when I'm in the glow of the warmth you throw
Summary
Scott has no real concept of what Kip’s magic might feel like, other than the absence of a stomach ache and winning hockey games.
"Well, this is a spell that makes it visible. It's for two people to take together and they can see each other's magic. Or we can both see mine, I guess."
"Are we sure Shawn's friend didn't just give you psychedelics?" Scott asks with a smile, holding one of the little candy hearts up into the light as if inspecting it more closely will give him any clues.

For the Skip Autumn Bingo prompt candy: Kip learns more about his gifts and shares it with Scott.
Notes
when I'm in the glow of the warmth you throw
Kip's abilities grow stronger day by day. They're not really what Scott expected when Elena said he was a healer. He's heard of healers before; they have one on the Admirals medical team to assist with injuries, just making recovery a bit faster and helping with pain levels when someone gets hurt.
But apparently there are different types of healing, and Kip's talents are more on the magical side of things. Protection from curses, for one thing, as they've seen. He can also help to heal any sort of afflication that was caused by magic, whether mental or physical. (Though Scott will attest to the fact that Kip kissing his bruises better is definitely helpful for any hockey-acquired injuries as well. But that might just be him.)
Scott also learns that there's a lot more magic in the world than he was aware of. Kip has a deeper knowledge already, with his friend Shawn having a knack for potions and Elena being a powerful witch since their teens, but he develops a whole new sense for it after manifesting his talents. He has to, because what happened with Scott's curse keeps happening all over again while he's still learning to control his gift.
It's in Kip's nature to empathize and help others. But when Maria's headache or Shawn's distress over the burst pipe in his apartment have any sort of magical background and Kip says as much as "feel better" or feels compassion, his powers will activate and try to fix it. (And yes, it counts as a magical cause if Shawn's latest attempt at a new potion turned out a little…corrosive, and that's what made the pipe burst in the first place.)
"Maybe you need to be less of a good person," Elena suggests one afternoon. They're at Scott's apartment, Elena helping to figure out where Kip's energy is draining to this time. They always have to find the destination first for Kip to be able to stop it. "Stop caring about other people so much."
Kip rolls his eyes; they all know Elena doesn't mean that. He sits very still while she investigates, fingers wrapped around Kip's wrists and her eyes closed in focus.
"Aha! It's Scott again."
"No," Scott groans. "What did I do this time?"
It happens more than he'd like. Which, on the one hand, shows him how much Kip cares. And Scott likes it a lot, being cared for. But he doesn't want it draining Kip's life force.
He thinks back on the last few days, trying to piece together what magical things might have inconvenienced him that Kip is protecting him from this time.
"Oh! Vaughny gave me that brownie his sister made this morning and it made my stomach really upset? But that went away…"
"After you told me about it," Kip finishes with a sigh. Carter's sister must have used a little magical help in the kitchen to make those brownies taste so good. Maybe Scott shouldn't have eaten three. "All right. I hope I don't give you retroactive food poisoning or something."
Kip takes a few deep breaths and then a shiver runs through him. It takes about two minutes for Scott to start feeling a little queasy again, his stomach making an unhappy gurgling sound. Yep. Definitely the brownies. But it feels like Kip already got him through the worst of it anyway.
"I need to figure this out," Kip says, making that adorable little pouty face he sometimes does. "I'd have been totally fine fixing a tummy ache if I wasn't also accidentally doing five other things all the time."
"It takes a while," Elena replies, matter-of-fact. "You're getting better every day. You can stop it reliably now, that's a huge step."
"Yeah, I know," Kip grumbles. “I’m just impatient.”
💛🍬✨
A few days later, Kip comes home from the Kingfisher beaming, presenting Scott with a small plastic box that holds…candy hearts?
"Thank you?" They're cute, but a little bit of sugar wouldn't get Kip quite this excited, so there must be more to it.
"Okay, so, these are from one of Shawn's friends, and before you ask, they're perfectly safe." Kip sits down on the couch next to Scott and greets him with a kiss before he continues. "You know how you said it would be cool if you could see my magic, kind of like Elena can?"
The truth is that Scott thinks about it a lot, actually. This new part of Kip that still feels hard to grasp. They’re still getting to know each other in many ways, after only three months together, and he wants to learn everything about Kip.
He gets glimpses into his beautiful brain when Kip tells him about all of the many things that interest him and Scott always listens with rapt attention, even if he sometimes doesn’t really know what Kip is talking about. He knows Kip’s body, and he also knows Kip’s heart, that much he is sure of. He listens to it beat when he puts his head on Kip’s chest at night and Kip plays with his hair and whispers sweet nothings to him.
