hi! welcome to my "Ilya tells the centaurs about jane from the start" fic :)
I had so much fun writing this!! I've got 12.5 out of 14 chapters fully written so hopefully I'll be updating this pretty regularly (depending on how fast I can edit and format chapters). Most of this is a texting fic, but there are some scenes scattered in where I felt like it was needed!
This follows the canon timeline of events pretty closely, with only small differences but I'll get into that on the individual chapter notes 🫡
Also some players/partners didn't have names in canon so I made some of them up. Here's a list for reference :)

we’d be meeting someone new every week
Ilya liked the Centaurs, even though they were very, very different from the Bears. They’d been wary at first and Ilya couldn’t really blame them for the way they were cautious around him. He knew he had a reputation. A reputation that he liked to party all night at the clubs, to hook up with countless women, to drive flashy cars. It was a reputation that didn’t really match his decision to move to Ottawa. A part of him had found it very amusing to see the shock and speculation that had followed the announcement of his move to the Centaurs. Another part of him was sad he couldn’t just tell the truth, that he had moved to be closer to the love of his life. Because Shane was everything to him, and it was killing him that he couldn’t tell the world that he was dating a boring, beautiful hockey player.
Zane Boodram, a fellow alternate captain, had been the one to take charge of his warm welcome to the team, admittedly with a little bit of bafflement.
“I have to admit, Roz – is it ok if we call you Roz? – that we were all really confused when they announced you’d signed with us. But whatever your reasons, we’re really happy to have you here,” Bood had said earnestly.
“Yes, you must be happy you will start winning now that I am here, yes?” Ilya hadn’t been able to help himself with a smirk.
Luckily, Bood had laughed and given him a friendly slap on the back. “So you’re actually as much of an asshole as they say you are.”
“Pfft, lies and slander. I am an angel.”
Bood had chuckled and rolled his eyes. “But Roz, seriously, welcome to the team. Oh! Almost forgot. My wife Cassie told me to mention that if you’ve got a partner, they’re more than welcome in the WAG’s chat.” At Ilya’s confused expression he’d added, “wives and girlfriends.”
His tone had been sincere but Bood was obviously just following his wife’s orders. He didn’t actually expect Ilya to have a partner, and suddenly Ilya wanted nothing more than to blurt out the truth.
Instead, he’d just swallowed back the urge and said, “Ah, right. No partner for chat for now, but maybe in the future, yes?”
Bood had clapped him on the back again, before turning back to his stall. “Sure, you let me know, Roz!”

It was that first conversation with Bood that Ilya couldn’t get out of his head.
It had been three weeks since training camp had started and since then, the team had started warming up to him. The wariness had faded once they realized he wasn’t quite the asshole they thought he was, or the party animal they had expected. A few of them had brought it up, when the team had been out for drinks, asking if Ilya had already checked out Ottawa’s meagre nightclub offerings. But he had just shrugged and said maybe he’d go if the team ever wanted to go together, but no he hadn’t checked it out. He’d gotten some baffled and curious looks but Ilya could tell they were rethinking their impression of him.
These days he had no interest in spending his spare time at the clubs when he could be spending it with his super hot boyfriend instead.
Specifically, railing his super hot boyfriend.
“Holy fuck,” Shane panted as Ilya rolled off him to flop down next to him. “I don’t think I can move after that.”
“Good. I told you I would fuck you hard. I do not lie about that,” Ilya said through his own attempts at trying to catch his breath.
Shane laughed. “Shut up.”
It didn’t take long for Shane to start squirming in discomfort from the mess so Ilya quickly cleaned them both up before he settled back at Shane’s side to cuddle.
“How’s it been with the team so far?”
“Good. Well the hockey part is not so good. Could be better. But they are good people. I like them,” Ilya said truthfully.
“That’s good.” Shane paused, seemingly gearing up to say something else. “And you’re happy here? So far?”
“Yes, Shane. I am happy. Moving to Ottawa was the right choice for me I think. Bonus that it was right for us too.”
Shane let out a relieved breath. “Ok good. I just– I’ve been worried. You gave up a lot coming here. I just want to make sure you’re happy.”
It was sweet that Shane worried so much for him. Ilya knew that his move to Ottawa had been a huge adjustment, not just for him, but for Shane as well. It was of course, a good adjustment, being only two hours away from each other now, but sometimes Shane still acted like it was too good to be true, like he was waiting for Ilya to be ripped away from him.
“I am happy, moya lyubov,” Ilya said, trying to soothe Shane's worries, but something unwanted must have leaked into his voice because Shane lifted his head from Ilya’s chest and gave him a searching look.
“Why can I sense a ‘but’ in there?”
Damn Shane for knowing him too well. “No ‘buts’, sweetheart. Don’t worry,” he said, trying to push Shane back down, but he just frowned and sat up further to look at Ilya properly.
