Coffee Tables
Summary
David and Yuna visit Shane at the cottage... and stumble across something unexpected!
Notes
I think I've written a similar piece with just David before? Must still be hidden in my drafts somewhere, but for now, here goes!
Coffee Tables
David steps into Shane's living room - and freezes.
He feels Yuna walk into him, to look around him to see what has startled him so much, and catch sight of Shane on the couch.
Shane, who is asleep, naked, and very much not alone.
Perhaps strangely, the first thing that really catches David's attention isn't the nudity or the fact that the leg thrown around Shane's hips doesn't seem to belong to a woman, but the expression on Shane's face: he looks content, serene even, utterly relaxed in the other man's arms.
Yuna turns to him and wants to speak, David quickly shushes her with a finger on her lips, pushes her back into the adjoining kitchen area.
"He looks happy," he murmurs to her questioning look.
Yuna peeks back around the corner before carefully closing the door, leaving a gap so the sound of it latching won't wake Shane and his - boyfriend? Hookup?
"Yes. He does."
For a moment, they just stand there, neither knowing quite what to do. Should they leave, pretend they've never seen anything? Come back later in the day maybe? Make some noise by the front door to wake them without walking in on them?
In the living room, someone starts to stir, yawning and shifting on the couch, then the sound of him stretching his joints.
"Nugggh, Shanyshko, don't get up so early again," his - partner? grumbles blearily. There's something in his accent... David thinks he might have heard that voice before. Is it someone they know? All he saw on the couch had been strong limbs wrapped around Shane, and some light hair from the head curled up behind Shane's neck.
"I don't think it's that early." Fumbling for a phone, probably, then - "Nope, we slept in. Past nine am."
"Ughh nine is not sleeping in, we still didn't get any sleep," the other voice whinges.
"And whose fault is that?"
"What?" He retorts, completely indignant. "Is not my fault you had to try and beat me again and again and a-"
"Yeah, yeah," Shane snorts. "But you know I'm not talking about that."
"Oh no, we fucked for maybe half an hour because we were so tired after playing stupid video game until three am, you do not put this on me," comes the prickly reply.
David looks at Yuna, who avoids meeting his eye, her cheeks reddening.
Well, it's not like they expected Shane's relationship with that man to be platonic from the way they found them, but still, it's something else to hear it said out loud. Should they say something, announce their presence before there can be more sex talk? Or try to quietly sneak out?
"As if you didn't have fun!" Shane huffs, then starts to laugh. "I still can't believe you played as Montreal!"
David doesn't know why that is so surprising - because it's Shane's team and he wanted to pick it himself, maybe? - but the other man obviously understands the joke as he starts to cackle.
"Ah, is historically good team!" He replies gleefully. "Just not so good now, bad luck for you to-" there's shuffling and he squeaks, giggling and panting. "Ah, mercy, mercy!"
"So you take it back?"
"Is not my fault Montreal is second rate tea-ah! Not tickling, no, I meant everyone except you obviously, st-stop, ah!"
Laughing, Shane flops back down onto the couch, making it creak. From the "Oof!" the other man lets out, David guesses Shane has landed his weight onto him.
"JJ and Hayden aren't bad."
The other man sighs. "Solnyshko, I hate having to tell you this, but them being your friend, it does not make them good hockey players."
Shane splutters, then there's a slap, a squeak, and ensuing sounds of more play-wrestling...
Yuna tugs on David's wrist, walking backwards to the door, taking the opportunity of the noise to sneak out. David nods and is just about to follow when -
"Careful! Shit, are you okay?"
"Yes, yes. Am okay. Blyat, would have been stupid way to destroy another table. How many would that be, now?"
Shane bursts into giggles. "Oh my god, yeah. Fucking coffee tables."
"Oh, coffee table! Reminds me, I got video of someone else breaking one."
"Oh god, don't let it be porn." Shane's deadpan voice is so familiar to David, yet so different - since when does Shane so easily joke about sex? Well, maybe he's just awkward around the topic with his parents...
More laughter. "No, no! I don't have Marly's sex tape, just him being idiot. Here -"
Noise starts, probably a video on his phone. Indistinct voices and music, then shouting: 'ann-and, b'cause we're the best - bestest, hey! You fuckers aren't listening-' more noise, then a different voice shouting - the one of the man on Shane's couch, except sharper somehow, and where has David heard that accent before? 'Marly you govno, get down there! If you break bones and I have to explain to coach why team got fucked up on my watch, am making you suffer!'
