Got here first!
Summary
The front door of the cottage banged open and Ilya and Shane both tumbled out, shoving at each other and darting for the car.
“I told, I carry groceries!” Ilya protests. “First is ‘no carry bags, Ilya’, ‘how’s your ribs, Ilya’, but I am fine. Hollander. Hollander!”
“You don’t even know where the groceries go, there’s no reason for both of us- My parents can carry their own stuff! Rozanov!”
Ilya’s palms slapped onto Yuna’s car door, his breathing slightly elevated, cheeks flushed and a wide boyish grin on his face. “Got here first!”
Notes
Prompt fill for day thirty of the Retro Writing May 2026 Challenge: Missing Scene!
This one takes place after Shane and Ilya have their awkward pasta dinner with Shane's parents (thank you for pasta!). They offer to come over and visit later, after stopping in town, and promise to text before they arrive. (David learned his lesson.)
Got here first!
Mom: Heading over now
Mom: We’re going to stop at the store and pick up a fruit tray. Do you need anything?
Mom: Too late, done at store
Mom: Should be there in a few minutes
Mom: We’re parked out front
Mom: Shane?

“Do we… just go home?” David asked, and Yuna frowned, shaking her head. This was so unlike Shane; even when he was on the road for games, he never ignored her messages for this long. What could he possibly be-
Yuna shook her head again, this time to clear that thought right out. Nope.
Besides, it’s not as if sex took that long. They’d left their lakehouse an hour ago. Maybe the boys were swimming?
The front door of the cottage banged open and Ilya and Shane both tumbled out, shoving at each other and darting for the car.
“I told, I carry groceries!” Ilya protests. “First is ‘no carry bags, Ilya’, ‘how’s your ribs, Ilya’, but I am fine. Hollander. Hollander!.”
“The groceries are in the trunk, just touching the car doesn’t count.” Shane argues from the back of the car, rapping his knuckles on the trunk twice. Yuna’s hand automatically pops the release, but she can’t get out of the car with Ilya blocking the door.
“You boys fighting already?” David asks, climbing out of his side of the car and moving to the back to help Shane.
“No.”
“No?”
“If we were, Shane started it.” Ilya clarifies.
“Can I get out now?” Yuna asks dryly, uncertain why Ilya’s keeping her pinned in the car. The trunk slams shut, David and Shane making their way up the stone path to the front door, grocery bags in hand.
“Da, yes.” Ilya replies, kindly opening the door for her.
“Thank you.”
“Of course. Welcome to cottage.” Ilya grins, holding his elbow out for Yuna to take.
“Oh! Who knew you were such a polite young man?” Yuna teases, taking Ilya’s arm and letting him escort her up the path.
“Shane says he does not need help bringing in anything from car, and I know he is wrong with this.” Ilya demures. “Let him carry groceries, I am bringing up rear with best for last.”
Yuna laughs, letting Ilya hold the front door open for her and bowing lowly to usher her inside.
“Stop flirting with my mom.” Shane calls from the kitchen.
“How can I help, when she is such a pretty lady?” Ilya chirps.
“I’ll tell Dad on you.”
“David does not mind. Do you David?”
“Well, Yuna’s always the prettiest lady in the house, even when she’s the only one in it.”
“You’re supposed to be on my side.” Shane protests.
“Well, it’s not our fault you brought home such a charming young beau.” Yuna smirks, hip checking Shane over to make room at the counter and pulling things out of the paper grocery bags.
“Beau? Beau?” Shane’s dismay is just too fun to tease at.
“What is this? Beau? Like lovers?” Ilya asks, propping his elbows on the granite counter top and cocking his head. Maybe they were swimming; his hair is still wet, and so is Shane’s.
“No.” Shane says firmly.
“Technically yes though.” David corrects.
Shane shakes his head in defeat and lets Yuna usher him out of the kitchen so she can get to work.
“I’m going back to Montreal.” Shane announces, and makes to move for the front door.
“Noooo. Hollander!” Ilya cries, dramatically throwing his arms around Shane when he goes to shove past him, drawing him in for a hug and planting big, wet smooches on his cheeks.
Yuna ducks her chin to hide her smile. Shane’s own smile is radiant, and he’s leaning into Ilya’s side like they’re two halves that finally snapped back to one whole again.
A quick glance at David confirms that he’s thinking the same thing, and they share that private sort of smile that comes from decades of partnership.
He’s finally happy. Our boy. Can you believe it?
And even as brash and loud as he is, looking at Ilya with her son… she can.