“No, Ilya, don’t do that. You can talk to me. If there’s something we can improve to make this whole situation better, let’s work it out together.”
Ilya’s first instinct was to continue to deflect but looking at Shane’s earnest face had him crumbling within seconds.
“Ok it’s– I have been… thinking. About something Bood said to me on my first day.” Ilya hesitated, but Shane just looked at him expectantly, waiting for him to continue. “He said if I have partner, they are welcome in WAG chat and of course I had to say no partner. I… it didn’t feel good to lie about that,” Ilya admitted, his head ducked down, afraid of Shane’s reaction. “It’s ok. I know there is nothing we can do about it. It’s just how it is,” he rushed out before Shane could say anything, suddenly desperate to reassure him that he was still committed to their plan.
When Shane didn’t say anything for a long moment, Ilya risked a glance at him, already mentally preparing for the worst. But Shane didn’t look mad or angry or even sad. He had the expression he got when he was thinking very hard to solve a problem. It was usually an expression Ilya found very sexy on Shane, but right now it just made him feel panicked.
“Shane, it’s ok. There is no problem! Just sad feelings about our situation. Nothing to do about it,” Ilya repeated, already regretting opening his mouth about his dumb feelings.
Shane looked Ilya in the eye and said the last thing he ever expected in this scenario. “I think there’s something we can do about it.”
“What–”
“What if you just… told a half truth?”
“What do you mean?” Ilya asked, his heart beating wildly at what Shane could be implying.
“You could say you have a partner. Jane. It’s not a lie but it’s not the full truth either,” Shane shrugged, “I know we would still be hiding, but… maybe this will make it less unbearable for you? If you could talk about me under a fake name?”
Ilya knew he was gaping a little. Of all the things he had expected Shane to say, he hadn’t thought this was even a possibility. “I… sweetheart, are you sure?” Ilya checked, not daring to get his hopes up.
“I mean obviously don’t say anything incriminating, but yeah. I’m sure,” Shane nodded decisively. “Maybe in the long run, this could be good? When we come out eventually, at least your team won’t be completely blindsided by your long term relationship. They’ll just be a little blindsided by my gender.”
Ilya choked out a laugh, endeared by how Shane was sometimes unexpectedly funny. Shane looked pleased with himself, and Ilya couldn’t believe this man was really his.
When we come out eventually, Shane had said. When they’d first gotten together, they’d spoken about what the future looked like and every time they spoke as if they couldn’t come out until they retired but as time went on, Ilya knew that wasn’t what he wanted anymore and this was the first time Shane had given any indication that it wasn’t what he wanted anymore either.
“You think we can come out before we retire?” Ilya asked quietly.
“I mean… I know we said maybe after retirement, but that’s so far away. It’s a long time to hide, right?” Shane frowned. “I don’t know when we should do it but promise you’ll talk to me if you ever feel like the secrets are getting too much? We can figure something out, like how we did today.”
Ilya’s heart swelled with so much affection for Shane, who loved having plans in place and very rarely deviated from them, telling Ilya that their original plan could be reworked, could be brought forward even. All they had to do was talk to each other.
He gently grabbed Shane’s face to bring their lips together in a sweet kiss, then rested their foreheads together. “Yes, yes I promise, sweetheart. I love you so much. Thank you.”
Shane bumped their noses together. “I love you too and I’m glad you talked to me about how you were feeling. I just want you to be happy.”
“I want you to be happy too. I want us happy together.”
“I guess we have the same goals then,” Shane said, his lips quirking up in a small smile that Ilya returned.
“There is just one more thing…”
“What is it?” Shane said warily.
Ilya grinned. “You will need to join the WAG chat.”
A look of horror passed over Shane’s face. “No. Nope! Absolutely not.”
“Bood! Future is here, I will send you my Jane’s number for WAG chat, yes?”
Bood, who was taking a drink from his bottle, choked, spraying water all over the floor of the locker room and over three of his teammates.
“Bood what the fuck!”
“Hey! I literally JUST showered!”
Ilya smirked, watching as Bood hurriedly apologized to everyone caught in the crossfire. Shane was right, he was already having a lot of fun with this.
“Jesus Christ, thanks for that, Roz. Very funny,” Bood chuckled.
“What the hell did Roz even say?” Evan Dykstra called out across the room, grabbing everyone’s attention.
“He joked about having someone to add to the WAGs chat,” Bood explained, and the locker room erupted into laughter.
“You sure got him good there, Roz,” Nick Chouinard said, clapping Ilya on the back.
Ilya waited until the laughter had quietened down before he said, “Ok, but Bood, you will give Cassie my Jane’s number, yes?”
Bood rolled his eyes good naturedly. “Sure, Roz,” he said indulgingly. “How long have you been with this Jane then?”
