Summary

A video leaks on the internet: Ilya Rozanov, staggering drunk in an alley outside a club in Montreal. He's angry, then crying. What he's saying is pretty incoherent, but it seems like he and Rose Landry had a secret relationship in the past, and now he's jealous seeing her and Shane Hollander dancing together!

Well. That's what the internet concludes, anyway.

The denizens of r/mlhockey and r/mlhmess are delighted to follow this drama as it unfolds. Meanwhile, Shane and Ilya have to deal with being seen as love rivals as well as rivals on the ice.

Notes

Chapter 1

The video is grainy and obviously shot through a doorway where the door is open by just a few inches. The person filming must be inside; what's outside is a dingy city alleyway containing a dumpster, a heap of beer bottles in a recycling crate, and three athletic men clad in expensive clubwear.

Though they’re all drunk, one of them, a man with dirty blond curls, is much drunker, or maybe just angrier, than the rest. He’s picking beer bottles out of the crate and throwing them at the brick wall on the other side of the alley. One of the other guys, a titan with a lantern jaw, tries to wrestle a bottle out of his grasp. The belligerent one starts to swear at him in Russian and in English.

“Calm the fuck down, Rozanov, or you’re gonna get arrested,” the tall guy says.

“Fuck you, Marleau!” Rozanov says. His speech is slurred and his Russian accent is strong. “You don’t fucking know!” He throws this bottle against the wall, and it smashes just like the others did.

“Okay, what don’t I know, Roz?”

“Fuck this shit,” spits Rozanov. “You saw them in middle of, in the fucking floor!” Another bottle thrown, another shattering of glass.

“Wait, is this about Hollander?” the third guy asks. “You’re flipping out just ‘cause he was in the club?”

“He can’t dance for shit,” says Rozanov. “Fuck! It should have been me. Why . . .” He trails off, reaches down to pick up one more beer bottle, and almost loses his balance. Marleau rushes forward to support him.

“Dude, you’re jealous he was with Rose Landry?” the third guy asks.

Held upright by his friend, Rozanov shouts, “He’s a fucking asshole!” Then he’s muttering: “You don’t know. It was secret. But I fucked up. I lost … I watch them dancing right there …” His anger is fading into something bitterer, quieter, that’s making his face contort. “My lover.”

“Rozy, are you saying you had a thing with Rose Landry before?” Marleau asks. 

“Cap, you mean Hollander stole your girl?”

After shaking off Marleau's grip, Rozanov staggers backwards to slump against the windowless wall of a building that might be a club, given the thumping bass that’s barely audible from it. “I can’t get what I want.” He starts mumbling in Russian.

“Ilya, we can’t understand you,” Marleau says with surprising gentleness.

“So I have money, fans, cars, Stanley Cup,” Rozanov says, his eyes half-closed, like he’s ready to pass out. There are tears on his cheeks. “I would give it all. But I can’t get what I want. I have to watch them together on dance floor. Why can’t I have what I want?”

“Uh,” says the third man, who’s been silent so far. “The Uber’s finally here, so …”

“Why can’t I have what I want?” Rozanov slurs plaintively one last time before Marleau puts his arm around his shoulders again and manhandles him down the alleyway to the street.

New video of Raiders captain Ilya Rozanov drunk off his ass outside a club in Montreal last night, angry and crying because he’s in love with Hollywood A-lister Rose Landry(!) and apparently had a secret relationship with her(?!) and Shane Hollander his lifelong rival is now dating her and was dancing with her in front of Rozanov in the club.

Also the Metros beat the Raiders 1-0 earlier that same night, just to add salt to the wound.

Chapter 2

Shane doesn’t get much sleep after Rose leaves. After a while, he gets out of bed, out of the bedsheets that he and Rose were in together a few hours earlier, and sits with his head in his hands. He wants to wash the sheets. If Ilya were here, he would laugh at Shane for that.

It’s quiet in his bedroom. The building is solid, with good soundproofing and double glazing, so he rarely gets woken up by noises outside. There’s only the hum of the central heating as it works to fight the cold front descending over Montreal.

So Shane has no reason to be awake, except that last night keeps running through his mind like tape of a disastrous game.

