The Ottawa Centaurs from 2016 to 2021 as told through the tweets of their resident beat reporter.

Notes

I read a lot of fics in both Hollanov and hrpf where the reporters in the room are a nebulous mysterious nameless being to ask shitty questions. And while I’m sure there are a lot of reporters that the players don’t know, some reporters stay with the team long enough to develop relationships with the players over the years, doing one on one interviews and being at every game. Sometimes it’s a good relationship (one of the caps reporters even got her own team nickname) and sometimes it’s bad (you can see it in Auston Matthews’s eyes every time the reporter he hates asks a stupid question) but either way, it’s a fascinating dynamic.

I’ve largely based my reporter, Casey (she/her), off of my two favorite Washington Capitals Beat Reporters, Bailey Johnson and Sammi Silber. If you’re looking to get into hockey for real and there’s a team that interests you, find their beat reporters online and follow them!! It’s a great way to understand the games and get good insights to the team. Following the beat reporters on Twitter is probably one of my favorite ways to engage with the game.

This fic contains major spoilers for all the rest of the books in the series, which I have read several times. If you’ve only watched the show, just be prepared for spoilers and maybe some references that won’t make sense. But I hope you still enjoy! Mwuah!

Some personal news, I will be joining the sports section team at the Ottawa Citizen this season! While I’m sad to leave Boston, I’m very excited about this new opportunity and to be closer to my family in Ottawa.

↳rozdefensesquad @raidtherink - August 27, 2016

NOOOOOO CASEY WE WILL MISS YOU SO MUCH! WHO WILL ASK ROZ QUESTIONS HE DOESNT HATE

↳Casey Williams @casey_williams  - August 27, 2016

Hopefully he takes pity on whoever replaces me.

Casey Williams @casey_williams  - October 8, 2016

It’s opening night for the Ottawa Centaurs, my hometown team, and I’m sitting in the press box. Dreams do come true. ❤️

↳victoriaaa @mythicalhockeyteam - October 8, 2016

Happy to have you here!! Hopefully the cens behave tonight…

-

Casey Williams @casey_williams  - December 13, 2016

Important Reporting: the in-arena DJ is playing a lot of Taylor Swift tonight.

-

Casey Williams @casey_williams - January 7th, 2017

As we head into the All-Star Break, the Cens are not looking to be in a good spot. Last in the league, categorically the worst power play, and a locker room struggling to click. A break to reset is needed.

↳victoriaaa @mythicalhockeyteam - January 7th, 2017

I hate that your first season with us is such a bad one :(

↳Casey Williams @casey_williams - January 7th, 2017

I’ve been a Cens fan my whole life. I’m used to it.

-

Casey Williams @casey_williams - February 11, 2017

Boyle is now on a five game point streak.

-

Casey Williams @casey_williams - March 13, 2017

Voyagers score on the power play. Hometown boy Hollander, too. There’s a lot of blue jerseys in the stands tonight.

-

Casey Williams @casey_williams - April 3, 2017

Cens are blocking shots left and right, but Dallas Kent still gets a shot in. 5-1 Toronto.

-

Casey Williams @casey_williams - June 8, 2017

Incredibly hockey history tonight as New York Admirals Captain Scott Hunter comes out publicly. A huge congratulations to Hunter for bringing the Cup to New York and coming out. #HockeyIsForEveryone 🌈

Another opening night for the Centaurs. How are we feeling Cens fans?

↳victoriaaa @mythicalhockeyteam - October 9th, 2017

*heavy sigh*

↳fourskates 🌸 @cennytaurus - October 9th, 2017

Is it too early to start tanking for the first round pick?

Do we HAVE to play?

↳Casey Williams @casey_williams - October 9th, 2017

Great energy, guys.

Things I love: No OT

-

Casey Williams @casey_williams - February 17, 2018

Zane Boodram heads down the tunnel after taking a puck up high. Cens fans should hope it’s not serious, as he’s the team’s leading goal scorer. On-Ice Team still cleaning up the blood.