“Must be at least a week if she’s getting an invite to the WAG’s chat,” Jack Boyle called out, to more laughter.
Ilya fired off a text to Bood with Shane’s number, before answering his question. “We have been officially together for a year, but we have been uh… something for long time,” Ilya shrugged.
There was some more laughter at that, but Bood was staring at his phone with a shocked look on his face.
“Wait, Roz what is this? Are you being serious?” Bood said, and something in his tone made everyone in the locker room pause and look between the two of them.
Ilya raised an eyebrow at him. “Yes? You think I joke about this?”
Bood gaped at him, his mouth opening and closing silently.
“Wait, what’s happening?” said Patrick Holmberg.
Ilya blew out an exaggerated sigh. “I don’t know what is so hard to understand. First day I’m here Bood says ‘Roz, if you have partner, they are welcome in WAG chat’. But my Jane is so private and very shy so I say ‘thank you Bood, maybe in future’. But then I say to my Jane, ‘Jane I know you don’t want to be public about our relationship because I am so sexy and famous and everyone will be nosy about our sexy life but I like my team very much, I would like to tell them, and also you can join WAG chat.’ And she says ‘ok’, so now we are here.”
The entire team stared at him in varying degrees of disbelief. There were a lot of wide eyed looks and some gaping mouths. Ilya couldn’t wait to tell Shane all about this.
No one seemed to know what to say. Finally Tanner Dillon said, “So uh… Jane is real?”
“Yes, Dillon,” Ilya sighed again. “Like I would say on the ice, please keep up.”
“Holy shit, is this why you moved to Ottawa? To be close to your girl?” Boyle said in disbelief, before Dillon could defend himself.
Ilya nodded. “Is biggest reason, yes. I could not join Montreal obviously but Ottawa is close enough, much closer than Boston.”
“She lives in Montreal?” said Chouinard
“Yes, but she is originally from Ottawa.”
Someone whistled low and long. “Damn, we gotta send this girl a fruit basket or something. Thank her for being the reason we got Rozanov.”
“Damn right. We owe her!”
“So when do we get to meet her Roz?”
Ilya chuckled nervously. “Ah, maybe not for long time. She is very busy and very private. Even though I live closer now, we still don’t see each other as much as we would like to.”
There were some sympathetic murmurs around the room.
“Also, ah, I do not want media digging into our private life, so please keep to yourself.”
“Of course, Roz. You can trust us,” Bood said immediately, while the rest of the team wholeheartedly agreed.
Ilya smiled in relief. He really liked the Ottawa Centaurs.

Chapter 4: A Hayden & Jackie Interlude
Chapter Notes
so this is NOT what I was planning on publishing for chapter 4, but someone left a comment on the last chapter that I couldn't stop thinking about so I spent the last 3 days writing a bonus chapter inspired by it instead of editing the real chapter 4 💀 (I don't want to spoil the chapter, so the comment is in the end notes!)
anyway, hope you all enjoy this even though it wasn't part of the original fic! timeline wise, this happens before chapter 3! (and yes the chapter count went up because of this)
Hayden laid back against the pillows, flipping through the channels of the hotel tv without really knowing what he was looking for. Arthur was really into sea animals lately, maybe he could find some sort of sea documentary so he would have some knowledge to share with him when he got back.
Next to him, Shane was digging around in his bag, pulling out his laptop before diving back in to look for something else. Hayden looked over, just as Shane triumphantly pulled out a laptop charger.
“You aren’t going to unpack your clothes?” he frowned, watching as Shane settled into his bed with his laptop, glasses on and everything.
“Um, no, I’ll do it later,” Shane replied absently, already engrossed in whatever was so interesting on his screen.
Years of being Shane’s roommate on roadies, he’d borne witness to all of Shane Hollander’s quirks, habits and routines.
One of those routines involved Shane unpacking his clothes and hanging them in the cupboards as soon as they checked into their hotel rooms without fail. Hayden had asked him about it once and Shane had shrugged, saying he didn’t want his things to stay rumpled in his bag. Hayden had nodded like he understood, when in reality he didn’t see any use in unpacking his bag when he was just going to have to pack it again the next day, but he didn’t question it further. Just quietly accepted it as another one of Shane’s habits.
But today was the third time on this road trip that Shane hadn’t unpacked his clothes as soon as they’d arrived and it was starting to make him feel a little uneasy.
He’d brushed it off the first two times – Shane could be intense and focused on other things so it wasn’t too alarming – but a third time in a row was too weird to ignore.

Shane finally came out of the bathroom and in an attempt at being A Good Friend, Hayden managed to ask, “How’s Rozanov?” without grimacing.
“He’s good,” Shane replied, happily. “He’s at my parents' place doing a puzzle with my dad and just wanted to say goodnight.”