For the second time, sex with Rose has been a total failure, so unlike sex with Ilya that using the same word for both experiences doesn’t make sense at all. Shane has a natural talent for hockey; he knows what it feels like to be good at physical movement, to have mastery of his body. Sex with Rose is the exact opposite of that: a task Shane just can’t get the hang of.

Sex with Ilya is … it isn’t a task at all. It’s just feeling and wanting and getting. 

“Fuck,” Shane says to himself softly, pressing his fingers into his scalp, trying to ground himself in the pressure.

He shouldn’t keep tossing and turning in bed. That’s bad sleep hygiene and will lead to insomnia, according to a few of the sports psychology books Shane has read. 

Instead, Shane gets up, changes his sheets, puts the old ones in the washer, and showers until all the scent of last night is off him, replaced by the freshness of his familiar body wash. After that, he curls up on his couch under a blanket, phone in hand. It doesn’t matter: today is his day off, thank god. He’ll work out hard later, sleep well that night, and come back at the top of his game tomorrow.

Shane’s hair is still a little damp as he stares at his phone. Too exhausted to try reading the ebook he downloaded the day before, he instead watches a few “unlikely friends” YouTube videos—they’re still good no matter how old he gets. A chicken and a cat. A cow and a horse.

Feeling a little calmer, he moves on to Reddit and his account that he uses mostly—well, mainly—to look at DIY and house flipper subreddits, as well as various subs related to hockey.

He scrolls:

“Wait, what?” Shane says out loud.

He scrolls back up. Taps. Taps play.

Two minutes later, Shane is still sitting alone in his dark living room, lit only by the glow of his phone. But everything is different.

Ilya Rozanov, who literally told Shane he didn’t like Shane as a person, who was physically fucking chewing on a woman’s ear while staring Shane down, had been staggering on the street crying last night because he couldn’t have what he wanted. Because he had been watching Shane dancing with Rose and maybe … maybe it had hurt Ilya as much as seeing Ilya with that woman had hurt Shane.

Shane’s hand is pressed over his mouth, and he doesn’t know whether it’s because he’s about to laugh or cry. Fuck, Ilya had come so close to destroying both of their careers, but he hadn’t. Instead he’s just convinced the world that he’s deeply in love with Shane’s girlfriend.

They don’t know that Ilya wasn’t talking about Rose. Nobody, not a single soul on the planet other than Shane himself knows that … 

So I have money, fans, cars, Stanley Cup. I would give it all. But I can’t get what I want. I have to watch them together on dance floor. Why can’t I have what I want?

… that Ilya had to be, must be talking about Shane. That if this means anything, and isn’t just drunken ramblings, then Ilya is … in love with Shane.

Ilya Rozanov, the guy who had made Shane a gross, delicious open-face sandwich the last time they had sex. Ilya Rozanov who has a “regular woman” and would look for another one if he wasn’t so lazy. Ilya who had given Shane the very best first time anyone could ask for. Ilya, who went totally radio silent for six months after that sweet first time.

Rose would never do something like that. She just wouldn’t. She’s too kind and nice. And yet, if there were a million Shanes in a million realities, or whatever had happened in that movie of Rose’s about universes, every single Shane would run to Ilya. There was never really any contest at all. It’s Ilya he wants to touch, Ilya he wants to play against, Ilya he wants to fight with if Ilya’s being an asshole. It’s only Ilya.

As Shane is dabbing at his eyes with his pajama sleeve, his phone rings. And it’s Rose.

“Uh. Hi,” Shane says. What are you supposed to say to your girlfriend in a situation like this?

“Hey,” Rose says, sounding anxious. “If you’re awake, I guess you’ve seen this news story about the Raiders captain?”

“Yeah.”

“I just wanted to tell you that I don’t know him. I mean I’ve seriously never met him personally! I’ve seen him play just like anyone else.” A sigh. “They’re probably digging up photos of me at Raiders games right now.”

“I’m sorry,” Shane said. He leans forward, resting his forehead on his bent knees. His head aches, he's so fucking tired. He's so happy he can hardly think.

“It’s not your fault. But I am a little worried. If he’s delusional, I guess I need to talk to my security team. I did have a stalker before …”

“No, no, Ilya’s not like that!” The words are automatic. It’s only after Shane has said them that he realizes how they sound.

