Rue de Rivoli Arcade
Summary
They are both facing the doors when they open, holding their suitcases like respectable people, looking only moderately flustered. Kowalski holds the elevator door politely for the woman waiting with a stroller. They do not sprint to Cooper’s door. There is no fumbling with keys. They are as calm and dignified as Don Lockwood at a premiere.
They both stop trying to fake indifference as soon as the door shuts.

Chapter 1: A Blot in Every Way
Cooper falls on him as soon as the elevator doors are closed. If Cooper hadn’t beaten him to it, Kowalski would have done the same. He gives in to being the pursued instead. His return kiss is open and yielding. Kowalski seldom gets to be the one surrendering. It’s delicious. Cooper is lanky, close to Kowalski’s height, but leaner and softer, except right against Kowalski’s thigh.
(Cooper dresses left. Kowalski logs this information for future reference.)
Kowalski fills one palm with the curve of Cooper’s ass. He has a great ass, like he rides a bike sometimes? Cooper is kissing him aggressively, one hand in Kowalski’s hair, which leaves Kowalski free to haul him closer. He reflects that yielding isn’t everything, and goes to work below Cooper’s neck. He finds Cooper’s nipple through his shirt and tweaks it. Cooper moans into his mouth. The elevator dings.
“Kitchen’s there,” Cooper drops his suitcase, “bathroom’s that way.” They throw themselves at each other.
Kowalski’s arms are full of Cooper, which he wants to encourage, but – “Should you take your meds?”
“Yeah,” Cooper pants. “Right back.” He ducks into the bathroom for a second, runs the water briefly, and falls back onto Kowalski when he returns. Kowalski hauls Cooper upward by the thighs. Cooper wraps his legs around Kowalski’s waist, and uses the extra height to take Kowalski’s mouth.
With his mouth partway full of Cooper’s tongue, Kowalski asks “bedroom?” or something like it. Cooper answers with a head motion. Kowalski shuffles in the indicated direction, hoping he’s not at risk of smacking anything unfortunate on a doorframe. The bed is king-sized, extra-long, and placed up against a brick wall that Kowalski hopes is as structural as it looks. He has a history with drywall that he would prefer not to repeat. Kowalski toes his shoes off and lifts one knee onto the bed, then the other. His plans to show off what hours of core strengthening have done is thwarted by Cooper sliding off his lap.
Cooper keeps a firm grip on his shoulders. “I was thinking we should have a conversation, and maybe a shower.” He kisses Kowalski again, just as hot and hungry as the kiss in the elevator.
“Mmmph,” This is about the best he can manage at the moment. Julie Jordan and Billie Bigelow sang an eight-minute duet at this point in their relationship (was it all singing, Kowalski wonders, or was there a dream ballet in there?), but they’re fictional people who had dream ballets instead of making out. “Shower first or conversation first?”
Cooper appears to be in slightly better possession of higher brain functions. “I want the shower to be with you, so conversation first.”
“Okay.” Kowalski rolls off his knees and tries to catch his breath. This is a bedroom, which doesn’t help.
Cooper takes his hand, as if he understands that the bedroomness of it all is very distracting. “Let’s try this somewhere else.
Cooper leads him to the living room and puts him on the couch. Kowalski composes himself, trying not to think of the painful conversation he once had with a lead baritone. Cooper doesn’t sit down, which isn’t a great sign.
Cooper takes a deep breath. “You can’t take care of me if we fuck.”
“Okay?” Kowalski is thoroughly confused, but he tries to muster his best Garrett Graham for follow-up questions. “Are there, I don’t know, specifics on that?”
Cooper pulls his own hair. “You have been taking care of me for the last two days, and I really appreciate it. You were great. I needed it.” He steps closer to Kowalski. “But if I feel like an abandoned puppy while I’m fucking you, we will fuck exactly once and then we will never speak again. Capisce?”
“That sounds disappointing.”
“Does it?”
Garrett Graham is clearly not what’s needed here – Kowalski would happily take him out back and shoot him. Fortunately, Garett isn’t real. A homicide would be an interruption in the afternoon he would prefer to be having, Kowalski spreads his arms across the back of the couch and leans into them. “I was hoping for some time with the horny bastard who shoved me into a bathroom stall.”
Cooper steps closer – he’s standing between Kowalski’s knees now. “That asshole didn’t even get your name.”
“Yeah,” Kowalski drawls, “but he was really hot. Pretty sure he would have had his hand down my pants in another minute.”
“If you’re into that,” Cooper tries to sneer. He makes it look difficult. Kowalski wraps a leg around the back of one of Cooper’s knees to pull the man into his lap.
“How do you want to play this? You want to be in charge, or you just want to work me over and I’ll do the same to you?”
Cooper has a fistful of Kowalski’s hair. “I’m working you over. Anything I should avoid?”
“I can’t think of anything.”
Cooper tightens his hand, pulls Kowalski’s head back. “That’s because you can’t think right now.” He angles his head towards Kowalski’s mouth. “Let me know.”
Kowalski is having a great time. He has his hands full of Cooper’s hair, and Cooper is…
“Cannot believe you let some thug give you this tacky-ass bruise, like he was planting a goddamn flag and claiming Cuba in the name of Spain…”
“You gonna give me a better one?” Kowalski taunts.
Cooper twists his head against Kowalski’s grip to glare up at him. “Low bar.”
Kowalski works his hips against Cooper’s midsection. “You ever shut that wicked mouth?”
“Make me.” Cooper turns back to nipping at Kowalski’s chest.
“Could gag you with my cock,” Kowalski offers.