↳victoriaaa @mythicalhockeyteam - February 17, 2018

If Bood is hurt I’m walking into traffic.

-

Casey Williams @casey_williams - April 14, 2018

The Centaurs are one season shy of setting a new record for a playoff drought in the league. They need a wake up call and star power if there’s any hope for this team.

↳KD 🏒@topshelfcens - April 14, 2018

Still happy to be here?

↳Casey Williams @casey_williams - April 14, 2018

Living my best life ❤️

Aww, you and your brother look so much alike! Congrats to the happy couple!

-

Casey Williams @casey_williams - July 1, 2018

Holy Hell. Ilya Rozanov has signed with the Ottawa Centaurs.

↳Casey Williams @casey_williams - July 1, 2018

Excuse my language. But. Holy Hell. There’s our missing star power.

WHAT IS MY LIFE. WE’VE NEVER WON THIS HARD. WHY IS THIS HAPPENING

↳rozdefensesquad @raidtherink  - July 1, 2018

As distraught as I am right now, it is nice that we’re reuniting Roz with his emotional support beat reporter.

↳victoriaaa @mythicalhockeyteam  - July 1, 2018

I promise we will take good care of him!

-

Casey Williams @casey_williams - September 27, 2018

Ilya Rozanov has arrived in Ottawa for informal skates with the rest of the team. Fitting in immediately, as you can imagine. And yes, he still calls me “ptichka” because of how much I tweet.

↳victoriaaa @mythicalhockeyteam  - September 27, 2018

How long did you cover the bears, Casey?

↳Casey Williams @casey_williams  - September 27, 2018

I went to school in Boston and got a job right out of college with a local paper. I covered them for about… six years? So I got to know the team pretty well. Rozanov has always been good with faces, too.

↳victoriaaa @mythicalhockeyteam  - September 27, 2018

So he’s nice? Good fit for the team?

↳Casey Williams @casey_williams  - September 27, 2018

For his rat persona on the ice, he was always kind off of it, if a little snarky. I think he’ll fit in great.

↳victoriaaa @mythicalhockeyteam  - September 27, 2018

I can live with a little snark.

↳rozdefensesquad @raidtherink  - September 27, 2018

-

Casey Williams @casey_williams - October 11, 2018

My third opening night covering the Ottawa Centaurs, and this is the loudest I have ever heard this arena. Even though he hasn’t played a game yet, Rozanov has brought the spark back to Cens fans.

↳fourskates 🌸 @cennytaurus - October 11, 2018

Let’s hope he brings us a cup!!! #GoCensGo

Casey Williams @casey_williams - October 11, 2018

I don’t know if you guys know this, but Ilya Rozanov is very good at hockey.

-

Casey Williams @casey_williams - November 7, 2018

5-2, Toronto. That will do it for this game. You can practically see the steam coming out of Rozanov’s ears from the press box.

Casey Williams @casey_williams - November 16, 2018

Evan Dykstra with his second goal of the season.

Casey Williams @casey_williams - November 28, 2018

Breaking News: Ilya Rozanov (Centaurs) and Shane Hollander (Voyagers) seem to put an end to their rivalry by announcing their joint charity: The Irina Foundation, which will support suicide prevention initiatives. I’m blown away.

↳Casey Williams @casey_williams

“My mother died when I was twelve years old. She lost her battle. This foundation is for her.” - an emotional Rozanov in discussing the namesake of the foundation, his late mother.

↳Casey Williams @casey_williams

Hockey can be such a force for good. It’s incredible stuff to see the two major superstars of the league open up about this and put aside an on-ice rivalry for something bigger than hockey. ❤️

-

Casey Williams @casey_williams - December 7, 2018

TRADE ALERT - Wyatt Hayes is your newest Ottawa Centaur. Full trade details to come.

