Hoodies and Fire Alarms
Summary
The realization hit Ilya like a body check. They weren’t just evacuating for a fire, they were in the middle of a hotel, full of Ottawa players and hockey fans. Shane let go of Ilya’s hand. He turned to look at his boyfriend and that’s when he noticed what Shane was wearing. A black Centaurs hoodie with the bright red letters and numbers printed on the back: Rozanov 81. Ilya was sure Shane hadn't noticed what he was wearing, but he had pulled the drawstrings of the hoodie tight, leaving a small a hole at the center of his flushed face.
The rookie, clearly starstruck, stared. “Are you Shane Hollander? Like, the Shane Hollander?” Ilya wasn’t sure who was going to faint first, Shane or Luca.
The others stood there staring at the two men, mouths slightly agape. Bood broke into a slow smile. “Nice hoodie, Hollander. Supporting the enemy now?"

Hoodies and Fire Alarms
Ilya sat alone in his hotel room, the quiet hum of the city outside was doing little to ease the ache inside of him. The faint glow of streetlights casted shifting patterns on the ceiling. Distant sounds of late-night traffic and occasional sirens underscored his solitude. He was spinning his phone in his hand, waiting for Shane’s reply.
Ottawa had played fiercely tonight, but in the end they had lost 4–3 to Montreal. Not a terrible score, considering the team had put their all into the game, but the sting of defeat lingered. Ilya was always harder on himself lately with his losses. Maybe because there were so many more now than at the beginning of his career. Still, he had put on the face of the perfect captain and went out with the rest of the team after the game. When everyone wanted to move the party to a different bar, he decided it was time to make an excuse to go back to the hotel.
"Come on, Roz!" Dykstra said. "Just come drink with us for an hour."
"We have flight tomorrow morning," he responded. "I need sleep."
"Boooo." The group chimed in resulting in Ilya giving them the middle finger.
"Goodnight, old man," Hazy waved as he left.
He wasn't lying about the morning flight, but that wasn't the reason he wanted to go back. Since he had been traded to Ottawa, he and Shane were a lot closer in distance. Which meant they were always able to see each other after their games. But tonight, Ilya had encouraged him to go out with his teammates. He deserved to be out celebrating with his team and spend some time with his friends. He didn’t always have to see Ilya after every game.
At least that was what he told himself earlier, but Ilya was seriously regretting that decision right now. His mood hadn't been the best all night, so if a particular freckled man was curled up beside him right now, he was sure he would feel a lot better. He checked his phone again. The message he’d sent to Shane ten minutes ago still had no reply. It was almost 11:00 PM, which is way past his boyfriend's usual bedtime. It was rare for him to be out at all let alone this late.
He sighed, sent another text, a little less hopeful this time, and set the phone aside. His eyes drifted to the ceiling as his thoughts continued to swim with Shane. Somewhere between waiting for a reply and the quiet lull of the room, his eyelids grew heavy. Sleep crept over him unnoticed.
He was jolted awake by sharp knock at the door. Blinking, trying to adjust to the light he'd left on, Ilya checked his phone. 1:30 AM. Still no messages from Shane. He was slightly worried, but before he could send a text to check in, the knocking came again, louder this time.
Annoyed and half-asleep, Ilya swung the door open, ready to scold whoever was disturbing him at this hour. Instead, he found Shane standing there with his cheeks flushed, eyes bright, a mischievous grin on his face.
“Ilyaaa,” Shane stretched the last syllable, voice slurred and playful. “Finally. You asshole, I was waiting forever.”
“Shane? It’s almost two. Why aren’t you home?”
“You…” another hiccup. “You said you missed me.”
Warmth flooded Ilya’s chest as he smiled. He loved drunk Shane. He could have kissed him right there in the middle of the hallway, but reality kept him cautious. He gently pulled Shane inside and shut the door.
“I always miss you, moy lyubimy,” Ilya murmured, pulling him close and pressing a kiss to his head. “You look like you had fun tonight.”
