded stilted and unnatural as they fell from Hayden’s lips. Ilya observed with some amusement how uncomfortable Pike was with being the recipient of Ilya’s kindness. Interesting. He could use this in the future, if he wanted to. Be kind to Pike until he lost his fucking mind about it.

In the present, though, Ilya kept his mouth shut, and retrieved three Coronas from the fridge. He opened them, and carried them through to the other room.

“To Jackie, an incredible woman, and to the tiny miracle we will all get to meet in a few months” said Ilya frankly. Shane raised a glass, and Hayden followed suit.

“Damn right,” Hayden agreed, taking a swig of beer and continuing, “She’s the best. I don’t deserve her.”

“Mm, correct. Proof that the universe is full of random, unfair events,” said Ilya.

“I really think I’m going to physically fight you before the week is over.”

“Anything to make your visit more enjoyable,” Ilya said, filled with delight at the idea of Hayden Pike attempting to fight him. Not that he’d actually hurt Hayden, of course— that would upset Shane, and Ilya had no desire for violence. Anyway, against his will, Pike had gradually grown on him. He wasn’t a bad guy, he was just way too fun to rile up.

Ilya took a sip of his beer and glanced, first at Shane, then at Hayden. Shane met his eyes and frowned— a silent rebuke, Ilya knew, but a mild one. He wasn’t in trouble yet. Hayden was determinedly avoiding Ilya’s gaze, but his neck hadn’t turned flushed and red the way it did when he got really angry. Ilya considered— he could probably get away with one more.

“Pike,” he began, adopting a serious tone. “I do have one question for you.”

Two annoyed sets of eyes turned his way. It was a challenge to maintain the earnest expression on his face.

Pike sighed, “What, Roz?”

“I am a little concerned that maybe you don’t understand how this keeps happening. Has anyone explained to you how babies are made?”

A dish towel sailed through the air, and collided with the side of Ilya’s head.

Saturday Night

Shane lounged in bed and frowned at the book he was reading— well, the book he had been trying to read. Ilya had other plans. He'd wormed himself under Shane's arm until his head rested squarely in his lap. Blonde curls fanned out across the bottom half of the open page. Shane had tried to brush them away, and ended up lazily running his fingers through Ilya’s hair, rereading the same paragraph without absorbing any of it, and eventually giving up to look down at his husband’s contented face.

“Shane,” he said, his eyes still closed.

“Ilya.”

Ilya's eyes opened, and flitted up to meet Shane's. A mischievous grin formed on his lips.

“I have a little idea.”

Shane raised an eyebrow and smirked.

“Does it involve us getting naked?”

“Unfortunately no, not this time,” said Ilya, “But it's still a good idea.”

“Why do I get the sense that it's actually a terrible idea?” Asked Shane.

“No, you will love it. And so will Jackie. Hayden too, probably. Maybe. Maybe not—”

“Nope,” said Shane quickly, snapping his book shut and setting it aside, “You're not pissing Hayden off, not while he's supposed to be staying here all week.”

“Is not like that,” promised Ilya, sitting up. “It would be very nice, I promise. Hayden just does not know what to do when I am nice, is not my fault.”

“It's a little bit your fault.”

“Hmm. Maybe a little,” conceded Ilya. Shane sighed.

“Okay, fine, I'll bite. What's your idea?”

Ilya grinned.

“Jackie is having a baby. She will be here with the kids on Friday. We should throw a baby shower.”

Shane frowned in confusion.

“You want to… throw Jackie Pike a baby shower?”

Ilya nodded eagerly.

“A surprise party! Come on, Shane, it would be so fun!”

“We're not doing that. Who would we even invite?”

“Hayden is here for the camp, we invite the camp coaches and their families,” answered Ilya, as if this were obvious.

“You want to throw Jackie a surprise baby shower in less than a week, and only invite a bunch of hockey players she barely knows?”

“Pleeeeease?” Ilya pouted as he rolled over on top of Shane. “Don't worry, I will take care of everything. It will be perfect, she will love it.”

“And Hayden?” Shane asked. “Tell me you’re not just doing this to fuck with him. Convince me.”

“мой дорогой муж, I know he is important to you. I will not do anything to upset him.” Ilya spoke gently, and punctuated the statement with a soft, lingering kiss. Shane relented.

“You really have your heart set on this, huh?”

Ilya grinned, knowing he'd won. He pulled back to grin at his husband.

“Yes?”

Shane sighed wearily.

“Fine.”

Ilya beamed and planted a series of playful kisses on Shane's cheek.

“Thank you. Я тебя люблю. You will not be sorry.”

“We'll see,” answered Shane with a smirk, shoving him on the shoulder. Ilya chuckled and leaned in to nuzzle his neck.

“Now, what was it you were saying about getting naked?”

Sunday

Ilya: find out if Jackie has a list of gifts for the baby.

Shane: ???

Ilya: And also her favorite kind of cake.

Shane: I thought this was your project. I didn't agree to help.

Ilya: Wow. Your best friend is having his 17th child and you don't even care.

Shane: 5th child

Shane: and fuck off

Shane: and stop texting me while I'm trying to work.

Shane: camp starts tomorrow, or did you forget?

Ilya: fine. Do your boring work. I will ask Pike myself.

Shane: NO.

Shane: Goddamnit, Ilya. Hang on.

Shane: Hey, Jackie

Jackie: Hey! What's up?

Shane: I just wanted to say congrats on the pregnancy! 🙂

Jackie: Awww, thanks Shane! ♥️

Shane: I was just wondering, do you guys need anything for the new baby?

Shane: I know you probably have lots of stuff from the older kids.

Shane: But Ilya and I would like to get you something.

Jackie: That’s so sweet of you, honey.

Jackie: Honestly, if you really want to help, just get us a box or two of diapers! We’re literally drowning in everything else 😂

Shane: okay, cool. Thanks.

Shane: Also

Shane: What kind of cake do you like? Ilya wants to know.

Jackie: Red velvet 🙂

Shane: Jackie said they just need diapers. You're welcome.

Ilya: thank you. Cake?