Rose’s fancy coffeemaker, which Shane has come to know well, sings its short jingle in the background of the call. “I guess you know him pretty well,” Rose says. “Since you’ve been rivals for so long.”

“Haha, yeah.” Shane is tugging at his hair. Wishing it was Ilya’s fingers making his scalp sting. “Rose.”

“Yeah?”

He’s going to have to say it now. Fast, before he loses his nerve. “I’m really sorry, but I think …”

Her voice is soft. “We should break up?”

“What?”

“Wasn’t that what you were going to say?”

This would be so much easier if she were here in person, if Shane could shake his head or nod when the words are stuck in his throat. “Um. Yeah. It was.”

“Okay. If you want to, that’s okay. I hope … I hope we can stay friends, real friends. I really like you, Shane. But I think you're right. Maybe you and me as a couple aren’t meant to be.”

It’s truly like a weight has been lifted from him, a heavy, stifling coat he’s been wearing for way too long. “Yeah, definitely. Thank you.” She hasn’t figured it out, has she?

“It’s okay. You’re a really good guy. I want you to be happy. Shoot, I gotta go—I need to craft a statement with my publicist before call time. I guess you probably want to do the same? Craft a statement, I mean, not … act.”

With a weary laugh, Shane says, “Yeah, no, I got it.”

They promise to call again that evening, and then she’s gone. 

Shane texts his publicist: I do not want to make any statement right now.

Then … well, it is his day off.

Chapter 3

The taxi that takes Shane from Logan Airport to Ilya’s house in Newton smells so artificially floral that it turns Shane’s stomach a little. Nevertheless, he’s fortunate, because this driver shows no recognition of him and spends the (long) drive complaining about traffic on I-95, something called the Big Dig, and feral turkeys that he claims are roaming his neighborhood. Shane nods politely and says, “Oh, man,” periodically while tensely gripping the seat edge.

Shane just threw on the first hoodie and coat he could find before rushing out of the house to make his plane—a first-class seat, thank god, so he didn’t have to make small talk with anyone next to him. Still, he’s very aware that people were staring at him in the airport. It was Montreal, after all.

When the taxi finally pulls up in front of the house, the driver whistles. “Wow. Nice place.”

“Yeah,” Shane says, trying to figure out the payment thing in the back seat after like three hours of sleep and an hour and a half of the most stressful plane ride he’s ever experienced. “Do I tip you on here or …?”

Eventually he figures it out. The taxi pulls away, leaving Shane to walk to Ilya’s door. It’s a weird echo of that day back in October when things were … way more normal between him and Ilya. If what’s between them—years of secret meetings and a public arch-rivalry—could ever be described as normal.

For years, Shane was pretty sure he understood who he was to Ilya. A hookup. Maybe someone Ilya cared about as a human being, at least a little bit. A fascination, potentially. Today, either Shane’s right and Ilya has some deep feelings he’s never bothered to voice, or Shane’s horribly wrong and this journey has made an already messy situation even messier.

Too late to go back now. Shane knocks.

He shuffles his feet, pulls his coat tighter against the autumn chill.

Shane knocks again. Still no answer.

“Come on, Rozanov!” he shouts, banging on the door. “I know you’re here, your car is outside!” That stupid, flashy car. Shane’s never seen Ilya drive it. They’ve never spent time together that way

Just when Shane’s getting really pissed off and embarrassed that he came all this way for nothing, the door swings open. “Jesus Christ,” Ilya says, his hand holding his head like it’s going to crack if he lets go. He looks like shit: unshaven, bloodshot eyes, messy hair, cringing away from the sunlight. “If you are here to murder me, just do it, because this Tylenol is not fucking working.”

It’s so charming that Shane can’t help smiling, if just for a moment. “No, I only murder people in Montreal. Home territory,” Shane says. God, he missed Ilya so fucking much. “Are you gonna let me in?”

Ilya gives a half-shrug and walks away from the door. Shane’s mom would have grounded him for life if he ever treated a guest that way, but fine: Shane follows him and closes the door. “Are you really going to be this much of an asshole after I flew here to see you?”

Ilya’s standing in the middle of his living room floor. “What, you want more of my food that's so bad you run away?” he snaps, only to wince a second later. “Fuck.” He pushes his thumb into his temple.