Shane hummed against Ilya’s collarbone, sending a chill down Ilya's spine. “Love it when you do the Russian words. Makes my brain go… quiet.” He pulled back just enough to look at Ilya, his gaze hazy but fixed on Ilya’s mouth. “Bar wasn't fun. Kept handing me drinks. I had to be a good captain. Couldn't say no. Missed you though. A lot. Thought about you all night." His hands hooked with practiced ease into the waistband of Ilya’s pajama pants.
Ilya caught his hands. “Shane… you’re drunk.”
"Yes, you like it when I'm drunk," he countered, sliding his hands back up under Ilya's shirt, palms flat against his stomach. Ilya's breath hitched at the heat of the touch. "Remember that one time in Boston?" He leaned up to nip at Ilya's jawline. "You liked it then."
Ilya couldn't help a smile creeping on his lips, because he indeed did remember. But he had to remain the strong one here. “Sweetheart, we are not doing anything tonight.”
“But Ilyaaa,” Shane whined, pouting as he leaned his full weight into Ilya, grinding a slow, rhythmic heat against his hip. "You said you had a present for me. And I want you. I've been wanting you all night. Can't you feel it?"
Jesus. Ilya took a deep breath to steady himself. He was going crazy. Shane had a way of breaking down his resolve like no one else, but he wasn't going to take advantage of his boyfriend's delirious state.
He gave Shane's head a few soft, gentle strokes. “Come lie down with me. You need to rest before your flight.”
He guided Shane to the bed, helped him out of his jacket, and pulled the blankets over them. Shane tried tugging at his pants again, but Ilya gently held him back. Instead, he wrapped his arms around his boyfriend and pulled him closer.
“Mmm,” Shane nuzzled into the curve of his neck. “I love you.”
“I love you too.” Their breathing softened and synchronized as they drifted toward sleep.
Ilya had no idea how much time had pass since they'd fallen asleep. But all of a sudden, a blaring alarm shattered the quiet. He jolted awake, heart pounding out of his chest. Fire. The fire alarm rang sharply, prompting him to quickly sit up on the bed. He glanced at Shane, who was groaning, burying his face in the pillow to escape the noise. He placed a hand on his shoulder to coax him.
"Shane, you need to get up, baby."
"Ilya?"
"Come on, sweetheart. We have to go outside."
"Why is the ceiling yelling?"
"It's okay, I'm right next to you. Grab your jacket and let's go."
He saw Shane reaching for a hoodie on the floor. Ilya found his own shirt, took Shane’s hand, and together they moved briskly toward the door.
The hall, filled with people shuffling out of their rooms in a steady pace, was buzzing with sleepy murmurs and hurried footsteps. He and Shane turned towards the stairwell when a voice called from behind them.
“Roz!”
Ilya turned to see Hazy and Bood emerging from their rooms, followed by Barrett, Harris, and Haas. Haas froze mid-step, his face pale.
“Is that—?”
The realization hit Ilya like a body check. They weren’t just evacuating for a fire, they were in the middle of a hotel, full of his own teammates. Shane was still holding onto his hand, and Ilya quickly dropped it. He turned to look at his boyfriend and that’s when he noticed what Shane was wearing. A black Centaurs hoodie with the bright red letters and numbers printed on the back: Rozanov 81. Ilya was slightly bigger than Shane so the hoodie was a little oversized on him. Ilya was sure Shane's brain hadn't really caught up to the situation yet, and he felt a dread in his stomach. He looked back at his teammates, directly at Harris, who must've read something on his face, because he resolved to get everyone to move.
“Come on, guys,” Harris urged, shuffling them towards the stairs. He stood between Luca and Ilya, and pulled them one by one to go past. “Let's get moving. We need to be outside.”
Ilya and Shane hung back slightly, allowing the rest of them to get ahead. As they made their way to the stairs, he pulled the hood over Shane's head, who didn't fight him, hoping it would hide his face enough. It would be really stupid for them to be caught right now. He placed a comforting hand onto Shane's back, and when he felt Shane relax into his touch, Ilya exhaled the breath he hadn’t realized he’d been holding.