Shane: Red velvet.

Ilya: good boy

Shane: 🖕🏼

Ilya: 😘

Least Terrible Voyageur: whatever you're doing, stop.

Ilya: I am finalizing rosters for the campers tomorrow. What should I be doing instead?

Least Terrible Voyageur: why is Shane texting Jackie about cake?

Ilya: maybe he is hungry?

Least Terrible Voyageur: don't bullshit me. Shane doesn't eat cake.

Ilya: oh yes he does.

Ilya: trust me 😈

Least Terrible Voyageur: OH

Least Terrible Voyageur: MY GOD

Least Terrible Voyageur: FUCK OFF

Least Terrible Voyageur: I hate you

Least Terrible Voyageur: so much

Least Terrible Voyageur: you've ruined cake for me forever

Ilya: That's a shame. Maybe you should try it sometime, would help you relax.

Least Terrible Voyageur: my sex life is just fine, thanks.

Ilya: yeah I know you have 28 children.

Ilya: just saying, I can text Jackie for you if you want.

Least Terrible Voyageur: DON'T TALK TO MY WIFE. I'M GOING TO KILL YOU FOR REAL ROZANOV.

Shane: Hayden just threw his phone across the equipment room.

Shane: what did you do

Ilya: Everyone is suddenly so interested in what I'm doing.

Shane: he is BRIGHT RED. Won't even look at me.

Ilya: Is he? Interesting. Is he hard too?

Shane: Jesus, Ilya I'm serious. I asked you not to piss him off.

Ilya: I didn't!

Ilya: well, not on purpose.

Shane: ILYA. ROZANOV.

Ilya: I will fix it. I'll text Jackie.

Shane: how will that help??

Ilya: just a hunch I have.

Ilya: it will work.

Ilya: Hayden can thank me later.

Monday

Ilya created Group Chat

Ilya renamed Group Chat to TOP SECRET DO NOT TELL PIKE

Ilya added Shane, Hazy, Bood, Price, Barrett, Harris, and Father Time to TOP SECRET DO NOT TELL PIKE

Ilya: okay listen the fuck up

Ilya: Hayden Pike and his wife are having their 32nd child. We are having a party to celebrate.

Shane: it's their FIFTH child, Ilya.

Hazy: aww, good for Pike!

Bood: one more and he'll have a whole starting lineup lol

Ilya: and they will all be better hockey players than him. Even the baby.

Shane: be. nice.

Ilya: ugh being nice is boring

Shane: so is sleeping on the couch

Bood: HAHA

Ilya: 😭

Ilya: okay fine I will be so nice. Watch.

Ilya: Party to celebrate new Pike baby on Saturday. 2:00 at our house. Mandatory.

Shane: it's not mandatory.

Ilya: I will never forgive you if you don't come.

Price: what the hell is going on?

Father Time: hang on. If I don't come, will you delete my number from your phone?

Ilya: no.

Ilya: I will call you 100 times every day for the rest of your life.

Ilya: which won't be long since you are already 850 years old.

Father Time: this old guy beat your ass twice this past season, asshole.

Price: this conversation is so weird. you're a weird guy, Roz.

Shane liked Price’s message

Ilya: enough! You will all come to the party and you will bring diapers. Babies need lots of diapers.

Hazy liked Ilya's message

Bood: does Jackie have a favorite brand or anything? Cassie is super particular and will only use these like organic sensitive skin ones for Milo.

Shane: she didn't say… I mean, do you think it makes that big of a difference?

Ilya: says the man who will only wear one particular brand and style of socks

Shane: shut up

Harris: aw, baby shower? this is cute. Troy and I will be there!

Barrett: wait what is happening

Barrett: baby shower?

Barrett: Harris

Harris: babe can you pick up a couple boxes of diapers on your way home?

Barrett: I'm going to need more information

Harris: scroll up 😘

Ilya: and DON'T TELL PIKE

Ilya: OR ELSE

Ilya: See Shane? See how nice I am being to your annoying friend?

Ilya: no couch?

Ilya: Shaneeee ☹️

Father Time: God bless Shane Hollander for being the only person on earth with any control over Rozanov. May he always use this superpower for good.

Ilya: stop cock blocking me old man

Ilya: or tomorrow the campers will learn how to throw gloves and break noses

Father Time: I don't think those kids want to see you embarrass yourself like that

Ilya: you’ve been in 2 fights over the last 20 years, and one of those you lost to Shane. I'm not worried.

Shane: hey I know how to fight, I'll come downstairs and prove it right now

Father Time: I didn't lose, dickhead. The refs broke it up.

Price: If it comes down to it, I'm on Hunter's side.

Barrett: oh, so Roz is gonna get his shit rocked

Hazy: RIP Cap 💔 it was nice knowing ya. Hopefully Price will make it quick and painless for you

Bood: these campers are about to witness a homicide

Harris: Hey Shane, can you film it when it happens? Could be fun promo material for the team, kind of like a blooper reel 😆

Harris: … Shane?

Hazy: do you think he murdered Roz

Father Time: every day I wonder how he hasn't already.

Tuesday

“Ilya, honey, I’m sending you an email about potential donors for the foundation. Can you and Shane take a look later tonight and let me know your thoughts?” Yuna sat at a small desk across from Ilya in the cramped office space they shared during camp weeks, tapping away at her laptop.

“Sure, no problem,” he said, frowning at a website for a local bakery on his own screen. “I’m almost done here, then I’ll go find him.” He was aware of her shutting her laptop and standing up. He paused and glanced up.

Yuna smiled sympathetically. “What are you working on over there? I thought things for the camp were pretty much handled.”

“Ah,” he hesitated, suddenly feeling self conscious, “It’s actually nothing to do with the camp. Maybe Shane told you— Hayden and his wife are expecting another baby.”

Ilya detected the briefest hint of something in her eyes before she shook her head and smiled broadly.

“That’s wonderful, they must be so excited.”

“Yes,” agreed Ilya, standing, “And so I— well, Shane and I— are hosting a party for them, as a surprise. It’s on Saturday— of course you and David are invited.”