Shane swallows. “That’s not ... look, I'm sorry I freaked out.”

“Whatever,” says Ilya, sour. “Why are you here? To talk about what we tell media? We could have done this on the phone. Or you’re going to punch me for your girlfriend’s honor?”

Shane shoves his hands in his pockets. This is the moment where he gives Ilya the chance to stab him through the heart, to tell him again that he’s nothing more than a good mouth. “She’s not my girlfriend any more. Not since this morning.”

Ilya immediately stands a little straighter. His eyes are brighter, too, as though he’s just drunk a pot of coffee. “Ah,” he says.

Shane takes a deep breath. “Come here.”

And Ilya comes. Walks toward Shane and then they’re holding each other tight. Ilya’s resting his forehead on Shane’s shoulder. His body is shaking; he smells faintly of cigarettes. There’s no place Shane would rather be.

“I liked your food,” Shane says into Ilya’s hair, into the clean scent of the shampoo Ilya’s always used. That scent, just like everything else about Ilya, will always bring back memories of so many nights together. It wasn’t just fucking. Maybe it never was just that. “Sorry I made you think I didn’t.”

“Okay.” Ilya’s voice is thick. “You understand we still can’t, we can’t be public. We can’t do that. I don’t know what happens to hockey stars who dance with men in clubs and then go home to Russia, and I don’t want to find out. My father is … I have to be able to go to him.”

Holding him even tighter, rubbing his back, Shane says, “I know. Of course.” He read the translation of what Ilya said; his heart broke for it then too. Pressing a kiss to the side of Ilya’s head, to the curls he loves as he loves every part of this man, Shane says, “Ilya.”

“Shane.” As if to make up for the club, Ilya starts nibbling on Shane’s ear. “If we fuck right now, I need to be on my back. I will be sick if not.”

Even this is charming. It’s unbearable.

Shane pulls back to look at Ilya properly. “Wow. You know all these people online think you’re so romantic.”

“You try to be romantic when you are as hungover as a dog,” Ilya says, which doesn’t make sense, but maybe it’s an idiom in Russian. “Anyway, I am romantic. You came to me, didn't you?” His thumb is stroking Shane’s cheek so gently. He has never touched Shane this way before.

“No, you came to me. It was like five seconds ago,” Shane says.

Suddenly Ilya kisses him hard and deep—one of those plundering, claiming kisses that Shane has only ever known with Ilya. Ilya is the only one he’d want this type of kiss from, anyway.

Ilya does taste of cigarettes as well as mint. At least he's obviously brushed his teeth.

“You still want to? I mean, you're not too hungover?” Shane pants.

“Shane, I will never, never not want to fuck you,” Ilya says, squeezing Shane’s ass to emphasize the point.

“Because you like my body.” Shane tries to sound like he's teasing.

“Yes,” Ilya says. He meets Shane’s eyes with an unusually sober expression. “But also because I like you.” His voice is quiet.

“I like you too,” Shane says, his vision blurring.

Shockingly, Ilya’s face crumples as though Shane’s words were terribly cruel. He starts kissing Shane’s neck, muttering in Russian and leaving tear-traces there, until Shane needs him too badly and pulls him back so they can kiss properly again.

An hour later, they're snuggling in Ilya’s bed when Shane says, “What the fuck are we going to tell people about this?”

“They all think we were going to fight. So we tell them we punched each other. I will make it believable.” Lightly, Ilya nips Shane’s lower lip. “I have lots of bandages here too. They won’t know what’s under them.”

“You really think that’ll work?”

Hollander finally made a statement on Instagram this afternoon:

My aim is always to keep my personal life off the ice. However, I’m aware fans have questions about a video that was widely shared recently. I hope that if I address it, we can move on and refocus on hockey.

Ilya Rozanov and I are both captains of our teams. That requires a lot of responsibility. Today Rozanov and I talked, captain to captain, and we’re both ready to put personal matters aside and focus on the season. What’s most important is pushing ourselves to be the best that we can be. Looking forward to a good clean game the next time we face the Raiders.

Completely unrelated, here are some photos of Hollander after his plane landed in Montreal. Note he is sporting a slightly bruised lip with a butterfly bandage on it. He’s also wearing sunglasses.