That was… surprisingly sweet and didn’t quite fit in with the image of Rozanov that Hayden had always had.
“Oh, wow. That’s, uh, unexpected,” Hayden said, unable to mask the surprise in his voice.
Shane gave him a look. “I told you, sure he’s an asshole, but he’s also really sweet, and thoughtful and—”
“Okay, okay,” Hayden interrupted before Shane could keep waxing poetry about Rozanov. “I still don’t get what you see in him, but I’m starting to see he’s not quite the person I thought he was.”
Shane just gave him another look before climbing back into his bed, glasses back on and his eyes once again laser focused on his laptop.
Instead of turning back to the deep sea documentary he’d been watching, Hayden glanced over at Shane, unsure how he was going to broach the subject of Shane moving to Ottawa. He briefly considered just leaving it and waiting till they got back to Montreal so that Jackie could ask Shane instead.
But then he thought of how disappointed Jackie would be in him and besides, Shane still hadn’t unpacked and they’d been here for a full 3 hours now.
So he steeled himself, before asking in his most casual voice, “So, uh, do you want me to unpack for you?” Hayden winced as soon as the words came out of his mouth. It wasn’t what he’d been planning to say, but it was too late to take it back.
“What?” Shane looked up, a horrified expression on his face. Yeah it was definitely the wrong thing to say. “No! What the hell, Hayden? You know I don’t like you touching my stuff. What’s gotten into you?”
What’s gotten into him?! Hayden let the comment slide, even though Shane was the one being weird.
Hayden raised his hands in surrender. “Sorry, sorry. It’s just you’ve been like, glued to your laptop this whole trip. What’s so interesting on there anyway?”
There, take that Jackie! He’d done it, he’d asked Shane.
Shane suddenly looked shifty. “Oh, um. Just house stuff. Real estate things,” Shane said with the air of someone who was Hiding Something.
Oh god, Hayden was right. Shane was looking at houses in Ottawa to move into with Ilya Rozanov. Maybe Rozanov’s current place wasn’t up to Shane’s standards? Shane loved nice architecture after all. It was all making sense.
“Please don’t move to Ottawa,” Hayden blurted out before he could stop himself.
Shane looked up in confusion. “What?”
“Don’t move to Ottawa! I know you’re like all in love and shit with Rozanov and he moved there for you but like it’s only a two hour drive and you guys like playing against each other right? It’s gross but I know it’s some weird forepl—”
Shane yelped at that, interrupting his, admittedly, unhinged rambling. “Hayden, what the fuck?! I’m not moving to Ottawa!”
“You’ve been looking at ‘Moving to Ottawa’ guides! Why would you be doing that if you’re not moving to Ottawa?!” Hayden cried out, sounding a little hysterical now.
“You snooped?!”
“No! Yes… I didn’t mean to! It was right there on the screen! I just happened to walk past!”
“Jesus Christ Hayden, I’m not moving to Ottawa.”
“Then why are you looking at a ‘moving to Ottawa’ guide?!”
Shane ran a hand down his face, before he looked over at Hayden with a resigned expression. “I wasn’t looking at a ‘moving to Ottawa’ guide, I’m, uh, writing one.”
Hayden blinked at him in confusion. “You’re what?”
“I’m writing an Ottawa guide,” Shane repeated and hearing it a second time did nothing to clear up anything at all.
“What the fuck? Why?” Hayden asked, completely baffled. “Oh, is it for Rozanov? You’re wasting your time if it is, he’ll just laugh at you.”
“He did laugh at me,” Shane grumbled. “But no, it’s not for him. It’s uh… for the new centaur WAGs.”
Hayden gave him an incredulous look. This conversation was getting more confusing by the minute. “Shane, buddy. I don’t know what the fuck you’re talking about. Why the hell are you making welcome guides for the centaur's WAGs? Jackie doesn’t even do that, and besides isn’t that a job for whoever’s the head WAG?”
Shane, for some reason, blushed. “Well… funny you say that.”

RM/TLG notes:
- The ESPN docu is part of canon. I almost cut the opening conversation about it since it felt a little out of place in this "Troy Barrett" chapter but I liked it enough for it to stay 🤷🏻♀️
- in canon Harris and Troy drive around taffy lane, but in this fic they do a bit of walking too so i could have Maya & the boys spot them
- Troy does not ask Ilya for Shane's number in canon but we do have this line: "Maybe he should ask Ilya for Shane Hollander’s number. Shane was a fucking babe." (RM Ch5). Ilya still comes out to Troy as bisexual after they visit the Kingfisher but because of 'Jane' he doesn't quite connect the dots. So instead, Troy actually does ask for Shane's number 😂

“Shane. Is christmas. Please pay attention to your boyfriend and not your phone!” Ilya whined from his spot next to Shane. They’d spent most of the day with Shane’s parents, eating till they were bursting and enjoying each other’s company, but they were home now and all Ilya wanted to do now was cuddle with Shane on the couch.