↳victoriaaa @mythicalhockeyteam - December 7, 2018

Oh, a goalie. What a novelty. Crazy that we haven’t had one this whole season

↳fourskates 🌸 @cennytaurus - December 7, 2018

I’ve heard good things about Hayes. Apparently he’s a huge nerd.

↳victoriaaa @mythicalhockeyteam - December 7, 2018

Even better. I love when my goalies are little freaks

↳KD 🏒@topshelfcens - December 7, 2018

Hey @casey_williams will you find out if Hayes is indeed a nerd or not?

Casey Williams @casey_williams - December 15, 2018

It’s Ilya Rozanov’s first game back in Boston since he left for Ottawa this summer and he is receiving… a less than warm welcome. Bears fans are quite upset about the departure of their former captain, which came seemingly out of nowhere.

↳Casey Williams @casey_williams - December 15, 2018

Still plenty of Rozanov jerseys in the crowd, but he’s getting boo’ed every time he touches the puck. Rozanov isn’t letting it shake him, though. He currently has a goal and an assist.

-

Casey Williams @casey_williams - December 22, 2018

Ilya Rozanov is wearing a santa hat at practice today. Every time he scores a goal, you can hear the “Ho! Ho! Ho!” from across the rink.

-

Casey Williams @casey_williams - January 14, 2019

Absolutely heartbreaking news to hear about the passing of Duncan Harvey. This sport is so hard on its players. Sending prayers to the Harvey family. ❤️

-

Casey Williams @casey_williams - January 16, 2019

Like many players, Rozanov has skipped the All-Star Game to attend Harvey’s funeral. After opening up about the death of his mother, one can imagine this is particularly emotional for him. The league will not be fining players attending the funeral.

↳victoriaaa @mythicalhockeyteam - January 16, 2019

They would do that?????

↳Casey Williams @casey_williams - January 16, 2019

I mean, normally, yes, they fine players that skip All-Star weekend. But they’re making an exception for anyone attending Harvey’s funeral.

-

Casey Williams @casey_williams - January 24, 2019

Things I love: No OT

-

Casey Williams @casey_williams - February 14, 2019

Rozanov is on FIRE tonight. Even though he and Hollander seem to be best buds now, he sure loves to score goals against his friend. 3-0 Centaurs, all three scored by Rozanov

↳victoriaaa @mythicalhockeyteam - February 14, 2019

Someone should look at the stats of how many hattys Roz has against hollander

↳KD 🏒@topshelfcens- February 14, 2019

↳Hayes's Heroes 💪 @CENS4LYFE - February 14, 2019

↳victoriaaa @mythicalhockeyteam - February 14, 2019

MY MAANNNNNNNNNN ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

-

Casey Williams @casey_williams - March 14th, 2019

Wyatt Hayes seems like the only player on the ice tonight. He’s stopped 52 shots on goal–a new career record for him.

↳Hayes's Heroes 💪 @CENS4LYFE - March 14, 2019

Give Hayes a gun.

↳Casey Williams @casey_williams - March 14, 2019

Well let’s maybe start with a defensive core.

-

Casey Williams @casey_williams - March 29, 2019

Coach Laviolette is not happy about that penalty call. Arguing with the officials now.

↳fourskates 🌸 @cennytaurus

Exciting news in Ottawa, Ilya Rozanov has officially been named captain of the Centaurs. He was already defacto captain, with previous C Giroux on LTIR, but it’s nice to see him get the letter. Well deserved.

↳Casey Williams @casey_williams - September 26, 2019

I rarely wax poetic about players, but I’ve followed Roz his whole career. He is a great player and a great leader. He cares about his players and is genuine in his kindness. Ottawa is lucky to have him.

↳KD 🏒@topshelfcens - September 26, 2019

Pls stop im gonna CRY ❤️

-

Casey Williams @casey_williams - September 29, 2019

Luca Haas will get a development season in the AHL, but I think that will be good for him. No sense rushing into a struggling team when he could get better ice time elsewhere right now.

