Nobody Knows (the trouble I've seen)
Summary
This whole season has been a complete whirlwind. The trade to Toronto. Meeting Scott and Ilya. And now, meeting Shane Hollander in his own home.
Notes
I love Ryan Price so much HE IS A BEAN
Thank you to the HRFL server for plot bunnies - IDK why this part was so hard but it has an IMPORTANT EVENT that needs to happen before the next part. Don't worry we return to our regularly scheduled Ilya Rozanov content next time.
Thank you Grace for teaching me how to spell, I owe you my life <3
Nobody Knows (the trouble I've seen)
[Canada is most gay]
Hockey Bear: hey, did you guys know about Hazy’s sister?
Old Man Scott: I could not have told you that he even had a sister.
Ilya: Hazy has doctor wife, I know nothing of his sister.
Hockey Bear: Oh shit ok maybe I shouldn’t say.
Old Man Scott: Generally a good instinct, but when you open the gay hockey player chat to talk about someone we’re probably coming to a singular conclusion.
Old Man Scott: But cool that he told you, though. I guess that means you told him?
Hockey Bear: Yeah, it was nice to tell a teammate who didn’t immediately pretend it didn’t happen.
Ilya: Who were these people do I need to fight them? Were they Boston people?
Hockey Bear: Ilya, chill. I was kinda over it by the time I got to be a Bear. Don’t worry about it.
Ilya: Is tragedy that you couldn’t not be a Bear for the Bears, I will write formal complaint to MLH.
Hockey Bear: Please don’t
Old Man Scott: Ilya the centaurs actually have a nice communications team, be nice to them.
Ilya: If Hazy stops being cool you tell us and I will come to Toronto and fight him.
Hockey Bear: He actually also offered to fight people for me. You guys do remember I mostly get ice time specifically to start fights, right?
Ilya: I need to fight someone. Jane has an asshole problem but he has told me I cannot fight anyone about it
Old Man Scott: Fuck, sorry about that man.
Hockey Bear: Maybe you can fight someone when we come to play in Ottawa. If you hit Kent I probably won’t hit you back even if asked.
Ilya: Yes, good. And I will take you for coffee also. Or tea. Do you have better coffee shop now?
Hockey Bear: We fly straight after the game. Maybe next time.
Ilya: Yes, you play Montreal day after. Say hello to Hollander for me. Don’t let him score, I am falling behind.
—
“Ilya, I can’t just go out for coffee with one of the Toronto players before a game. That’s insane.” Ilya could hear the clatter of the dishes that he was washing, and Ilya let himself relax at the sound of Shane in his home. It was nice to feel a little domestic like this, even when they were still apart.
“He knows that we are doing charity together. I am coming to join you in a week for the announcement, so is not so strange that you might say hello because we have talked. Is not like he has massive secret about his brain.”
“It’s still weird. He’s, like, famously shy around everyone. I’m amazed he even met with you.”
“We cornered him in off season, when his guard was down.”
“You know that’s kinda shitty, right? You shouldn’t ambush people.”
“We’re friends now, is fine.” Ilya grinned when he heard Shane sigh. Shane could never stay mad at him for long, especially during the parts of the season when they hadn’t seen each other for weeks, and that particular sigh was definitely one of fond exasperation rather than annoyance.
“I’ll offer it to him, but you’re not allowed to be mad if he says no.”
“Okay, okay. Now, are you done in kitchen because I have only thirty minutes before bus so we must be fast.”
—
“Ryan! Glad you could make it.”
“Hollander. Hi. You know, I’ve never been this popular until this year.”
“Hah, well. That’s what you get for being friends with Rozanov. He likes to smash people together like barbies to make them be friends.”
Shane gestured Ryan to come inside. He had ultimately decided against meeting an opposing teammate in a public place and so had invited Ryan to his apartment, but was still surprised when the answer had been yes.
“God, yeah. That is a bit how it feels. You know he added me to a group chat with him and Hunter? So I’m friends with Scott Hunter now as well I guess.”
“Trust me I am well aware of what that man is like when he’s made up his mind about something. Stubborn barely covers it.”
They both laughed, and Shane grabbed a couple of ginger ales out of the fridge before they both settled down on the couch. He handed one to Ryan who looked at it a little askance.
“You, uh. Got anything else?”
“Oh! Sorry. Force of habit, I guess. Uh... I have coffee?”
“I guess. Okay,” Ryan said, and Shane was not at all convinced.
“I mean, obviously there’s water. Or I think my mom left some weird tea here last time she visited.”
“What’s weird about tea?”
Shane got up and went to the cupboard. “There’s jasmine and, uh, Earl Grey. I think my mom bought the earl grey by accident because it’s not even open.”
“The jasmine, if you don’t mind.”
“Sure.” Shane stuck the bag and some water in a mug before shoving it in the microwave.
“Wow, okay, you’re really not a tea person,” Ryan said with a laugh, and Shane saw his shoulders relax.
“I used to have one of those boiling water faucets, and when it broke I never went to get a kettle because the coffee machine works fine.”
“And you say your mom drinks tea? I think you’re getting a kettle for Christmas.”