But he has no real concept of what Kip’s magic might feel like, other than the absence of a stomach ache and winning hockey games.
"Because people see all sorts of things on those."
“No, it’s real,” Kip insists, and Scott kisses him again, soft and slow.
“I’m just kidding.” He brushes his thumb over Kip’s cheek, cupping his face. “I’d love to do this with you, more than you know. And I love that you want to share it with me.”
“Of course,” Kip says easily. As if it’s that easy to share the deepest parts of yourself with someone else. But Kip always knows how to make that kind of thing easy.
💛🍬✨
They’re both impatient to try the spell, but don’t want to rush and squeeze it into some one-hour gap in their schedule between Kip coming back from work and Scott leaving for a game. That Sunday afternoon, they’re finally in luck.
Kip has been out with his friends, the crisp outside air still clinging to him when he comes in, his nose cold against Scott’s cheek when he kisses him. A sunny morning is turning into a gloomy, overcast afternoon, and it feels like the perfect time to relax together. Scott makes them hot chocolates while Kip runs a bath and they soak in Scott’s giant tub together in sandalwood-scented luxury. Scott wraps them both up in thick, white towels when they get out, preserving the warmth and comfort of the bath as they sit on the bed, and Kip hands him one of the little candy hearts.
They take them at the same time and Scott kisses the sweet taste out of Kip’s mouth afterwards, already feeling a little heady with anticipation. Kip sighs against his lips, dreamy and languorous as he kisses Scott back.
“Do you see anything yet?” he asks and Scott shakes his head. But what would he see this close, except the rich brown of Kip’s eyes, the gentle warmth and affection he finds in their depth?
“Let me have a look,” Scott whispers, another kiss brushed against the corner of Kip’s mouth before he pulls back. He pushes the towel off Kip’s right shoulder first, tracing his lips over every inch of exposed skin, breathing in the scent of the bath oil still clinging to him, and then repeats the same on the left side.
“Are you really looking?” Kip sounds amused. He runs his fingers through Scott’s hair, keeping him close.
“Very thoroughly,” Scott assures him, kissing down his chest and over his left pectoral while he keeps slowly pulling on the towel. And that’s where he sees it: a soft glow right over Kip’s heart, warm orange light that looks like it’s shining right out of him.
“Kip.”
“Oh,” Kip breathes when he looks down at it. “That’s – wait.”
The light spreads, growing larger and stronger until it seems to cover all of Kip’s chest. Or, actually, Scott reminds himself – it’s just their ability to see it that grows as the spell takes effect. The magic itself is always there.
Scott helps Kip out of the towel completely, and they both watch the glow waft around him. It seems to have some sort of structure to it that becomes clearer with every passing moment, like adjusting the focus on a blurry picture.
“This is crazy,” Kip says quietly, running his fingers over his forearm, now also enveloped in light, moving and shaping itself from one large orb into individual tendrils. They wrap around him like thin threads of fabric, weaving together, moving, licking against the skin on his arms and torso.
“It’s so beautiful.” Scott stares at him, in awe. It’s gone dark outside while they were in the bath and he hasn’t turned the lights on yet, so it's only the glow from the strands of Kip’s magic illuminating the bedroom.
He feels almost shy when he reaches out to touch Kip again, reminding himself that it isn’t really any different than it was five minutes ago. The reaction is instant when he puts his hand on Kip’s shoulder, the glowing tendrils of light rearranging themselves and wrapping around his hand, all the way up his wrist.
“Look,” Kip whispers, watching his magic react to Scott. “It likes you.”
Scott inhales sharply, and for some reason he feels tears spring to his eyes. He quickly blinks them away. He’s speechless.
“Come here.” Kip wraps his arms around Scott’s shoulders, divesting him of his own towel as he pulls him close. “I want to see what happens.”
They stretch out on the bed, Scott’s head on Kip’s chest as he holds him, the threads of his magic swirling around them both, wrapping around Scott as if he’s part of Kip.
“It’s like it’s protecting you.”
“It’s incredible." Scott takes a shaky breath, feeling wet and heavy in his chest. This is Kip’s instinct, deep inside. His powers following his feelings, always ready to provide healing to the people Kip cares about.
Kip looks mesmerized, wiggling his fingers and watching the glowing strands of warm orange move. He turns to Scott, pressing his hand to his cheek, and Scott tilts his head up for Kip to kiss him.
It turns heated fast, and he pushes himself up so he can get on top of Kip, covering him with his body and pressing skin to skin, Kip’s magic swirling around them both. He kisses down Kip’s chest and belly, his heart feeling full enough to burst. Scott doesn’t have the right words to tell Kip just how extraordinary he thinks it is, how much he loves seeing a new part of him like this, so beautiful and real. But he hopes he can make Kip feel it.