-

Casey Williams @casey_williams - October 3, 2019

Chatted with Wyatt Hayes about his newest goalie masks which features his favorite super heroes. I have learned more about superheroes than I ever thought I would.

-

Casey Williams @casey_williams - October 10, 2019

It’s opening night again in Ottawa. There were quite a few roster changes over the summer, particularly with the defense. If you missed all the news, here’s your recap going into tonight’s game: [LINK]

-

Casey Williams @casey_williams - October 10, 2019

Ilya Rozanov with the first goal of the season, to absolutely no one’s surprise. Scored from his typical office, top shelf. As the kids say, the boys are buzzin’.

Flying into LaGuardia is always a bit of a nightmare for me. Why is the city so big? Why are the buildings so tall? Why does my luggage always get lost? Where are my headphones? Who am I?

-

Casey Williams @casey_williams - November 28, 2019

Rozanov and Hunter are chatting at center ice during warm ups. From what I can see, I’d guess our captain is congratulating their captain on his recent engagement to his long-time boyfriend.

↳victoriaaa @mythicalhockeyteam - November 28, 2019

Does ilya know he’s got lesbians who would die for him

↳KD 🏒@topshelfcens - November 28, 2019

↳jozanov (jean rozanov) @ilya81  - November 28, 2019

Casey Williams @casey_williams - November 28, 2019

Cens lose to the Admirals, but I really think it was a strong showing. And if we hadn’t had those goals called back for being offside, and if the universe was working in our favor, we might have won.

-

Casey Williams @casey_williams - January 23, 2020

But for the love of god, can we stop going to overtime.

Casey Williams @casey_williams - January 23, 2020

↳victoriaaa @mythicalhockeyteam - March 7, 2020

I asked him before the game how he felt about it. He said: “I understand why. I will still love this city, even if they hate me. I grew up here, and it was home. And I left. It was right move for my life, but will always be a little sad about–

↳Casey Williams @casey_williams  - March 7, 2020

My parents are here for this year’s Opening Night. My father has pointed out at least seventeen things that are different from the last time he was here. Only half of them are correct.

Casey Williams @casey_williams - October 8, 2020

More importantly, Luca Haas officially makes his NHL debut tonight!

-

Casey Williams @casey_williams - October 18, 2020

Luca Haas officially has his very first goal in the National Hockey League. I think the bench is about to explode like a bunch of proud fathers. Seriously, I can’t remember the last time I saw the team this excited.

Casey Williams @casey_williams

Tough loss tonight, but the captain made a point to tell me that he wants the focus to be on their rookie’s goal and celebrating that.

-

Casey Williams @casey_williams - October 21, 2020

Luca Haas has his second goal of his career against the Voyagers, and got a congratulatory stick tap from Shane Hollander about it. Hard to tell what he’s more excited about.

HEATED RIVALRY, the new documentary about the Hollander-Rozanov rivalry will air on ESPN this weekend. Rozanov says there’s nothing interesting in it, but I think he underestimates how popular the rivalry was.

Casey Williams @casey_williams - November 5, 2020

Huge Breaking News: Troy Barrett has been traded to the Ottawa Centaurs.

↳victoriaaa @mythicalhockeyteam - November 11, 2020

Do you think the recording of him calling out Kent at practice had anything to do with this?

↳Casey Williams @casey_williams - November 11, 2020

Not sure, but wouldn’t surprise me.

-

Casey Williams @casey_williams - November 12, 2020

Troy Barrett seemed to struggle to find his sea legs on his first game with the new team, but a steady effort from the Captain kept the Cens in game and got the W. More here: [LINK]

-

Casey Williams @casey_williams - December 15, 2020

Tonight is the first time that the Cens play the Guardians following the controversial Troy Barrett trade. You have to wonder what Wiebe is saying to the guys in the locker room.