Cooper stops teasing and sinks his teeth in. The sensation bolts from warm and wet to sharp and bright. Kowalski can sort of hear himself. Distantly. He’s not as verbal as Cooper, but he is noisy. He’s lost his grip on Cooper’s hair, and he’s bucking against Cooper’s stomach in a way he knows can’t be comfortable, but it still takes him a while to stop.
“Your neighbors,” he gasps, “are going to hate me.”
“Je m’en fous.”
“Is that French?” Kowalski demands. “Is that fucking high school fucking French?” He puts his hands back where they were before Cooper bit him. “You are taking me the hell apart, and you’re still spitting out words in a second language? You know how hard this is?” Cooper wriggles strategically. “Yeah, you fucking know.” If he lets Cooper keep playing, the situation is going to pick up inescapable momentum very quickly. Instead, he shoves Cooper flat to the mattress and swallows his cock.
This does not shut Cooper up.
“Thought you’d be good at that,” Cooper spreads his legs wider apart. “Ooh, just like that with your tongue. Can you take me deeper, baby? Get me into your throat and get your fingers in my ass.”
Kowalski lets go for a moment. “Do you know how hard it is not to take care of you when you give instructions?”
Cooper gives him a friendly slap across the cheek. “Get back to work.”
“This is a lot like you being in charge,” Kowalski tells him.
Cooper’s eyes get a little wider. It’s probably genuine concern. It’s also very pretty. “Is that an issue?”
“Loving it,” Kowalski assures him. “Just telling you where we’re headed.”
Cooper’s eyes narrow. This is, in Kowalski’s opinion, also very pretty. “I’m game if you are. Anything I should know?”
“You’re not coming in my mouth yet,” Kowalski warns.
“Hell no.” Cooper fumbles a drawer open and hands him a bottle of lube. “I’m coming in your ass, after you beg me for it.”
Kowalski can’t help himself. “Yes, sir.”
“All the way to the back of your throat, babe. That’s right. I bet you’re beautiful on your knees, we’ll try that another time. Get moving on those fingers.”
Cooper’s ideas of aesthetically and politically acceptable places to leave marks include Kowalski’s right pec (two inches from the sternum at ten o’clock from his nipple), his left obliques a little up from the crest of his hipbone, and the inner thigh. Cooper gave him a pillowcase to bite, and then a bottle of water to rinse the teensy bits of cotton off his tongue.
“You okay?” Cooper has asked this several times.
“Yeah.” Kowalski has smiled at him dopily and said this as many times as Cooper has asked him. Kowalski can’t count right now.
“Didn’t realize I was putting you so far under.” Cooper only shuts up when his mouth is full, Kowalski knows now. And a little in the afterglow.
“Like it here.” Well, mostly. There are some worrying aspects. “We didn’t talk about you taking care of me.”
Cooper pets him. It seems to Kowalski like he’s taking care to avoid anything explicitly erogenous. It’s a laudable intention, but Kowalski might as well be a single erogenous nerve. “I’m good with this, babe. We’re even. I’ve got you.”
“You wanted to shower,” Kowalski reminds him.
“I can wait. Want you to be able to stand.”
“Might be a while.” Kowalski can’t think of anything lovelier than being allowed to kneel at Cooper’s feet in the shower.
“You’re never coming up while I’m touching you, are you?” Cooper smiles at him. Fond. Is fond good? Does fond get asked back to do this again? “I’m getting you more water and a protein bar.” Cooper gets up, which is sad. Kowalski steels himself to endure. He needs to be able to stand up under hot water, and ask if this experiment will be repeated.
Cooper grabs one of the towels they left on the floor earlier and kneels beside the bed. “I’m not asking you any questions right now,” he tells Kowalski. “But I really liked this, and I’d like to do it again sometime. We’ll talk about it later, okay?”
Kowalski nods. “I could really use the water.”
“Sorry about the lint.” He drops a quick kiss on Kowalski’s forehead. “God, you’re sexy though.”
Kowalski pokes at Cooper’s legs. Now that he knows he might get back here sometime, he’s starting to come out of subspace. “I’m suffering. Water.”
“Don’t try to stand up till I get back, okay? You were pretty far gone.”
“Hurry up,” Kowalski says, “or I’ll get it myself.”
Afterword
End Notes
This is (part of?) the spicy bits implied in Interesting Men, and belongs in between chapters 4 and 5. I'd have put it there, but it has a very different rating than the rest of that work. A lot of spicy time fits in that space, because the guys really need to sort out their dynamic at that point, and they clearly do that in a hurry (and then have to do it again, because of things that happen to them). Right now, though? Ilya Rozanov is on vacation in the woods of Ottowa, his time fully occupied and his cell service intermittent. LFG.
Content warnings: I have given Cooper and Kowalski the attitudes I think are realistic for people of their implied experience. By Ao3 standards, they're a little sloppy. They are light on negotiation, and not explicit about limits or safewords. I've tried to make consent as clear as possible, but some of that consent is in chapter 4 of Interesting Men, where Kowalski uses an old euphemism in response to an invitation. There's verbal teasing, mild degrading language, D/s dynamics, and reference to a makeshift gag.
The Garrett Graham referenced here is the one from The Deal by Elle Kennedy, which was published in 2015. One day, Cooper and Kowalski are going to have a conversation about the Jacksonville Rays, but those books are still three years in their future.
It appears I get unreasonably miffed when anyone describes Cooper and Kowalski's story as finished. There will be additional chapters here eventually, but it takes me SO LONG to write smut of any quality at all, and I cannot send my boys off into the world with smut of no quality. Forgive me for posting chapter 1 of ? and having no schedule.