“We’d love to see Jackie and the kids again. Do you need help with anything?”

“No, I think I have everything under control. Not much to organize, just food, cake, decorations, and a gift. Simple. But, thank you.”

Yuna nodded, warm and nurturing, and again Ilya saw the slightest tinge of… sadness, possibly? Again, it disappeared as quickly as it had appeared, and she gave him a tight hug. It lasted a beat longer than Ilya expected. It made him uneasy, as if she knew something he didn’t.

“You’re a good friend, Ilya,” she seemed to be choosing her words carefully, speaking deliberately as she pulled back and gave his arm an affectionate squeeze, “Hayden is lucky to know you.” At that, Ilya couldn’t help but laugh.

“You should tell Hayden this. He does not agree with you.”

“Well, between you and me, Hayden isn’t exactly known for his perceptual skills,” she said conspiratorially, prompting a grin to spread on Ilya’s face.

“No, he is not. Anyway, this is not for him. I am throwing a baby shower for Jackie Pike, and I am graciously allowing her mostly useless husband to attend.”

That got a genuine laugh out of Yuna, and she turned to pack up her belongings for the day.

Wednesday

Shane stood in the entry to his kitchen and tried to process the sea of brightly colored mylar that threatened to overtake his entire first floor.

“Oh my God,” he exhaled in horror, “Ilya… what the fuck did you do?”

“I may have overestimated the number of balloons we needed,” admitted Ilya, equally dumbfounded.

“How—”

“The cleaners must have let them in,” said Ilya, looking around in dismay. “I did tell them I was expecting a delivery.”

“A delivery?” sputtered Shane.

“I meant a package! Not this!”

“Ilya, it's fucking Wednesday,” hissed Shane, “What the hell are we supposed to do with them the for the next two and a half days?”

“That is what I don't understand, I ordered for Saturday morning delivery,” muttered Ilya, distractedly tapping through his phone. “And I ordered different style than this. See—” he waved the phone in Shane's face, “I have the email confirmation here— it says Saturday!”

“Then call them!” sputtered Shane. “They must have mixed up the deliveries or something. Tell them to come pick them up!”

Ilya already had the phone to his ear. After a few beats, he set it down again in frustration.

“They are closed now. Fuck, Pike will be here any minute…”

His eyes darted around the room. He began to move quickly through the space, grabbing bunches of balloons.

“Okay, so we put them in our room. Hayden won't go in there.”

“Ilya! There's got to be a hundred fucking balloons here!”

“One hundred fifty, maybe,” muttered Ilya grimly. “Is just temporary, now quick. Help me move them.”

Shane regarded his husband in bewildered irritation. Ilya made an annoyed urging sound at him and gestured to a bunch of balloons that were tied to a barstool. Shane shook his head, disgusted, and sprang into action.

“What the fuck were you thinking, ordering so many balloons, Ilya?” he asked, untangling a bunch of balloons from where they had drifted into a large potted plant.

“I was thinking, new baby deserves big celebration, balloons are less dangerous than fireworks, okay? Parties have balloons!”

“Okay, but c’mon, Ilya! Can you admit this is getting a little out of hand??”

“Is fine!” snapped Ilya, lunging after one balloon that had freed itself from the pack and was floating towards the open stairwell to the second floor.

“You called at least three different bakeries today—”

“нет, two. And one caterer.” He retrieved the balloon and glared at Shane.

“This is all for your stupid friend, anyway. You want him to have a shitty party?”

Shane scoffed and nearly let go of the fistfuls of ribbon he was holding, until the sound of a car pulling into the driveway echoed into the house.

“Shit! Move,” hissed Ilya, and Shane raced to follow him upstairs before Hayden could catch them.

Wednesday Night:

“I’m not letting you fuck me while our bedroom looks like a carnival fun house.”

Price: hey

Hazy: hey man, what's up?

Price: you want to hear something funny?

Price: so yesterday Roz was doing something on his phone but he got distracted with some of the campers and left his phone unlocked on the bench

Hazy: what the fuck did you do

Price: well he was on some website trying to order balloons, probably for this party thing this weekend

Hazy: uh oh

Price: so I ordered a hundred to be delivered to his house. They should have been delivered today.

Hazy: holy shit

Hazy: you are my hero

Hazy: Hollzy actually might kill all of us though

Price: not if he thinks it was Roz

Hazy: this is weirdly the most terrifying thing you've ever done, and that includes the time you broke that one guy's jaw in 2 places

Price: :)

Chapter 2

Chapter Summary

Thursday - Friday

Thursday

Ilya: do any of you fuckers want to confess

Ilya: or will I have to punish all of you

Father Time: what the fuck are you talking about Roz

Ilya: I think you know 😡🎈

Father Time: I genuinely have no clue what you're implying

Price: 💙

Ilya: RYAN PRICE

Ilya: my bedroom is full of balloons

Bood: what

Bood: is this like a sex thing, or

Hazy: ahahahaha this is amazing

Shane: It is absolutely not a sex thing. It's extremely unsexy, actually.

Ilya: my husband may leave me over this

Price: What a shame that would be

Barrett: wtf

Barrett: hang on. Did Price break into your house and fill it full of balloons or something?

Father Time: This might be my favorite thing that has ever happened to Roz

Ilya: Идите нахуй, ублюдки

Hazy: Oh shit. When he starts speaking Russian you know you’re in trouble.

Ilya surveyed the scene in front of him with a near-murderous glare. Why did people have to make things so unnecessarily complicated? This should have been so simple, so quick, but here he was, staring at slats of wood, plastic baggies of assorted screws, a deeply unhelpful set of printed instructions, and an allen wrench. He’d started trying to fit the pieces together according to the directions, and was now pretty sure he’d done something incorrectly. He idly wondered if he could hire someone to do the job for him, and then he remembered he was married to Shane Hollander.

“Shane,” called Ilya from the top of the basement steps in a hushed voice. Shane looked up, startled, from where he’d been watching something on his phone. Ilya was fairly certain he'd heard his own voice coming from the speaker.

“What are you watching?”

A blush spread across Shane's adorably freckled cheeks.