Casey Williams @casey_williams  - December 15, 2020

Crazy sequence of events. Barrett scores. He and Kent start getting into it. Rozanov lays him out, Kent says something else, Roz decks him. Rozanov handed a game misconduct.

Casey Williams @casey_williams   - December 15, 2020

This game has been one thing after another. Barrett and Kent get into it AGAIN in the final minute of play, and Kent tackled Barrett. Yes, tackled. Ugly, ugly stuff tonight.

Casey Williams @casey_williams   - December 15, 2020

Media’s not allowed in the room tonight, a rarity. I think everyone wants to just defuse the situation.

As I’m sure many of you have heard, there was a problem with the Centaurs’ team plane and they had to make an emergency landing. I don’t fly with the team, but I’m told that everyone is okay, just shaken up. Very scary situation, but they’re okay.

Hey, folks. I know there is a video circulating right now. I do not have any information about what is happening, but until we hear from Hollander and Rozanov’s camps, we should not be adding to the social media fire right now.

↳Casey Williams @casey_williams  - March 17, 2021

I will speak more on this when we have official news. Until then, please respect the player’s privacy in what is looking to be a very overwhelming moment.

↳Casey Williams @casey_williams - March 18, 2021

I certainly don’t need to explain to all of you how incredibly huge this is, and how heartbreaking it is that they were outed before they were ready. I have covered Rozanov his whole career, and I know how much he values his privacy.

↳Casey Williams @casey_williams - March 18, 2021

Hollander and Rozanov are the two biggest names in hockey and have been for a decade. It breaks my heart to know that they have had to keep their relationship a secret for so many years. I hope that moving forward they can live in peace.

↳Casey Williams @casey_williams - March 18, 2021

And I fully, completely believe that it has never affected their game negatively, aside from making each other better players. Remember the dueling hat tricks? The records broken? These are two elite players. They just also happen to love each other.

↳Casey Williams @casey_williams - March 18, 2021

In the coming days, I hope that people continue to give them their privacy. The world is scrutinizing them right now, and I can’t imagine what they’re going through. My heart is breaking for them.

-

Casey Williams @casey_williams - March 20, 2021

I have something to say, and it makes me very scared. But if Roz can be brave, so can I. I have been out as a lesbian to my friends and family for over a decade. I have kept it private in professional spheres because of hockey culture.

↳Casey Williams @casey_williams - March 20, 2021

I have been harassed by other journalists, by players, scrutinized for being in locker rooms. I have been terrified to speak openly about my beautiful fiancee for fear of online harassment. I know visibility is important, I just didn’t want carry that.

↳Casey Williams @casey_williams - March 20, 2021

It’s hard to be brave. I know there are many wonderful queer folk who have been living openly for decades, and I am proud of them. They make my existence easier. But it can be challenging when you’re steeped in toxic sports culture.

↳Casey Williams @casey_williams - March 20, 2021

I’ve been outed, in high school, and it’s horrible. It’s so horrible. Even if things get better later, in that moment, the world comes crashing in on you. I cannot imagine how overwhelming this has all been for Ilya and Shane.

↳Casey Williams @casey_williams - March 20, 2021

If anything, I hope Ilya and Shane know that they are not alone, and they are very beloved by the queer community. We are all in this together, we all stand together, and things can only get better from here.

↳Casey Williams @casey_williams - March 20, 2021

Not a stupid question! But no, they’re on opposite sides of the room. I’m told by Hollander. “I see that guy all the time. His stall stinks. I get enough of it at home.” The chirping is a little undercut by the heart eyes he’s shooting Roz.

I’m so obsessed with them.

I swear I am only tweeting this because Roz said: “Tell the tweeters, ptichka” but every time Hollander scores in practice, he gets a smooch on the helmet from his captain.

It’s Opening Night in Ottawa. My wife is in the barn. Shane Hollander is an Ottawa Centaur. Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov are married to each other. Cens fans, how are we feeling?