Shane looked up from his phone, snorting at the pout on Ilya’s face. “Sorry, it’s just the wags chat. I was telling them I won’t be able to go to the party tomorrow. Don’t worry I said you’ll probably be able to go, it’s only a couple of hours right? I’ll just wait here.”
The pout melted off Ilya’s face as Shane’s words sunk in. Most of the time, Ilya didn’t even go to the team’s social events. It wasn’t that he didn’t want to, it was that he wanted to spend the extra time with Shane more, and usually that meant driving to Montreal or Shane driving to Ottawa and hiding out in their house. Luckily, the team never gave him grief over it, all of them well aware of “Jane” and how hard a serious long distance relationship was. It didn’t mean that Ilya didn’t ache to be able to bring Shane to team events, like how everyone else was able to bring their wives and girlfriends.
“What if you come to the party?” Ilya blurted out without thinking, unable to ignore the ache of want in his chest.
Shane’s head snapped up from where he had been tapping out a message on his phone, his eyes wide with surprise. “What? You want me to go to the party? As Jane?” he asked incredulously.
Ilya shook his head. “No. I know you are not ready for that yet. But what if you go as Shane Hollander, my best friend?”
When Shane didn’t do anything but stare blankly at Ilya, he continued, careful to keep his tone reassuring so Shane wouldn’t freak out. “Team knows we are friends. They know your parents live in Ottawa, so is not weird that you’re here. WAGs also know we are friends, yes? Is not so weird to invite you, a hockey player who is my friend, to come to party with other hockey players.” He ended with a shrug, trying to be casual about this and not be totally transparent about how much he wanted Shane to say yes.
He held his breath as he watched Shane process everything he’d said. Finally, Shane said, “You’re right, it wouldn’t be too weird, right? Are you sure?”
Still careful not to get his hopes up, Ilya nodded.
“Okay, I guess I can come.”
Ilya blinked in shock, not quite believing that Shane had actually agreed. “Really? You sure, sweetheart? If you are not comfortable going, it’s ok.”
Shane shook his head, a look of determination on his face now. “No, I’ll go. I mean… it might be good in the long run, right? Soft launch our relationship by getting them used to us being friends first?”
Puzzled, Ilya asked, “soft launch?”
“Oh, it means like… a slow reveal? Kind of like putting out hints but not outright announcing something,” Shane explained. “Maya’s been teaching me more internet words.”
“Ah, yes I remember now I have seen this word on social media. I understand. So, team sees we are best bro’s and when we announce we are lovers they will say, ‘wow best bro’s to lovers very romantic’,” Ilya said, nodding sagely.
Shane smacked him lightly on the chest. “Oh my god we are not going to use the word ‘lovers’!”
“Why not? Is true, yes?” said Ilya, grinning at Shane’s disgust.
“Shut up,” Shane said, but there was no bite to it with the way he was grinning back at Ilya.
Ilya let the grin fade off his face as he said to Shane earnestly, “Thank you, for agreeing to come.”
Shane gave him a soft look. “Of course, I know this is important to you. One day we’ll be able to tell them the truth, but I’m happy to take small steps in the meantime.”
Overwhelmed with gratitude and love for the man in front of him, Ilya leaned in, intent on showing Shane with his mouth just how grateful he was, when a horrified look took over Shane’s face.
“What is it?” Ilya asked worriedly, pulling back a little.
Shane groaned. “Fuck you, I’m going to have to face Troy Barrett.”
Ilya burst out laughing, and didn’t stop, even when Shane pushed him off the couch, sending him sprawling onto the floor.

TLG notes:
- Ok so something I haven't addressed outright in this fic is Ilya's depression. For a lot of reasons, I'm not going to explore it in this fic, but it is still there in the background. Like in canon, he still starts seeing Galina (his therapist) but in this universe I do imagine he tells Shane about it much sooner. I like to think they're communicating better and that Ilya tells Shane about therapy around the time that they meet up to watch the ESPN docu
- In canon, they argue a lot during Christmas & they have the huge fight when Ilya says he wants Shane to attend Bood's boxing day bbq. In this fic they obviously have a much nicer Christmas, and because they're communicating better, Shane is much more receptive to the party invitation :)

Maya sent Ilya an apologetic but amused look as she finally herded her boys out of the house. They’d been the last of the team to leave, staying to help clean up after the baby shower despite Shane’s insistence that he and Ilya could finish up. He suspected the kids had just wanted to make a good impression on Shane, and really who could blame them?
He went back into the living room, fully expecting to find Shane recleaning spots that he probably thought that the rookies had “missed”, but was surprised to instead find him sitting on the couch, a vacant expression on his face.