“Nothing.”

Ilya smirked and stepped forward, leaning one hand casually against the kitchen counter. He raised his eyebrows at Shane and waited expectantly.

Shane caved. “It just came up under my recommended videos.”

“And?”

Shane mumbled something.

“Can't hear you.”

Shane rolled his eyes, turned his phone back over, and read sarcastically, “Ilya Rozanov off-ice chirp compilation, part 2”

Ilya erupted into a fit of laughter. Shane glared at him, bringing forth a renewed wave of laughter and a deep affection for his husband.

“What, I am not enough of an asshole for you normally? Is this like, foreplay for you? Or are you trying to improve your shit talking, taking notes for next season?”

“Go fuck yourself.”

“Okay, you want to watch?”

Shane stood up and scoffed. Ilya closed the distance between them and wrapped a hand around the back of his neck.

“You, husband, are perfect,” he said tenderly.

Shane tried to hide the smile that played at the edge of his mouth.

“Why do you watch this video?”

“I told you, it just came up.”

Ilya glanced at the phone screen.

“You are seven minutes into it” he studied it more closely, “shit, how old is this clip? I'm still with Boston here.”

Shane shrugged. “Yeah, most of them are pretty old.”

Realization dawned on Ilya.

“Ah, so, most of them are directed at you?” he asked, delighted.

“I'm leaving,” huffed Shane.

“Nooo, come back,” whined Ilya, holding onto Shane's arm, “I am sorry, I'm done. No more teasing. Actually, I need help with something.”

Shane turned back to look at him, annoyed.

“Help with what?”

“Where’s Hayden?” Ilya asked, looking around.

“Outside on the phone with Jackie, why?”

He waved Shane over to the basement steps which led down to the home gym and yoga studio.

“Come with me— I don’t want Hayden to see baby present. Thought it would be safe down here.”

Shane hesitated, as if he was considering not following Ilya, but curiosity got the better of him, and he nodded.

“Oh, wow,” said Shane as he entered the small basement room that normally served as Shane's yoga studio. In front of him was a partially assembled piece of furniture— a crib, he assumed, based on the drawing on the front of the instruction booklet. An alarming number of wooden slats and random assorted hardware scattered the floor, as if the crib had been dropped into the room from 100 feet in the air. Despite this assault on Shane's preference for order, he could see that it would be a beautiful piece of furniture, if Ilya ever succeeded in actually putting it together.

“What you think?” Ilya asked expectantly.

“Wow, this is a really nice gesture, Ilya, but— um, I think they probably already have a crib at home,” said Shane, reluctant to say anything that might dampen his husband's enthusiasm.

“Oh no,” Ilya clarified, waving a hand absentmindedly, “The crib is for here, so the baby will have a place to sleep when they come to visit us.”

He went on, his voice growing soft and thoughtful.

“I was thinking, maybe we could set up a nursery in the corner of one of the guest rooms. A crib, maybe a nice chair, nothing crazy. Just something nice for the baby, maybe other babies, someday.”

Ilya had turned away from Shane while he talked, gathering up the scattered materials. Shane couldn’t see his expression while he talked, but as he finished, warmth flooded Shane’s chest. He stepped forward and put a hand on Ilya’s waist, turning him gently and pulling him in for a kiss.

“This is really sweet, Ilya,” he murmured into his husband’s chest a few minutes later, “Jackie will love it. I love it, too.”

“You like the crib? I can get a different one if not.”

“It’s perfect.”

The two men gazed at each other for a moment, not speaking. Ilya gently tilted Shane’s chin up, brushed his thumb across his freckled cheek, and kissed him again, before pulling back with twinkling eyes.

“You want to help me put it together?”

It took another 45 minutes to assemble the crib. Ilya didn’t mind the time it took, if it meant he got to sit back and watch his husband meticulously tighten screws with an allen wrench while wearing his reading glasses. Finally, once Shane had been satisfied that they had correctly followed the instructions, he retreated upstairs to find Hayden and make plans for dinner.

Ilya had intended to follow Shane immediately, but found himself reluctant to turn his back on the crib. He looked at it and let his thoughts drift, vaguely wondering why a random piece of furniture was making him emotional. It was just a crib. Just a place for a baby to sleep.

Maybe a place where, one day, their baby might sleep.

Ah.

There it was. A wave of longing washed over Ilya, surprising him with the intensity of the feeling. He knew he wanted children one day, and Shane did, too, but it had always seemed like the understanding was that kids would come along with retirement, which even now at 32 still seemed a long way away. The years stretched out in front of him, and he was uneasy to realize that he couldn’t quite tell how he felt about it.

Friday

“Hey Jackie!” Shane opened the door with a broad smile on his face. He stepped back to invite the rest of the Pike family inside. Hayden had been one step behind him, and he jumped forward now to gather up his wife in his arms, spinning her around and planting a kiss on her cheek.

“Missed me?” She laughed.

“More than you know,” he answered fondly. He dropped to his knees and pulled his children into a bear hug. They eventually squirmed out of his embrace, excited by their new surroundings and eager to explore.

“Uncle Shane! Look at my tooth!” said Ruby excitedly, beaming up at him with a wide grin.

“Hey Ruby!” said Shane, “Woah, look at you! Did you lose a tooth?”

“I lost a tooth too, see?” said Jade enthusiastically. “Only mine is on the other side.” She stuck a finger in her mouth and pulled back her lip to give him a better view.

The twins chattered back and forth, sharing the dramatic details of how and when they each lost their teeth. Amber eagerly held a battered stuffed penguin up for Shane’s inspection, and Arthur jumped up and down while he shared a story about-- well, to be honest, Shane wasn’t quite sure. His brain was struggling to process the sudden influx of sensory input. He nodded, attempting to focus on each child in turn.

Jackie smiled sympathetically at him and began gently ushering her children further into the house.

“Shoes off, kiddos,” she instructed as Hayden bent down to help Amber.

“I hear children in my house!” A booming voice came from the back of the house. “Where are they? I’m going to catch all of these little children and eat them up!”