By the time they made it outside, the rest of the team were already standing together. Coach Wiebe stood chatting with Harris, a calm but watchful expression on his face. Ilya saw their eyes flickered over to himself and Shane, filled with curiosity and unanswered questions.
He held Shane back. His mind was reeling, trying to think of whatever reasoning they could have to be together like this. He needed to think of something fast before they got to the group.
“Okay," he inhaled sharply. "Shane, how are you feeling?"
"Good," he turned to face Ilya. His cheeks still looked flushed, but his eyes weren't as hazy as earlier. "I'm okay, Ilya."
"Okay," Ilya let out a breath of relief. "We will say you are here for charity stuff. You had to come late because of the game. We were discussing business and got tired. So you just rested your eyes—”
“Ilya,” Shane interrupted.
Ilya stopped, his throat felt dry, and looked at Shane, who was looking down at the hoodie and tracing his thumb over the Centaurs logo on the front. Ilya could still see a slight blush still on his cheeks beneath the beautiful freckles he loved so much.
Shane took a deep breath before continuing, “We… can just tell them the truth. If you’re ready.” He looked at Ilya, then down at himself. “I mean, how else can we explain this?”
Ilya shook his head. “Shane, you are not thinking clearly. You're still tipsy from—"
Shane reached his hands out to place it on Ilya's shoulders, his gaze steady. “You trust them, right?” Ilya nodded. “Then I trust you.” Shane reached out, intertwining his fingers with Ilya’s. “I love you. And they’re your teammates, and your friends. If you trust them… then so do I.”
"Shane…"
"Ilya," he squeezed his shoulders lightly. "I know what I'm saying."
He grabbed Shane's hands, brought it down to his side, gave them a squeeze, and met his eyes. He knew Shane was taking a big step, and Ilya would never pressure him to come out if he wasn’t ready. His eyes searching Shane's for a signal, anything that said his boyfriend wasn't okay with this. Instead, Shane gave him a small, encouraging nod.
"We're getting married in the summer anyway. And I'm sure they'll want to celebrate that with you."He took another deep breath. "I feel safe with you, and I trust your judgment. So if you say they're good people, then I believe you."
Ilya felt a tightness in his throat, that familiar, overwhelming pressure of a love. He was so in love, it was unbelievable. “Okay,” he breathed. “If you're sure.”
As they approached, the group fell silent. All of them turned to face Shane and Ilya.
“So…” Dykstra finally broke the silence, extending his hand. “You’re Shane Hollander.” Shane shook it politely. “Nice to finally meet you. We’ve heard a lot.”
“Uh, yes. Hi,” Shane replied shyly, cheeks reddening. He had loosened the hood to reveal his face. “I’ve heard a lot about you too.”
The group was still too quiet and awkward for Ilya. “Okay, I will just say it,” he said, bluntly. “Shane is my fiance,” Ilya announced. “We are getting married this summer, and yes, we are very in love.” Ilya released Shane’s hand, wrapped an arm around his shoulder and pulled him closer to plant a dramatic kiss against his temple.
“Oh, my God, Ilya,” Shane muttered.
Silence hung in the air, the team's expressions still unreadable. Bood blinked once at them, then again, before finally breaking the silence.
"I fucking knew it! Dykstra, you owe me money!"
Everyone's face lit up and broke out into grins at the pair of them. Ilya let out a sigh of relief and matched their smiles.
“Your fucking fiance?!” Dykstra shouted. "Fuck, Roz, I can't believe you're barely saying something now."
"Congratulations, you guys," Harris' eyes were glossy, and Troy, beaming, held him tighter.
“I think we just became the gayest team in the league,” Hazy teased. “First Barrett and Harris dating, now Roz is getting married to Hollander. We're gonna need a pride-themed bus.”
“Pretty sure I can convince management to get on board with that,” Harris said.