“Shane?”
All he got was a hum in response, which was slightly worrying. He walked over to Shane, taking his hand as he sat next to him.
“Baby shower was good, yes? Everything went exactly like you had on clipboard,” Ilya said cheerfully, trying to gauge if Shane was just tired and overwhelmed from the big day they’d had or if there was genuinely something bothering him.
“Yeah,” Shane replied, his tone a little too flat for Ilya’s liking.
He waited, but Shane didn’t look like he was going to say anything more, so he continued cautiously. “Everyone was impressed with the party you planned. Cassie and Bood kept telling me that Jane is so great,” he said, thinking that it would make Shane smile, but instead, to his alarm, Shane just turned his head so that Ilya couldn’t see his face. But not before he’d seen the way Shane’s eyes had gone slightly glassy.
Ilya scooched forward, trying not to panic, before gently bringing a hand to Shane’s cheek to turn his face back towards him. Thankfully, he didn’t resist but he kept his gaze down, avoiding Ilya’s worried eyes. “Sweetheart? What’s wrong? Did someone say something to upset you? Just tell me who, and I will stomp on them.”
“No, no one said anything. It’s so dumb. You’re right, the baby shower was great,” Shane sniffled. “I just… I guess I wish I could take credit for it as myself, and as your boyfriend. Not as Jane.”
Oh.
“Sorry, we had such a good day and now I’m ruining it. I think the fake identity is getting to me a little. Forget I said anything,” Shane continued, making something in Ilya’s chest clench at how sad he sounded.
As much as he hated seeing Shane upset over this, a small part of him was relieved that he wasn’t completely alone in feeling like he was slowly being crushed under the weight of their secrets.
He’d been surprised, but elated, when Shane had insisted on hosting a baby shower for Cassie and Bood, (“because as Head WAG it’s my job Ilya!”). Of course he’d been, it was another opportunity for them to be around each other, even if it were only as “friends”. When he’d first joined the Centaurs, he’d been downright ecstatic that Shane had suggested he could be semi-honest about their relationship under the “Jane” guise.
But as the years passed, the desire to be able to be together in some way outside of the confines of their home, had grown so much that it terrified him. He wanted to be able to have Shane and his team, his friends, in one place. It felt like a dream for the future, yet Shane had surprised him again when he’d agreed to attend Bood’s Christmas barbeque, and again when he’d planned this baby shower without any prompting from him.
He knew that this new happy medium they’d settled on wouldn’t be enough forever, but he hadn’t expected this reaction from Shane. For years, Shane had been content and happy with their arrangement and Ilya had found it amusing how seriously he had taken the Head WAG role he’d fallen into. Maybe it was one thing for Shane to lie to the WAG’s over text, but it probably felt like more of a betrayal now that he had met them all in person.
“Come here. You did not ruin anything,” Ilya said, pulling Shane into his arms. “We both know you’re not ready for them to know the whole truth yet.”
As much as Ilya wanted for the opposite to be true, he knew better than to push.
“I want to be,” Shane confessed softly into Ilya’s neck where his head was buried.
He squeezed Shane tighter. “I know, sweetheart.”
“I’m sorry. I know you’d rather just tell your team the whole truth.”
“Shhh, no sorries. I’m happy with how things are right now.”
Shane finally pulled back at that to look at him, his brows furrowed adorably in concern. “Really? It’s okay if you’re not, you can tell me.”
“How can I not be happy?” Ilya replied as sincere as he could, trying to show Shane how much he really meant it. “We are spending time together that isn’t just at our homes now that my team really believe we’re friends. I know we’re still hiding, but we are slow launching, yes?”
Shane smiled softly at that. “It’s soft launch, but slow launch works too.”
Ilya smiled back helplessly. “So do not worry about me. I promise I’ll tell you if it’s too slow, okay?”
Shane silently searched his face for a moment, but seemed to decide that Ilya really meant it. “Okay. Okay yeah. And I’ll tell you if we can um launch faster, I guess?” He looked a little sick at the thought but Ilya wasn’t too worried.
“Yes. Deal.” He smacked a playful kiss on Shane’s cheek to seal the deal, enjoying the way it made Shane roll his eyes fondly. “Wow, we are doing great at this communicating thing.”
Shane laughed at that. “We are though. I’m proud of us,” he replied, kissing Ilya’s cheek in return before he cast a longing glance over to the kitchen countertops.
Ilya wondered how long he could distract Shane from cleaning. “You really did do good job today,” he said casually. “But I cannot believe you let everyone see you with your sexy glasses. Then you torture me by adding a clipboard! Everyone is lucky they don’t know the truth about us otherwise I might not have been able to control myself.”
Shane shoved him weakly, even as his cheeks reddened. “Oh my god, shut up. By the way they heard you calling me ‘Mr Serious Event Manager’!”