“Uncle Ilya!” the children shrieked with delight as Ilya appeared around the corner. He dropped into a playful menacing crouch, and began to run towards the kids. They scattered like pinballs, running in four different directions. Amber, the youngest, ran directly towards Ilya. He scooped her up and held her over his head, beaming at her.

“Amber, мое солнышко! You are getting so big! Look at you, you are even taller than me! Soon you will be too tall to fit into my house!” The little girl giggled with delight. Ilya set her gently back on the ground and lowered himself to one knee so his face was level with hers.

“Where did your brother and sisters go?” Ilya asked in mock seriousness. “I have a big problem and I need your help! Can you help me?”

Arthur, who had run into the kitchen, peeked out from behind the refrigerator.

“What kind of help?” he asked curiously.

Ilya stood up.

“It’s a super big problem! I have these children I need to buy gifts for and I don’t know what to get them! You will help me decide what to buy for them, okay? I was thinking maybe some drums, or paintball guns, maybe one of those big bouncing houses to jump around in, what do you think?” As he finished the question, his gaze flicked to Hayden and he winked.

“You know what, go ahead and get the paintball guns. They can use you as target practice.” retorted Hayden. Ilya grinned and turned his attention back to the children.

“Okay. I have another problem. Yesterday I went to the store and bought five giant candy bars. I brought them home and now I can’t find them anywhere!”

“We’ll help you find them!” said Jade determinedly.

“How did you lose the candy bars?” demanded Arthur skeptically.

Ilya assumed a grave look. “It is your Uncle Shane,” he sighed, and looked around as if he were about to share a secret, “You see, he is afraid of chocolate. It is such a silly thing, da? But I don't want him to be scared, so I hide the sweets from him. But I forgot where I put them! Maybe if you help me find them you can have some as a thank you!”

Shane rolled his eyes as the children looked back at him and giggled. Then, with a nod of encouragement from Ilya, they bounded off across the house in search of chocolate.

Ilya stood and watched the children go with a smile. After a moment, he turned back towards the other adults.

“Jackie,” he said warmly, pulling her in for a hug, “Поздравляем! You must be so happy.” He turned and gestured towards the living room.

“Very happy, and a bit overwhelmed!” she laughed breezily, following him, “These four already keep me on my toes, but hey— what’s one more?”

“Anything to drink, Jackie?” asked Shane, making a detour into the kitchen. Hayden followed.

“Just some water for now, please!”

Shane took a glass out of the cabinet and began to fill it with ice and water from the fridge. Hayden leaned against the counter with a dreamy look that made Shane smile.

“What are you thinking about?” he asked.

“My amazing fucking wife, man,” Hayden answered under his breath, “I mean, she’s just so fucking cool.”

Shane chuckled, “You don’t have to convince me.”

“I’ll be honest, I was kind of freaking out when she told me we were having another one,” said Hayden.

“Yeah, that’s a fair reaction,” laughed Shane.

“Yeah. Definitely wasn’t expecting that news, but she was so happy. And she’s the best mom, so I know we’re gonna be fine.”

Shane nodded and walked towards the living room. Ilya and Jackie had continued through the house and out into the backyard, followed by the children who were taking turns chasing Ilya around the lawn. Jade tagged him, and he made a big dramatic show of flopping down in the grass, a wide smile on his face as the kids whooped and jumped around him. Shane felt his own face reflect the expression, as a familiar feeling spread through him: utter fondness, mixed with a tinge of longing.

Hayden nudged Shane’s shoulder. He realized he’d been silently watching Ilya for too long and had possibly ignored a remark from Hayden.

“Sorry, what was that?”

Hayden’s lip quirked.

“Dude, you are so in love it’s insane.”

“Shut up,” laughed Shane, stepping through the door into the backyard.

“Daddy, come get Uncle Ilya, he’s the bad guy and we have to catch him!” Ruby pointed to Ilya, who had escaped and was now dodging the other three children.

Hayden’s face erupted into a huge smile.

“Oh it would be my pleasure.”

Hayden gave chase, prompting a laugh of genuine surprise from Ilya. He put on a renewed burst of speed with Hayden following close behind. Shane settled on a lawn chair next to Jackie, who laughed and cheered on her husband.

In the end, it was Jade who tackled Ilya the second time, a block by Hayden slowed him down enough that she was able to jump on his back and bring him tumbling to the earth. He let out a roar of defeat, which devolved into peals of laughter echoing throughout the yard as all four children climbed on top of him.

“He’s so good with the kids,” murmured Jackie.

“The best,” agreed Shane as the wistful ache grew in his chest once again.

Chapter 3

Chapter Summary

Saturday- Party day!

Chapter Notes

Look, I don't know what the floor plan of Shane and Ilya's house is, I'm not Mr. Real Estate, just pretend it makes sense 🤫😅.

This one got kind of sappy at the end, sorryyyy. It's happy though I promise!

See the end of the chapter for more notes

Saturday

Ilya: Okay. Shane is taking the Pikes out for breakfast to keep them out of the house before the party. Now you can all come over to help set up.

Hazy: uhh I never agreed to that

Father Time: yeah, nice try Roz

Ilya: Well I was going to do it myself

Ilya: And then Price ordered 1000 balloons to be delivered to my house

Ilya: So now I think you will all help me instead of whatever fun Saturday morning plans you had

Bood: Dude none of us even knew about that, why are we being punished

Father Time: I bet it’s because Hollander is pissed.

Ilya: Shane is fine

Hazy: He seemed kinda pissed last time I talked to him.

Shane: I’m still in this chat, guys. And I’m fine.

Price: Did you like the balloons?

Shane: No, Price, I did not.

Ilya: All of you will be here at 10:00 or else.

Price: Nope.

Bood: Sorry boss, got plans

Father Time: I’m still not sure I’m coming to the party.

Hazy: I can try to swing by early to help set up, no promises though.

Ilya: you are all dead to me. Terrible friends. Forget it, I will do it myself.

Shane created Group Chat

Shane renamed Group Chat to Party Setup Crew

Shane added Hazy, Bood, Price, Barrett, Harris, and Hunter to Party Setup Crew

Shane: Hey. Assholes. Go help my husband set up for this stupid party.

