Chapter 1: Cover

Generally, you guys hear from Luula on the main fic. Over here, it's generally going to be mock (me).

 

Anyways, that said, I didn't do much alt text for this chapter, so the images aren't super accessible.

The final cover came out this way, and has a solid number of Luula's OCs on it.

Here's a zoom in of the guys - Danilov, Berggren, Archer, Casey, Hunter, Kallio, Paulsen, Martin, and Price. I had a really good time adding in a lot of tender caressing of each other's tennis rackets, and other innuendo. Please observe Kallio tying his shoes and Berggren showing off his shaft and balls to Danilov.

Drawing this many dudes was a lot of work, so I made things easier on myself by modeling them out - I use a program called magic poser on the iPad. (This did not save me from having to make SO many decisions about outfits, haircuts, and shoes.)

I also modeled out an entire to-scale tennis court.... but for the record, I think this was a bad move. I absolutely should have just fudged it to optimize the composition.
Also, using magic poser to do this was a pain in the ass -- everything is scaled in reference to itself, not in inches or anything, so it was a lot of laying things against the grid and doing math. I love working with this program generally, but there's definitely more precise options on desktop.

Anyways.

This was my first pitch, and I did wind up modeling this out.

I could have fit all 19-ish characters in this way, and I do think it's funnier than the cover angle I went with, but I got to squeeze so much innuendo into the more zoomed in guys. So. Tossup I guess.

I also doodle Luula's first pitch for a cover, which is ALSO really funny.

As we've gotten more into things and defined the tone, though, I've thought a lot about doing a more serious cover 🤔 so you might see an alternative cover down the line.

I am not going to go out of my way to make this SUPER easy to get into as baby's first CSS, but I've done some work to still make this like… Accessible to use and adjust for an uncurious layperson who doesn't want to get too under the hood by way of making a spreadsheet. You're welcome to get in there and dick around if you're great with spreadsheets and CSS.

First things first - I started with Azdaema's Snapchat Skin. The big difference between what we're doing and what the original snapchat code is doing is that we decided early on that we should have a different color for every chat participant, to help make sense of the chaos. That means individual CSS for each character.

SO I BUILT A SPREADSHEET, YOU CAN MAKE A COPY IF YOU WANT. it also contains a way to generate CSS for proboards forum posts (like we did for "my momsold me to Scott Hunter, a Shane Hollander fanfiction"), and generate tumblr posts (based on phyripo's tumblr css guide)

Was there a more optimal way to do this? Maybe, I dunno, but this is how I have fun when I'm in an art slump.

The other thing I went off script with from azdaema's CSS/what snapchat does, is with putting together the details/summaries containers for images. Azdaema's "no nudes, sorry" joke definitely tickled me, and definitely contributed to my and luula's decision to put actual dick pics in our story, but that meant I wanted something that would stay open longer than their css based solution. And given the subject matter I wanted to preserve the ability to collapse things even if CSS is turned off.

So we used the (pretty new to the internet actually!) standard details/summary tag.

One thing I had a bunch of fun with was the arrow swinging around during the transition. I initially put a little bounce on it, but turns out ao3 doesn't support bezier timing curves or something? I dunno.

Anyways, you can change the arrow by adjusting the unicode symbol in the spreadsheet too, but it might look wonky to have a unicode character with different dimensions -- so you might need to adjust the CSS if you want to go that route. If you want to do that, then you can unwind row 11, adjust the css for offsets in summary::before in cell B11, and then copy past across the rest of the row. (B11 to Z11)

We also used Azdaema's retro iOS skin, and I have a spreadsheet for generating html for that too, but I'm not 100% happy with it yet so I have luulapants beta testing. It'll make its way over to the public version of the spreadsheet eventually.

Feeling #blessed to have a cocreator who indulges my most absurd instincts. I unfortunately think animals in shutter shades are REALLY funny.

There was a point in my life where I contemplated doing a whole series of animals in shutter shades and putting them on t-shirts and tank tops to sell. I never got beyond "shark" but my spouse and I both have tank tops with a shark in shutter shades that we wear from time to time.