“Probably.” Shane pulled the mug out of the microwave and handed it over to Ryan, sitting down opposite him.
They sat in silence, each looking at their drinks. The awkward pause stretched.
“Uh, so. Ilya introduced you to Scott?”
“Yeah. I don’t know if you know his boyfriend at all? Kim or something?”
“Kip. And yeah, I know him through Scott.”
“Is there some, I dunno, captains network that you guys all have that means you’re friends?”
“Hah, not really. I wish. No, I think it’s just Rozanov.”
“Huh.”
They stared at their drinks again.
“So you’ve known Rozanov for a while then?” Ryan asked eventually.
“Yeah, a while,” Shane smiled to himself. “The MLH loves to shove us together at every chance and we can’t just glower at each other the whole time.”
“Has he ever had social boundaries?” Ryan asked, and Shane let out an ugly snort of laughter.
“Hah! He’s, like, the king of hiding his feelings, but he still manages to make them everyone else’s problem. Being an ass is his love language.”
“He must love you a whole bunch then,” Ryan said with a smile, and Shane fought to keep the besotted smile off his face.
“Nah, must be Scott. He’s a total ass to Scott most of all.”
“True. God, but now he’s, like, one of my closest friends. I nearly told him about Fabian the other day.”
“Fabian?” Shane asked. The name didn’t sound familiar, perhaps it was one of the Toronto rookies.
“Yeah he’s my, um. Well. I don’t know really.” Ryan started blushing, and Shane just cocked his head sideways in confusion.
“Are you training with him?” Shane asked, and Ryan’s face lit up with a blush.
“Oh, no. He’s, um. A friend. Doesn’t even like hockey. But we knew each other as kids. and now we’re both in Toronto and it’s nice.”
“Well, Rozanov is a pretty jealous guy, but he will be fine if you have other friends. Although, you probably don’t want him trying to add Fabian to his super secret society.”
“Wait, you know about the group chat?” Ryan asked, and Shane grinned.
“Oh my god does he actually have one? He joked about it enough times I’m glad he finally did. Oh my god, did he call it ‘People who are bad at hockey + Ilya’ or something like that?” Shane could only imagine the fun that Ilya was having with a group chat, especially if it gave him the opportunity to make fun of Scott.
“Uh, ‘Canada is most gay.’ actually.” Ryan said, and Shane sobered fast.
“Oh. That group chat. That’s the one you’re in. I, uh, he said he was gonna make one for the camp trainers he was wooing.” Shane tapped his nails on the side of his drink.
“Oh, uh. I thought maybe if you were friends with Roz that you…”
“He’s actually really great, would never share a secret that someone doesn’t want shared. So, uh, I didn’t know. Until now.”
“Oh! okay. But you knew about Roz, though?” Ryan asked.
“Oh yeah. And he said that he went to talk to Scott about it too, so I knew they were friends mostly for that. But um. Thanks. For telling me.”
“I told Roz and Hunter — I was never not out, not really. Assumption did a lot of heavy lifting.”
“Oh it so often does.” Shane said, tongue in cheek.
That was the thing about being lauded as the second coming of Gretzky — it didn’t leave any space in anyone’s mind for Shane to be anything other than Shane Hollander, Hockey God. Even in the days he fucked up , when he played badly and it felt like the whole world was against him.
Or even just his locker room.
“So, who is this Fabian guy then that you’re trying to keep away from Rozanov? I promise I won’t say anything to him.”
“Oh well, it’s complicated. He’s a guy that I knew from when I was a kid, my billet family when I was in the juniors, and I guess he was very nearly my first boyfriend. I moved away before anything happened, but now he’s in Toronto and he’s a singer and he’s just so… lovely.”
“Ryan, that’s cute as shit, you know that? Finding your first crush and then, what, developing a second, more serious crush?
“Oh my god when you say it like that it’s so embarrassing.”
“Hey, I’m probably gonna marry the person I’ve been sleeping with since I was seventeen I am in no place to say anything.”
Ryan looked visibly shocked.
“Hollzy, you kept that very quiet. That’s... who the hell is this girl? Where the hell have you been keeping her.”
Shane took a deep breath. This wouldn’t be like in the Voyageurs locker room. Ryan was gay. He liked a guy. It was going to be fine.
His hands still wouldn’t stop their tapping on his drink.
“Well, uh. Funny story. You know about Ilya’s Jane?”
Ryan’s brow furrowed in confusion. “I mean, I guess? I know she, well he, exists.”
“I also have… a Lily.”
Ryan’s face did a complicated series of moves that Shane couldn’t follow before he opened his mouth in a surprised gasp.
“Oh, shit. You have a boyfriend. Sine you were seventeen? Fuck me Hollander, you’re a madman. Also, how did you get out of being in Ilya’s oh my god it’s you, you’re Jane.” Shane saw the moment that it clicked for Ryan, mid-sentence, and he felt his breath start to go faster. He didn’t mean for Ryan to get that. He didn’t want Ryan to know that part. “But you, and he. What?”