'Coach'? Are they fellow hockey players? Makes sense that whoever Shane would meet would be into hockey too, David supposes. But there's no Marly on Shane's team, is there? He hasn't remembered the names of the newest rookies yet...
'Relax, cap, I got this! Can't fuck up the team because we're! The! Best! Fucking -' a loud crash, after each of the last words had been marked by a stomp or jump. A moment of shocked silence, only broken by the start of a new song in the background, then - 'i'm okay!' and loud cheering together with Russian curses.
"See? Is like herding cats!"
Shane laughs - so loud and unrestrained, David doesn't think he has ever heard him laugh like that except maybe when he was a child.
"Oh god, I can't believe him. Though, we really shouldn't judge when we've broken coffee tables before. And why is it always a coffee table, no matter what we do? And not like, a chair or I don't know, a bed?"
The other man cackles. "Ah, you want to destroy bed with me? You only need to ask!"
"Ilya!" Shane shrieks, but he is still laughing.
The only reply he gets is more laughter and the sound of hands lightly slapping on skin -
and a moment later, David is faced with the sight of a naked man, Shane slung over his shoulder in a fireman carry, caught with one strong arm around Shane's legs, the other hand lightly and rhythmically slapping Shane's ass...
Only to freeze with his palm on Shane's ass cheek when he spots David and Yuna staring at them.
"What-?" Before Shane can finish the question, Ilya gently lowers him to the ground and turns him around to face them.
"Ohmygod." Shane turns an alarming shade of pale, maybe from standing up too quickly after being nearly upside down, but probably mainly from being caught naked and with... company... by his parents.
"Shane? Shane!" The other man - Ilya, and doesn't that tickle some memory somewhere in David's brain? - helps Shane to the floor, Shane's head to his knees.
"Breathe, Shanyshko, keep breathing, yes? In... Out... Is okay, yes?" His eyes flicker up to him and Yuna. "Just your parents, da? They do not look angry. Just, ah, surprised."
For a moment, before returning his focus to Shane, his gaze turns into a glare, as if telling David they better not dare be angry with Shane about this... and in that moment, seeing that cold glare directed at him, David suddenly realizes where he recognizes that face from, that russian-accented voice.
Ilya Rozanov of the Boston Raiders.
Well, Shane never did do anything by halves.
"Is okay," Ilya keeps reassuring Shane, talking gently to him, sweet words interspersed with jokes to distract him and phrases in Russian until Shane's breathing has slowed and his face, when he looks up, has regained a more normal color. He quickly ducks his head again when he finds David and Yuna still looking at them, and David takes Yuna's arm to turn her away from them.
Yuna looks like she has seen a ghost, and David gives her a wry smile. Yes, the Rozanov of it all has been a surprise, but it's clear that the two of them care for each other, and in private Rozanov doesn't seem at all like the ferocious hockey player all of Canada hates - to the point where David barely recognized him, even.
"Oh my god, we're literally naked," Shane murmurs, clearly mortified.
Ilya chuckles. "Ah, could be worse, no?"
David tries hard not to think about what 'worse' would entail.
"We just put on clothes now, and is fine. Well, maybe quick shower first? Or, do you need morning run?"
David raises an eyebrow in quiet recognition. Ilya clearly knows Shane very well, to understand that sometimes his routines are a need more than a guideline for his days.
"No, I'm fine. I mean, yes, shower, definitely, but I'm - I'm more nervous about talking to my parents than skipping a run."
Ilya murmurs something quiet back, then there's the sound of a soft kiss before they get to their feet.
David slowly turns his head, making sure to keep his eyes at head-height and no lower.
"Um, we're just gonna..." Shane gestures towards the hallway. "But um, you're not gonna leave right?"
"We'll be right here," David reassures him. "Maybe I'll put the kettle on?"
Shane nods and tugs Ilya out of the kitchen towards the hallway.
David turns towards the kitchen appliances, filling the kettle with water while Yuna gets the tea.
Who would have ever thought that he'd be looking forward to having tea and maybe brunch with Ilya Rozanov?
But, as he listens to Shane and Ilya bicker while they make their way through the house, Shane laughing again so soon after having had a panic attack, David can't help but smile.
If Shane likes him so much, this Ilya Rozanov kid can't be so bad!