“What? I was behaving! I didn’t even include the word ‘sexy’,” Ilya replied indignantly, before slyly adding, “you were behaved too, you didn’t even torture the rookies this time.”
The expression on Shane’s face could almost be a pout. “You said I wasn’t allowed to ask them any questions about my guide! I was just following your rule,” Shane said, before grumbling under his breath, “dumb rule though.”
“Yes, we both know you are the best at following rules,” Ilya said, smirking a little at Shane getting even redder at the praise. “You traumatized them at Bood’s barbeque. They are still recovering.”
“Ugh, whatever, maybe you’re right. Maya did mention in the group chat that they were relieved I didn’t question them today,” Shane said a little sulkily, while his eyes flickered over to the kitchen counter for the fourth time.
Ilya groaned dramatically. “Oh my god, go. I know you want to clean the counter even though you watched Luca clean it already.”
Shane immediately got up without hesitation before practically sprinting to the kitchen, and Ilya didn’t even bother to stifle his laugh. “He didn’t use enough of the spray!”
Ilya smiled, and followed after his boyfriend, already plotting how he could convince Shane to get out his clipboard and glasses. For cleaning to-do list purposes. Obviously.

- I've been sticking pretty closely to the canon timeline, but this is the one chapter we're doing a bit of hand-waving because technically there's no time for this baby shower between the Boxing Day BBQ and other January events. Everything has just been shifted back a little. Tbh I almost cut this entire chapter because it bothered me that it didn't fit properly in canon timeline but then I realized this is my fanfic and I can do whatever I want with the timeline 😂

- Finally we reached the "plane incident", which is pretty much the same as canon.
- JJ thinking Shane has an unrequited crush on Ilya is canon, but I slightly changed his reaction into trying to help Shane ask Ilya out instead. Of course Shane couldn't stand the thought of JJ thinking he needed HELP winning Ilya over, so he ends up blurting out the truth 😂 Let the man brag about his bf.
- They're engaged! The proposal also mostly follows what happened in canon. This particular part of their conversation in TLG ch. 25, I think goes nicely with the Shane of my fic wanting to set a specific timeline for telling the cens about them. (if they stick to this summer plan... well we'll see!)“I was thinking summer,” Shane said.

I've had this one done for about a week but then couldn't stop editing/rewriting/adding bits, so I figured I need to just publish it to finally move on 😅 but anyway hope you all enjoy 🫶🏻
Ilya stared at his open conversation with Shane, hardly daring to believe that he’d actually typed and sent the words “i want to tell my team i am bisexual”.
When they’d gotten engaged, Shane had told him he should tell people he was bisexual if he wanted to. At the time, the high of getting engaged had made it easy for Ilya to say he could wait until summer before their wedding, to tell the team about himself and about Shane, just before they told the rest of the world. It was fine, what was a few more months of hiding his sexuality when they’d been hiding their relationship for years?
They had a plan. A plan they were both happy with.
At least that’s what he’d thought.
But now, after watching Troy come out and seeing how much lighter he’d become, something in him ached to have that as well, to share a part of him that he’d hidden for so long. He tried not to think too much about how Troy and Harris could be openly affectionate around the team now, and how wide they smiled even when they were being chirped. The desire to have that was a different kind of longing he didn’t want to poke at too much.
Ilya wasn’t surprised when, instead of receiving a text back, his phone started ringing with an incoming request for a facetime call from Shane. He swiped to answer, and despite how weird he was feeling, he was unable to help the small smile as soon as Shane’s face filled his screen.
“Hi,” Ilya said, feeling uncharacteristically shy all of a sudden. An unwanted side-effect of vulnerability apparently.
“Are you okay?” Shane asked instantly.
“Uh, yes. Probably. Maybe not.” Ilya shrugged, feeling a little bad for worrying Shane. There was an adorable furrow in his brow and it stupidly made Ilya want to cry.
“Hey, talk to me. What’s wrong?”
Ilya sighed. “Nothing is wrong. Not really. Troy and Harris have been getting a lot of support since the pride night game and I am… very happy for them of course,” Ilya said, then hesitated, thinking carefully about how to voice what he was feeling in tandem with that happiness. Turns out he didn’t need to, because he could tell from Shane’s face that he understood immediately.
“Oh, Ilya.”
“I know it would be different for us. If we came out,” he said quickly. “But, I am maybe feeling… a little jealous.”
It was a little relieving to be able to voice what he’d been feeling, but unfortunately it didn’t make him feel that much better.
“It must be a huge weight off Troy’s shoulders huh?”
Ilya nodded. “He smiles more now. Very noticeable because he never used to smile at all.”