Hazy: Do we have to, Hollzy?

Shane: Yes you fucking do.

Price: why?

Shane: Because you all love him even if you won’t admit it, and for some reason this is important to him.

Hunter: Love is a strong word.

Shane: And because you KNOW he’d do the same for you. How many times has he shown up for each of you?

Bood: UGHHHH come onnnnnn, the guilt trip? Seriously Hollzy?

Shane: AND because if you don't, I will text all of your partners and tell them you are being shitty friends to me and Ilya.

Bood: WOW.

Bood: I WAS ALREADY GOING TO SAY YES DUDE

Shane: Good. Glad to hear it.

Hazy: So wait, this whole thing isn’t just an elaborate attempt to fuck with Pike?

Shane: No.

Shane: Okay, yeah it’s probably a little bit of that.

Shane: But no. I think this is actually important to him.

Shane: absolutely none of this leaves this chat, by the way.

Hazy: Okay, okay, I’ll go help.

Hazy: You know we all have Rozy’s back.

Bood: Of course we do

Barrett: Sorry, just seeing all of this. Harris and I will be there in an hour.

Shane: Thanks Troy. Bring Chiron, it'll make Ilya happy.

Barrett liked Shane’s message

Hunter: Hollander. You don't have Kip’s number, and anyway he'd be on my side.

Shane: God, Scott, don’t be a baby. Do this and I’ll owe you one, okay?

Hunter: I’m holding you to that.

Shane: FINE.

Price: will you all stop texting me if I agree to go?

Hazy: Oh you’re coming, Pricey, you’re the one who pissed him off. Get dressed, I’m picking you up in 20.

Shane: Fucking right, Hazy. I’ve had to sleep without the ceiling fan for the last two nights and I keep walking into balloons on my way to the bathroom in the middle of the night. Price better be there.

Price: lol

Price: okay, fine. Only because I kind of want to see this for myself.

Ilya threw his phone down on the sofa, disgusted. Shane had herded the Pike family out of the house twenty minutes earlier with a promise of brunch and a visit to a local playground. Ilya had faked a headache, which was rapidly manifesting itself into existence as he ran through a mental checklist of preparations he would apparently have to manage himself.

The cake was scheduled to be delivered sometime in the next hour. For food, Ilya had eventually settled on a local food truck which, if the majority of reviewers were to be believed, boasted some of the best tacos and burritos in Ontario.

Definitely no cake for any of those fucking traitors, he thought darkly as he began picking up children’s toys, books, and clothing off the floor of the living room. They hadn’t even been here twenty four hours, and had already scattered a seemingly endless supply of miscellaneous belongings across nearly every room in the house, despite Hayden and Jackie’s constant attempts to pick up after them.

A chime came from Ilya’s phone; a text message. He crossed the room and glanced at his phone briefly without unlocking it; the preview showed it was from Hayes. Probably more bullshit in that stupid group chat. He set the phone down again and stooped to pick up a lone sock, a battered picture book, and a matchbox car from the carpet. These he deposited at the foot of the staircase to be brought upstairs once he was confident he’d collected all of the children’s belongings.

Another chime interrupted the silence. Ilya sniffed in irritation and picked up the phone once more, this time unlocking it. Rather than opening his texts, he navigated to the music app, connected to the bluetooth speaker system he’d had installed when he moved in, and put on one of his workout playlists. Something to keep him moving.

The doorbell rang. He glanced at the clock— most likely the bakery delivery. Ilya walked to the door and opened it, only to find Wyatt Hayes and a reluctant looking Ryan Price standing on his front porch. Hayes held up a twelve pack of beer like an olive branch, and Price awkwardly held a large bag of ice in each hand.

“Hey, Cap,” he said, taking a step forward. Ilya automatically stepped back and opened the door wider to allow the two men to enter. Hayes kicked off his shoes and walked back to the kitchen. “Room in the fridge for the beer, or should I throw it in a cooler?”

Ilya took a moment to process and consider his next words.

“Cooler is in the garage, hang on.” Hayes nodded and set the beer on the counter.

“You are done being dickheads, then?” Ilya asked sullenly.

“I am!” said Hayes cheerfully, “Sorry, Roz. I’ll get the cooler set up, then you can put me to work.”

Ilya turned to glare at Price, who was still holding the ice and looking unsure of himself.

“Uh, where should I put these?”

Ilya debated for a second telling Price exactly where he could shove his stupid bags of ice, but decided against it. He was pretty sure Price’s brawling days were long over, but still, Ilya didn’t want to risk it.

“Kitchen sink,” he grumbled, grabbing one and thudding it heavily into the empty sink. He turned back to Price with a scowl but before he could speak, the doorbell rang again. He spun on a heel and went to answer it.

Over the next 15 minutes, Ilya’s house filled with camp coaches who each displayed varying levels of enthusiasm. Hayes, Bood, and Harris were chatting away happily while setting up a table with plates, cutlery, and plastic cups. Chiron, who had spent several minutes wriggling happily around Ilya's legs as he patted him, had settled comfortably on the kitchen floor under the table. Troy and Hunter had disappeared to the basement to retrieve the crib, and Price stood in the kitchen, awkwardly as ever, awaiting instructions.

Ilya surveyed the group with deep skepticism.

“What the fuck are you all doing here?” he demanded to no one in particular.

“You told us to come help,” said Harris.

“Yeah and you all told me to fuck off,” frowned Ilya, “so?”

“Shane reminded us that we like you,” called Troy from the basement stairs, appearing a moment later.

“Did he?” said Ilya flatly.

“We were lightly threatened,” added Hunter, following Barrett, crib in tow.

Ilya turned abruptly towards the staircase so that the group wouldn't see the stupid, fond grin that was spreading across his face.

“Price. Upstairs with me,” he said, hoping his tone was convincingly brusque. He strode up the stairs followed by the lumbering man. At the top of the stairs, he continued down a hallway before pausing at one door. He turned the handle of the door and swung it open, surveying Ryan with a look of deep irritation.