Kip sighs softly, one hand cradling the back of Scott's head as he moves down his body. The light twists around Kip's hips and down his thighs, parting as Scott spreads Kip's legs with both hands.
"Huh," Kip says, watching Scott nuzzle into the crease of his thigh, nose pressed into the trimmed pubic hair that frames his half-hard cock. "No magic there."
"Baby." Scott mouths up the side of Kip's cock, feeling the shudder it produces, and looks up at him with a smile. "No magic needed."
Kip moans when Scott takes him into his mouth, drawing his knees up and stroking his fingers through Scott's hair. Even with his eyes closed, Scott can still see the glow of his magic filter through a little bit. He feels completely enveloped by it, Kip's thighs on each side of his head, and he takes him deep, lips tight.
Scott wishes he could feel the magic and not just see it; feel its threads brush over his skin soft as feathers, their glow a warm comfort like Kip's gentle touch after a long day. Maybe he should have known this would only make him covetous for more. He always wants more when it comes to Kip.
"So good," Kip whispers, a breathy moan slipping out as his body reacts, back arching, and the aborted little push upward of his hips telling Scott he's getting it just right. He gets lost in the taste of him, the smell of him, the familiar weight of Kip on his tongue.
Scott brings his arms up, hands wedged under Kip's body and cupping the globes of his ass. His fingers dig into supple flesh over muscle and he feels Kip flex his glutes, his legs starting to tremble.
Part of him wants to draw this out, to tease and lick and taste Kip until he can't take it anymore, but Scott isn't sure how long the spell will last, and he still wants to look. To hold Kip in his arms, to kiss him and touch his skin and watch the strands of magic move and play, as alive as the man they belong to.
Kip is breathing faster, his fingers tightening in Scott's hair, and Scott watches the tendrils of light spin and twist faster, their subtle glow sharpening into a bright orange. Kip doesn't see it, eyes squeezed shut and his lips parted as the pressure builds in his body. Scott sucks him hard, hands squeezing, and lets his fingers slip between his cheeks, gentle pressure against his rim.
That's what does it, and Kip gasps, hips thrusting up just once, spilling hot down Scott's throat.
Scott swallows with a moan of his own, licking every last stray drop clean off of Kip and then resting his cheek against the inside of his thigh, watching the light of Kip's magic settle down, dimming back into its regular color.
"Did you see?" he asks and Kip nods, wide-eyed.
He moves up to lie beside Kip again, gathering him into his arms, back to Scott's chest.
"Hey, let me –" Kip tries to twist around, get his hands on Scott, but Scott soothes him with a kiss to his temple.
"That's okay. Later. I just want…" He trails his fingers down Kip's arm, watching the strands of light swirl and meet his touch. "Just this?"
"Yeah, okay," Kip replies softly, settling back against Scott. They're pressed close, Scott's chin on Kip's shoulder and his hands all over him, watching Kip's magic sway and wrap around them both. It's still the most unbelievable thing Scott has ever seen, and he doesn't think he'll ever get his fill of it. Of Kip.
When the glow starts to dull, the threads growing fuzzy and dissolving back into nothing but a glowing sort of fog, they know the spell has almost run its course. Kip holds his hand out for Scott to lace their fingers together and they watch the light disappear altogether.
"That's part of you," Scott whispers, and Kip makes a thoughtful little sound. "All the time. Just – right there."
"It's pretty cool," Kip agrees.
"It's amazing. You're amazing."
"Maybe I'll be a little more patient with my magic," Kip says quietly. "It's just trying to help. It just – it knows how much I love you."
Scott hopes it knows how much he loves Kip, too.
💛🍬✨
Kip's patience lasts, and his control improves.
Just in time for Kyle to somehow be licked all over his face by someone's magical pet toad that he "might be slightly allergic to, just a little bit".
Scott picks them both up from the hospital that night, Kyle still looking a little green after being treated for what definitely would have been full-blown anaphylaxis if Kip hadn't been there, and Kip already mostly back on his feet after receiving a refreshing round of IV electrolytes.
"Never a dull moment, huh?" Scott asks, giving Kip a quick kiss when he's settled in the passenger seat.
Kyle just groans, curled up in the backseat, and presses his forehead to the cool glass of the window.
"I think I need to set some ground rules for the people in my life," Kip says. "We'll start with a two-brownie limit for you, and a strict no-toads policy for Kyle."
"You're acting like I brought this upon myself somehow. I didn't want that guy to lick me." Kyle shakes his head and mutters to himself, "Words that have literally never come out of my mouth before."