“Man, you couldn’t wait two weeks for Harris and Troy to have their moment?” Bood added shaking his head. Laughter spread throughout the group. “Leave it to Rozanov to say ‘hold my beer’ to someone coming out.”
“Fuck you, Bood,” Ilya said, but there was no bite to his words.
Coach was also smiling as he stepped forward to shake Shane’s hand. “Well, nice to officially meet you, Shane. And congrats to both of you.”
“Thank you. Nice to meet you too.” Ilya could feel Shane physically relax, and saw him smile as he placed an arm around Ilya’s back. He tightened his arm around Shane, resisting the urge to kiss his face in front of everyone.
From the back of the group, a soft voice spoke. “Um, Mr. Hollander?" The rookie, clearly starstruck, stared. “I-I just… I'm a big fan." Haas was as bright as a tomato. Ilya was sure he's probably the only other person in the world that looked at Shane with heart eyes almost as intense as Ilya does.
Ilya's booming laugh rang throughout the parking lot. “Mr. Hollander?”
“Shut up,” Shane said, giving him a sharp poke to his stomach. “Call me Shane, Luca. You played really well tonight. I watched some of the highlights. It was awesome.” The kid looked absolutely wrecked having been complimented by his idol.
Ilya, on the other hand, couldn’t help rolling his eyes at his boyfriend. “You were out to celebrate and you watched our game?” Ilya asked, incredulous. “You are so boring, Hollander.” Shane dropped his hand from Ilya’s waist and shoved him away.
“Asshole.”
"You love me."
"I fucking don't right now."
"Mm, liar." He pulled Shane back and nestled his face into Shane's hair.
"Ugh, gross," Bood imitated gagging. "Wait," he sounded curious now. "Is this why you always ditch us after Montreal games?"
Dykstra whistled.
"I take back my old man comment from earlier," Hazy was grinning.
“By the way, Hollander. You supporting the enemy now?" Bood looked down at his hoodie. "Or are you just Rozanov's #1 cheerleader?"
"Maybe he felt bad because we lost," Hazy laughed.
They stood outside for another half an hour or so. The conversation flowed easily between Shane and his team. Most of their talk revolved around hockey, with Harris asking several questions about the summer hockey camp, curious after hearing about it from Barrett. The atmosphere was warm and friendly, and Ilya felt a deep sense of happiness and gratitude that his team was making Shane feel so welcome.
About ten minutes later, a hotel staff member approached with a calm but apologetic expression, and addressed the group.
“Hello, everyone,” the staff announced. “Thank you for being so patient with us. Good news is the fire alarm has been cleared. It turns out one of the guests accidentally set it off while toasting a bagel in their room. No fire, no danger. You’re all free to return inside. We apologize for the inconvenience. Please enjoy the rest of your stay.”
A collective wave of relief swept through the group. Ilya glanced over at Shane, who gave him a tired but genuine smile. The fire scare had brought them to make a decision that he knew hadn't been easy, but the absurdity of it all being over a bagel and a hoodie made everything feel funnier now. He felt significantly lighter than he had in the last few weeks.
The team began to file back inside, their chatter picked up as the tension faded. Ilya stayed close to Shane, his hand back on Shane’s back, guiding him. He savored the quiet comfort of just being together after everything that had happened.
Once back in his hotel room, Ilya closed the door behind them and pulled Shane gently inside. Shane sagged against him, exhaustion finally catching up. Without a word, Ilya led him to the bed, helping him slide under the covers.
“I’m glad you’re here,” Ilya murmured, tangling himself into his boyfriend.
Shane smiled against his chest. “Me too. Your team is nice.”
“Mhm.”
"Ilya?"
"Hm?"
Shane looked up to face him. "I'm happy we told them," his eyes glistened. "They made it seem… not scary like I imagined it." Ilya was gently stroking his hair as Shane sighed. "I…"
Ilya looked at him, waited for him to finish. When Shane didn't, he planted a soft kiss on his forehead. "You were very brave tonight."