“This is my bedroom. It is normally a very nice bedroom. Unfortunately, you filled it with balloons three days ago.”

“I'm pretty sure you put the balloons in there, Roz. I only sent them to the house.”

Ilya scowled murderously and gestured towards the doorway. Price craned his neck into the room and let out a short laugh in spite of himself. The room was, in fact, completely full of balloons. On the far wall was a closet out of which spilled a sea of shimmery pastel orbs. Three large bunches of probably 15 or 20 balloons each, their ribbons bunched together and tied to small weights, sat perched on top of a dresser. Another bunch, this one containing a medley of differently shaped balloons, floated above an armchair in the corner. Every inch of the ceiling was completely obscured; sunlight drifting in from the windows bounced off the shiny surfaces, almost turning the room into some sort of strange silent dance club.

“I would gladly have gone the rest of my life without ever inviting you into my bedroom, but someone needs to get all this shit set up downstairs. And since you’re the one who is responsible for them,I think this will be your job.”

Price bit his lip to keep from laughing again, and nodded once.

“If you say so, Roz. Where do you want them?”

“Doorbell!” called Bood’s voice from downstairs. Ilya turned back down the hall towards the stairs.

“I don’t fucking care as long as they are out of my bedroom in the next ten minutes,” he snapped, “And don’t go through any of my fucking drawers.”

Thirty seconds later, Ilya stood dumbfounded at the scene that met him at the front door. A young man held two large bunches of plump latex balloons in pale blue, pink, and white.

“Delivery for Mr. Rozanov?” he offered.

Right. Because Ilya had forgotten to cancel the balloon order, the one that he’d actually ordered.

The delivery man’s smile faltered, and Ilya realized he hadn’t said anything. Wordlessly, he nodded and waved him inside.

Shane glanced down at his phone, and then back up out of the passenger side window of Hayden’s SUV as it turned down the street towards his house. From the rear of the car came a series of happy voices, singing along with the children’s music that floated out of the stereo.

He’d texted Ilya half an hour ago, warning that they were on their way home. Ilya had immediately sent back a confusing, frazzled message about mixed up deliveries or something, and had demanded that Shane find some way to stall their return.

He’d done his best. He’d purposely given Hayden wrong directions for about ten minutes, until it became clear to the entire car they’d gone in the wrong direction. Hayden teased him mercilessly for managing to get lost in the city where he’d lived for the majority of his life, and although Shane bristled at the suggestion, he couldn’t think of any way to refute it without admitting the truth. So, he’d kept his mouth shut and texted Ilya, who hadn’t responded.

Hayden’s car turned up the driveway. Shane held his breath, completely at a loss as to what to expect.

The driveway was empty. Hopefully that was a sign that the coaches were smart enough to take an uber or park down the street, and not a sign that they’d ended up ignoring his texts.

Hayden parked, and he and Jackie began the elaborate process of extracting children from car seats. Shane took the opportunity to send one last desperate text, this time to Ilya’s group chat.

Shane: We are outside. Hope you’re ready.

The Pikes began walking towards the house. Shane felt keenly anxious and silently prayed that Ilya had managed to pull everything together.

The Party

“Surprise!”

Ilya stood proudly in the center of the living room, surrounded by the camp coaches and Shane’s parents, with his arms outstretched and a wide smile on his face as the Pikes made their way into the house.

Jackie’s mouth dropped open in shock. Her eyes darted around wildly and she let out a small gasp as realization dawned on her. The kids began to cheer and shriek excitedly at the decorations, and at the giant cake which sat proudly in the center of a second table, surrounded by a sea of smaller assorted pastries and chocolates.

“Ilya,” she started, crossing the room to give him a hug, “I don’t even know what to say, this is amazing. Thank you.” Her voice faltered and she dabbed a tissue in the corner of her eye.

Ilya returned the hug and pulled back with a shrug.

“Oh no, don’t thank me, I did nothing. Was all Hayden’s idea.”

Hayden, who had been gazing around the room in astonishment, snapped his head to look in Ilya’s direction. His face betrayed conflicting emotions— distrust mingled with confusion.

Jackie turned back to look at her husband, who quickly rearranged his face into an expression of adoration for his wife.

“Hayden, babe, oh my God,” she said, approaching him, her voice laden with emotion. “You are incredible. Thank you.”

He wrapped his arms around her in a gentle embrace and kissed her softly.

“What can I say? I’m the luckiest guy in the world,” Hayden said, pulling Jackie in for another tight hug. His eyes met Ilya’s again, and a tiny smile appeared on his face.

The cake was delicious. Ilya leaned back against the kitchen island and took a second bite. He looked out across the house where the guests mingled. The doors to the backyard had been thrown open and a warm, gentle breeze flowed through the house. The children were in the backyard with Harris, Bood, and Chiron; excited yelling and barking floated into the house with the breeze. It was an intensely good noise, so wonderful that it almost made Ilya’s heart ache.

“Good call on the red velvet,” Hayden appeared at Ilya’s side. Ilya glanced at him and nodded before turning back to look out at the party.

“Good thing Shane texted Jackie after all then, hm?”

Hayden let out a soft laugh. Out of the corner of Ilya’s eye, he saw him take a deep breath.

“You didn’t have to do all this.”

Ilya shrugged. “She is a good woman. She deserves good things.”

“No— I mean, of course she is, and she does. I meant you didn’t have to give me credit.”

Ilya paused.

“You spent at least an hour on the phone with your family every evening this week. Your wife loves you very much. Your children love you very much. It kills you to be away from them, I think.”

Hayden said nothing, but looked down at his beer.

“This,” Ilya continued, gesturing towards the party, “is for Jackie, obviously, but also it is for the only good member of the Voyageurs.”

“I thought I was the fifteenth best.”

“Mm. For hockey, yes— Well, fourteenth now that Shane is a Centaur. But that is not what I meant.”

Hayden nodded. Out of the corner of his eye, Ilya saw his throat bob. Neither man said anything for a moment. Eventually, Ilya finished his cake, and turned to face Hayden.