“Nobody knows. Nobody. My team, I came out to my team this season but nobody knows about Rozanov. My parents. Our agent. Hayden and his wife. That’s it. And my coming out hasn’t left the locker room either.” ‘Nor will it, if the Voyageurs Administration get their way’, thought Shane bitterly.
“Okay. And, like, Scott doesn’t know?”
“Nope. Nor Kip, even though we text.”
“Wait, you text Kip? And he has no idea who you are?”
“No, he and I we, hah, wait. Look at this,” Shane moved to sit beside Ryan on the couch rather than opposite and opened up his phone.

[ADMIRALS WAHABAGs ⚓]
Laura 2: Who knows which of next week’s skates are optional I need to organise doctor appointments
Jane: All skates are mandatory if you want to improve your game.
Kip: Scott says only the Tuesday and Thursday for everyone, but he wants to run drills on the defence team on Wednesday so that’s not optional for Remo, sorry.
Kip: (Scott wants to be clear that he is not sorry this is Remo’s job)
Laura 2: Jane, I think you’re trying to moonlight as the captain.
Natya: you already fuck alternate you don’t need to seduce captain.
Kip: also you can’t have him he’s mine
Kip: oh and he’s gay so
Kip: like, famously gay. you may have noticed.
Jane: appreciate how that was a secondary concern for you
Jane: Also you don’t know how many captains I’ve fucked
—
Ryan laughed at the whole exchange.
“Holy shit, dude. So Kip knows you’re a guy but doesn’t know you’re Hollander. This chat apparently thinks you’re fucking Vaughan of all people, and you’re like… a totally different guy in this chat.”
“I don’t think I’m a different guy, just… one that isn’t hiding as much. Or rather, hiding so much about me that I can be myself without the sorta… hangover of being Shane Hollander. I mean, I’ve been doing media training since I was fourteen and started getting tagged as a prospect for the Canadian Juniors team. So just talking to people about hockey without all that pressure… it’s kinda nice.”
“I see that. I mean, I only have one purpose on the ice and it would be nice, even once, to just… play some hockey.”
“Well, now that you know, you’re aware of the risks of knocking me out on the ice. Ilya will definitely threaten you if anything happens, and I’m sorry. He doesn’t seem to realise that we play a contact sport.”
“You’re not the kind of guy they usually want me to fight. The crowd loves you too much to want to see you go against me.”
“But that’s more than enough hockey talk. We play in a couple of hours. No sharing anything. When’s your pre-game ice time?”
“Four - you?”
“We did optional skate first thing, before you guys landed. You guys winning against Boston had the whole team turn up. Aaaaand I’m talking about the game again. Fuck.”
Eventually the two of them found more to talk about — Shane was still deeply curious about Fabian, and both of them had similar hockey origin stories until they hit draft age, at which point it became very different, and with the announcement for the Irina foundation imminent, Shane shared a little more of the shape of what they were going to be doing.
Eventually it came time for Ryan to leave and both of them to start preparing for the game. As Ryan was on the way out, Shane stopped him by the door, before he could step out into the street for his car.
“Hey, uh. Don’t say anything. About me being Jane. I’m, uh, not really ready to let this go actually public.”
“Of course, man. I mean, not even Scott?”
“I think that’s more Ilya’s call than mine. I can’t decide if he’s worried that Scott will hate him if he finds out, or if he just likes knowing something that Scott doesn’t. And… our rivalry, our public rivalry is so much of how the world sees us that it’s actually nice to just be… Jane and Lily, who are long distance and love each other. I know he’s gonna find out eventually, not least because Kip is smart, but I think Ilya likes this.”
“So, uh. Should I tell him?” Ryan asks. clearly reluctant.
“Hah. I’ll text him just before I get on the ice so that it can torture him that he can’t ask follow-up questions the whole way through the game.”
“You know, it’s still weird, but you two are clearly meant for each other. God, you’d drive me up the wall.”
“Thanks. I think. Now go, I don’t want you to have any excuses when we roast you tonight.”
“See you on the ice.”
“See you on the ice.” And then, Ryan was gone.
—
Jane: Ryan is lovely.
Jane: We had a great time, thanks for the suggestion.
Jane: Oh, and he knows about Jane and Lily.
Ilya: What?
Ilya: What do you mean?
Ilya: Jane
Ilya: Jane
Ilya: Jane
Ilya: fuck you game is starting
Ilya: you told him?? you just met him
Ilya: what were you thinking?
Ilya: is he going to tell hunter?
Ilya: if he tells hunter I will murder him
Ilya: don’t care he could probably fold me in half
Ilya: I am scary russian I could do this
Ilya: he is too nice he would not kill me
Ilya: maybe
Ilya: wow that goal was so beautiful I want to fuck you even in your Voyageurs kit
Ilya: would it be wrong to fuck you while still wearing full gear?
Ilya: except cup, of course
Ilya: wait no i am still mad at you
Ilya: stop being sexy and come and answer me
Jane: Everything is fine. And no, you can’t fuck me in my gear. It’s expensive.
Ilya: I don’t know if you know but I am now most well paid member of whole league I am millionaire I think I can buy you a spare.