The corner of Shane’s mouth quirked up slightly in amusement at that. “It’s not just you, you know. Seeing Troy’s post and seeing all the support the wag’s had for him and Harris… I guess I didn’t want to admit that I’m jealous that they get to have that. But I am. Jealous, I mean,” Shane admitted sadly.
He softened at Shane’s confession, suddenly felt awful that he hadn’t even thought of how Shane also had a front row seat to all of this through the wag chat. “Okay, so we both admit that we are both jealous of Troy and Harris.”
Shane shrugged. There was a faraway look in his eyes that made Ilya both nervous and horny because it meant Shane was in Planning Mode. “Yeah, I guess so. Okay, so I think we should amend our plan.”
And there it was.
“What? What do you mean? I don’t think–” Ilya started saying, feeling slightly alarmed at the determined look on Shane’s face.
But Shane seemed to be on a roll. It was like Ilya hadn’t spoken at all. “So when you come out to your team–”
“You are okay with that?” Ilya interrupted, trying not to sound too desperately hopeful.
Shane gave him an incredulous look. “Yeah? Of course. You should come out to them if you want to.”
“Yes, I want to.”
Shane nodded. “Okay, so you come out to them and then I think you should also tell them Jane is a guy.” Ilya’s jaw dropped, but Shane wasn’t done. “I think don’t tell them my real identity just yet, but maybe at the next social event I come to we should come clean.”
Ilya almost choked in shock at the unexpected turn this conversation had taken. “What? Shane, what the fuck?
“I think it’ll be good to ease the bandaid off!”
“This feels a lot more like ripping not easing!”
Shane huffed. “Okay fine, we’ve been easing this bandaid off for three years now, maybe it’s time we rip the rest off.”
“Shane.”
“Ilya.”
They stared at one another through the screen, until Ilya had to look away and sigh. There was a little bit of guilt churning around in his stomach, even though he knew Shane would not have suggested this plan if he wasn’t okay with it. Even still though.
“You don’t have to do this for me,” Ilya said quietly, wanting to make his point absolutely clear. “I want you to feel completely ready when we tell them who you really are. I can tell them I’m bi without the whole truth.”
Ilya watched as Shane chewed at his lip while he took a moment to respond. He was grateful that Shane wasn’t just jumping at reassurances, because Ilya really needed him to be sure. “No, I know. But this isn’t just for you. It’s for me too, I promise. I’m so tired of hiding in front of people who are our friends. Telling them in the summer was a nice thought but like that’s still months away and there’s only so many excuses we can give them about why you’re bringing Shane Hollander to every event, right?”
Ilya thought this conversation was feeling more and more like a fever dream. “You want to come to all the events?”
“Yeah. Well, the ones I can make it to anyway.”
Ilya grinned. “You like them!”
Shane rolled his eyes, but he was smiling. “Shut up, of course I like them.”
“I’m glad. They like you very much too,” Ilya said sincerely.
Shane’s smile slid off his face. “What if… what if the wags get mad or hurt that I lied to them for so long though? I’ve been a little anxious about that,” Shane confessed, worry lining every inch of his face. “I’ve been lying to them for years.”
The confession hit Ilya like a brick and he felt silly that he hadn’t considered it before. Of course Shane would be worried about how the wags would react to who he was. He’d formed real friendships with all of them and Ilya could appreciate how frightening it would be to come out and say that they’ve unknowingly been talking to Shane Hollander all along.
“Shane. We have been lying to them for years, and I don’t think they will be mad at you for not being ready to come out to them. Coming out, it’s a big thing, yes?” Ilya waited until Shane nodded before he continued. “They might be shocked at first but I think it will be okay. They love you as Jane, I think they will love you as Shane as well. Okay?”
Shane swallowed hard, before he met Ilya’s gaze through the screen. “Okay. Then let’s do it. Let’s tell them who I am at your next team event.”
Shane smiled shyly at him through the screen, while Ilya was positively beaming back, reeling at how the conversation had turned out. He had maybe expected Shane to be supportive of his decision to come out to the team, but he hadn’t expected this.
He couldn’t wait to see the team’s faces.

i feel very relieved not to be hiding that part of myself anymore

TLG/RM notes:
- In canon we see Ilya jealous of Troy being able to come out and be open with Harris and the consequence of that in this universe is that he actually comes out to the team hooray. In canon they are of course still hiding :(
- Has Troy really figured it out? LOL maybe. I've put a note in a previous chapter that he doesn't make the connection because he had no reason to think Jane wasn't actually a girl. But now that he knows that Jane's a man? Well, he's definitely having some uncomfortable flashbacks to the night he tried to hit on Shane and things are maybe clicking into place 😂I am very excited to share the next chapter but the bad news is that it's only about half done and I am a snail writer 🥲 double bad news, I am going on holiday overseas very soon (I'm going to a wedding in New Zealand!) so it might be another month until I can get the next chapter up unfortunately!!