I have also kindly included some photos of Rozanov at the Boston home game against Winnipeg this evening, where he played like a total demon and scored a hat trick in spite of the large square band-aid on his cheek. Just normal things!

PROOF: Hollandrov is not real. It’s always just been Hollanov.

You heard me. 

In the original drunken rant video, Ilya never says he was with Rose Landry. This is what he says:

1. It should have been me (dancing on the dance floor - doesn’t specify with who).
2. It was secret.
3. I fucked up.
4. I lost … (trails off)
5. I watch them dancing.
6. My lover (immediately after “them,” so not specifically referring to Rose)
7. I can’t get what I want/Why can’t I get what I want
8. I have to watch them together on dance floor.

Every single statement above could refer to Shane rather than Rose. He’s jealous watching Shane dancing. Shane is the secret lover.

Hollanov always being real, rather than Hollandrov, answers SO many questions we have been puzzling over all these years.

• Why was it secret? Because Shane is a guy, the MLH is super homophobic and so is Ilya’s home country
• Ilya is a national hero, so why does his father see him as a disappointment and why does his brother hate him? Because he is queer. 
• Why can’t he get what he wants? Homophobia.
• Why have we never seen any proof of a connection between Ilya and Rose? Because there isn’t one. Whereas Shane and Ilya had endless opportunities to meet and start a romance
• Why did Shane fly to Boston immediately after seeing the video? Because he understood that it was a confession of love to him, OH MY GOD. I believe this is when they got back together (see points below)
• Why didn’t they hold any resentment toward each other? Because Shane never “stole Ilya’s girlfriend”
• (Had to dig deep in the files for this one) Why did Shane have a bruise on his neck when leaving Boston after the fight (or “fight”)? Because it was a fucking hickey!!! Yes this point requires you to subscribe to the “the fight was fake” theory—because it was!! We never saw what was under Ilya’s big cheek bandage, and Shane’s lip was fine the next day. I believe they had to do a fake fight to explain why Shane flew to see Ilya without outing themselves.
• Why was Ilya on cloud 9 and scoring a hat trick right after the “fight”? Because he “got what he wanted,” oh my god I’m crying, he must have been so happy
• Why was Shane wearing $1k fancy sunglasses when he always dressed plain AF (until he got a stylist later that year) Because they were Ilya’s sunglasses! Sunglasses truthers, you are vindicated
• Why were they so buddy-buddy at the All-Star Game? Because they were (are) in love!
• Why was Ilya lingering on the ice after Shane got his concussion? Because that’s his man!
• Why the fuck did Ilya go to Ottawa? It was to be near Shane, oh my god, crying
• Why did they start a charity together? Probably at least somewhat as a cover for hanging out together, although I do think they care about mental health as an issue.

And finally, I present to you Ilya’s own words during his drunken meltdown:

I have money, fans, cars, Stanley Cup. I would give it all. 

You guys, HE KINDA DID. He lost a lot of fans and potential earnings by going to Ottawa. And he sold his cars for the Irina Foundation.

THIS MAN!!!!!!! IS A MAN OF HIS WORD!!!!

I also want to give kudos to Shane Hollander for hearing this heartwrenching love confession from his ex(?) and immediately (I think) breaking up with his girlfriend and hopping on a plane to get his man. I do feel sorry for Rose but she doesn’t seem to hold any animosity against Shane -- they’re seen together all the time and have referred to each other as best friends.

Actually, we’ve never heard of any other Shane Hollander girlfriends … is Shane just gay? Rose was his beard??

Anyway, I have stayed up all night writing this manifesto and am going to bed now to catch 2 hours of sleep before work. Love and peace to you all, and may Brad burn in hell for outing them.

Thank you OP. It’s great to see the truth come to light about Rose and Rozanov. I think she handled this with real grace. She could have outed them or even just denied she was ever with Rozanov, but instead she kept the whole thing private and let the speculation about herself continue so that Hollander and Rozanov were safe. Definitely true. I have a friend who works for the Raiders (office job) and she says Rozanov’s manwhore ways were well known back in the day. He also was FWBs with his best friend Svetlana Vetrova for a while. But my friend said he quit the womanizing ever since the meltdown video. She thought management just told him to be more careful and not make any more scandals.