“So. Do I get to be godfather now?”

Hayden’s eyes twinkled and he let out a soft laugh.

“Yeah, man, I guess so,” he nodded, “But Shane gets final say on all godparenting decisions.”

Ilya smirked. “No problem. I am very good at convincing Shane to agree with me.”

“Obviously.”

Shane took a sip of ginger ale one hand and wondered how long it would take for his house to return to its normal orderly state. Ilya had clearly taken to party planning with the intensity and single-mindedness he normally reserved for the rink or the bedroom: Banners and streamers decorated the walls, a beautiful pink and yellow floral arrangement graced a table that was overflowing with boxes of diapers and other wrapped packages, and somehow, for some unknowable reason, there were even more balloons than there had been when he’d left this morning.

He’d watched his husband move gracefully around the room, delivering drinks and food to partygoers, swapping chirps with the coaches, and entertaining the children with over-the-top, playful antics. He’d let Ilya wrap an arm around his shoulder as he presented Jackie with the crib— she’d burst into tears again as he explained his plan to set up a nursery space in one of the guest rooms. He’d watched as Hayden approached Ilya for a quiet conversation in the kitchen, and as they spoke, his heart had swelled with a love for both of them that was almost painful in its enormity.

The afternoon wore on, and the party began to wind down. Hunter and Price had, predictably, politely taken their leave after the cake had been cut and the presents opened. Yuna and David had left shortly afterwards. Outside, Bood and Hayes were taking turns sucking the helium out of balloons and singing the Canadian National Anthem, to the immense delight of the Pike children.

“So?” Shane’s favorite voice found its way into his ear as a set of strong, gentle arms wrapped around his waist. “It was a good party, yes?”

Shane covered Ilya’s arms with his own and tilted his head to bump softly against Ilya’s.

“You did great. Jackie and Hayden didn’t even know what to say,” Shane murmured. “Thank you, by the way.”

“For what?” murmured Ilya. His thumb brushed against Shane’s arm in slow, soft strokes.

“For loving them as much as I do.”

“Hmm, only Jackie. I only put up with Hayden because I have not yet figured out how to get rid of him.”

“I saw you guys talking earlier,” said Shane, “You love him too.”

“Может быть,” he murmured.

“Where are Jackie and Hayden, anyway?” asked Shane, looking around.

“I can guess,” came Ilya’s reply.

“Oh,” Shane squirmed, “ew.”

“What? It’s not like Jackie can get double pregnant. Let them enjoy it, I’m sure they don’t get much privacy at home,” chuckled Ilya.

“Ugh, I guess.”

Ilya’s arms dropped, and he came to face Shane.

“Maybe we should sneak off too,” he purred, cupping Shane’s cheek with one hand.

Shane glanced at the partygoers in the backyard before bringing his attention back to Ilya.

“Oh?”

Ilya leaned in. His mouth brushed Shane’s ear.

“I know a place where we can go that is very private and very sexy. Big bed, good mattress, and best of all? No balloons.”

Shane laughed, and pulled his husband in for a kiss.

“Let’s wrap this party up and check it out.”

Saturday Night

Ilya reclined in bed, his mind quiet and his eyes half closed. Shane was curled up next to him, one leg draped over Ilya’s, his head resting on Ilya’s chest. Ilya wrapped one protective arm around him, holding him close with the gentle pressure that helped ground and settle Shane at the end of a long day. He let his thoughts drift aimlessly, content in post-coital bliss.

“Ilya?” Shane murmured sleepily.

“Hm?”

“Does it bother you?”

“What, любимый?”

“How other people can just… like, decide to have kids, and then they do. How it’s so simple.”

Ilya exhaled slowly, not wanting to disturb Shane with a sudden movement.

“You been thinking about this this week?”

“Mm,” nodded Shane, “A little.”

“Me too,” confessed Ilya, “And, yes, it does, a little.”

“I’m happy for them,” said Shane. “I’m so happy. I’m glad they haven’t had to struggle with fertility issues, or jump through a bunch of hoops or hold off until retirement,” his voice drifted off.

Ilya bent down and gently kissed the top of Shane’s head.

“да, дорогой, I know. I understand,” his voice came out soft and trembling as the ache in his chest threatened to spill over into tears.

Neither spoke for a moment. Ilya heard Shane sniff, and pulled him closer.

“I haven’t changed my mind,” Shane said quietly after a minute. “I still don’t see how we could until retirement. And I'm sorry, Ilya, I'm really sorry, but I’m not ready for that yet. Probably not for a while.”

“I feel the same.”

“You do?” Shane raised himself up on an elbow and looked searchingly at Ilya.

“Yes.” Ilya held his gaze; his voice was steady.

“It just seemed like there were a few times this week when maybe you were having second thoughts,” ventured Shane tentatively.

Ilya sighed.

“Yeah, okay, maybe I had a few moments. But they pass. Nothing has changed for me, I am not ready to retire. I have never been happier and better on the ice than I am now. And I am not willing to let someone else raise our children while we travel across the continent playing a sport that could permanently injure either of us at any moment. I am sure of these things.”

“Yeah, that all makes sense. I just was afraid things had changed for you.”

“No,” said Ilya quietly.

Silence fell over the room.

“I'm glad we're on the same page,” sighed Shane after a moment, “I just wish we didn't have to choose between hockey and having a family.”

Ilya shifted onto his side and lowered himself until his face was even with Shane’s. He pressed their foreheads together, then pulled his husband close and kissed him deeply. When their lips broke apart, he spoke, tender and earnest.

“Listen to me. You don't have to choose— you have a family, моя любовь. We are a family. You and me. Your parents. And yes, I hope very much that someday our family will grow to include a child— maybe children, if we are lucky— but this right here is enough for me. If we wait ten years. If it never happens. This family is enough. You are enough, more than enough, Shane. Okay?”

Shane nodded. His voice was barely a whisper. “Okay.”

“Is it enough for you?”

Shane let out a sound halfway between a laugh and a sob. He nodded and pulled Ilya back in for a kiss.

“Yes.”

“Okay then?”

“Okay.”