"So were you. I think…"
"Shane, it is very late. Rest. You can think tomorrow."
"I think we should announce our engagement."
Ilya stopped moving. His breath hitched. Shane inhaled deeply.
"Telling your team tonight… it made me realize that this is scary, yes, but there is more to all of this. There are going to be setbacks, but also a lot of people that will accept this. Accept us. I mean, look at Scott and his boyfriend, Kip. And we were going to come out anyway. What's a few months earlier?" There was so much intensity in his voice as he continued. "I love you so much, Ilya. Being with your team, standing there beside you, talking, laughing. Having you holding me and touching me. I never realized how much I wanted all of that until tonight." Tears welled in his eyes, but he blinked them away. "I know there's still so much planning to do. But I think I can call my mom tomorrow, and we can talk to Farah together. We can put a post together on Instagram, and obviously it won't be right away, but—"
"Shane, Shane. Sweetheart, breathe." Ilya watched him take another deep breath.
Truthfully, this was a lot for them both to consider. He had wanted this moment for a long time. To be out in the open and show the world how much he and Shane loved each other. He wanted to be able to go on dates in public. To hold his boyfriend's hand, to kiss him without fear.
If it were up to Ilya, he would simply post a picture of them kissing, and a caption that said: "the love of my life for over a decade." And that would be it. The internet would break and it would be worth it.
But coming out wasn't easy. And coming out as professional hockey players who were rivals was even harder. Ilya didn't give a shit what anyone in the NHL thought, but he knew Shane did.
"Let's talk about it when you're not tired and half sober." He knew Shane was still high on the adrenaline rush of the night. He didn't want to agree if his boyfriend would regret the suggestion tomorrow.
"Ilya," he said in a tone that clearly meant the subject was not to be dropped.
"Shane, I love you. We can talk more later, okay? Let's get a few hours of sleep." Ilya pulled him up for a deep kiss, soft and reassuring, promising that the conversation wasn't over.
Shane seemed to accept this and they settled into a comfortable silence, bodies pressed close, breathing slow and steady.
"I love you so much."
The world outside faded away, leaving only the quiet intimacy of the moment. Gradually, their eyes grew heavy, and together they drifted off to sleep again.
At 6:30 AM, Ilya's alarm rang. He groaned, moving his arm to pat the space next to him, but didn't feel anything. He opened his eyes, blinking to adjust, and found it empty. He couldn't help feeling a familiar twinge of longing stirring inside. It had been a while since they've felt the need to sneak off before the other was awake. At that moment, the door to the bathroom opened, and Shane stepped out. He smiled down at Ilya and crawled onto the bed to give him a kiss.
"Good morning."
"Mm, morning. How are you awake so early?" Ilya felt he could've slept for half the day.
"I have to go back home and grab my stuff before I head to the airport." Shane was stroking his hair softly. "You should get ready."
"No," Ilya pulled him in and wrapped his legs around him. "Stay."
Shane melted, draping his arms around him. "I wish."
"Me too."
They stayed like that for a few moments longer. "Ilya," Shane's voice was soft. "I was serious, you know?" Ilya looked over, gazing into his boyfriend's eyes. "About everything I said last night." He was placed his lips lightly on Ilya's cheek. "I love you. We'll talk more later, okay?"
Ilya nodded before pulling him into a deep kiss. He really didn't want to let him go. He rolled Shane over on top of himself.
"Ilya…," he said, not pulling their lips apart.
"Hm?"
Shane pulled back briefly. "I have to go."
Ilya leaned up to capture his lips again. He placed both hands on Shane's hips, pulling him down, grinding slowly.
"Oh, God," Shane groaned into his lips. "You're killing me, Rozanov."
"Okay, okay." Ilya let go of his boyfriend. They would have plenty of time later.
As he got out of bed, Shane grabbed the Centaurs hoodie he had accidentally worn last night. "This is mine now, by the way."
Ilya laughed. "It looks sexier on you, moy lyubimy."
