First Move

Summary

Inspired by this tumblr post.

"I did," Shane and Rozanov answer simultaneously, then cut their eyes at each other, and Hayden is pretty sure he already regrets asking who made the first move, but honestly he's still trying to wrap his brain around this relationship and it seemed like the best place to start.

Notes

Author's Note: I have not read the books (yet) so this is purely based off the show. Thank you to B13_MaybeThisTime for giving it a quick look! And thanks also to my co-conspirator, N0Connections, who makes beautiful podfics and motivated me to start writing again.

Happiest of birthdays to DesignatedGrape, hope you enjoy it!

First Move

"I did," Shane and Rozanov answer simultaneously, then cut their eyes at each other, and Hayden is pretty sure he already regrets asking who made the first move, but honestly he's still trying to wrap his brain around this relationship and it seemed like the best place to start.

"I did," Shane repeats, still looking at Rozanov, his eyes getting a little wider as if to say remember? with a small tilt of his head. They're sitting next to each other on the sofa in Hayden's living room. Hayden is on the loveseat across from them, waiting for Jackie to come back and save him.

"What is this move you think was first?" Rozanov asks, in a tone of voice that sounds both skeptical and indulgent somehow.

"When we met!" Shane says, gesturing between them with one hand. "I literally came up to you first and introduced myself."

"Wait, when you met?" Hayden wonders aloud. "Like, when you first met? Wasn't that like..."

But they do not hear Hayden. Of course.

"That was not a move!" Rozanov says, maybe a little too loud considering Jackie just got the baby to sleep upstairs. "That was just normal introduction. People do that every day."

"I don't," Shane states plainly, and Rozanov... makes a face that Hayden can't quite interpret.

"Okay. Hang on," Hayden cuts in, getting their attention back. "When was this, exactly?" He thought he knew when they'd first met, it was like way before the draft, even. Which means...

"Before we played each other at the International Prospect Cup," Shane says.

Hayden feels his eyebrows rise all the way to his hairline without his permission. "You got together when you were seventeen?" Okay, now he's being too loud.

"No, no." Rozanov waves a hand at him. "Is just when we first met. And was not a move." He turns back to Shane, smacking that same hand into his own chest. "I made first move, at the draft."

"No you didn't! There were no moves that time, unless you think racing on stationary bikes is a move?"

"No, after."

"What after?"

"Hollander. You think I get all touchy-feely with your fingers because I don't know how to hold water bottle?"

"At the draft...?" Hayden whispers, mostly to himself because the others are not paying attention to him at all. He's not even going to contemplate what they were doing with their fingers.

"That wasn't a..." Shane blinks. "You were making a move?"

Rozanov throws his hands up. "You see how much work this was? I had to arrange whole commercial just so I could try again."

That makes Hayden's brain stop spinning for a moment and he clocks the tiny twitch of Shane's lips, the almost smile.

"He did do that," Shane admits, ducking his head.

"Are you talking about that—that CCM commercial?" Hayden asks. "Like, the commercial that basically launched the whole rivalry thing at the start of your whole careers?"

Shane glances up at him, but just sort of shrugs, head still down, and Hayden knows when he's feeling a little awkward. Hayden always tries his best to make Shane feel comfortable; he knows when he's being too invasive and when to stop pushing, he really does, but... this is so much information that Shane has never been able to share with him before.

Rozanov clearly has no problem oversharing. "Yes, and is where I made next big move—"

"Ilya—"

"—in the shower."

Shane's eyes fall shut and his head tips back, landing on the soft cushion behind him, his mouth a tight line. Hayden's brain is stuck on— "...in the shower?"

"Was very hot and steamy," Rozanov continues, with a wicked grin at Shane.

"He does not need to know what happened in the shower," Shane tells him, sternly.

Hayden doesn't disagree with that... but, fuck, now he's curious.

He won't ask, though.

Probably.

Not right now.

"So, you guys fucked in the shower? At a commercial shoot? When you were eighteen?!"

Whoops.

"No!" Shane nearly yells, while Rozanov cackles, and seriously they are going to wake the baby. Hayden is so glad the rest of his kids are spending the night at Jackie's parents' house tonight. He does not have the mental capacity to dad right now.

"Mm, then what happened, Hollander? Did you make a move then?"

"I gave you my room number, didn't I?"

"I asked for room number! Still counts as my move."

"Oh, so it was after the shoot," Hayden says, and he's totally fine right now, this is not blowing his mind at all. "When you were eighteen."

Shane blinks his attention away from Rozanov and back to Hayden. "Uh. Yeah," he says, eyes straying to the ceiling. "That was the first time."

"And next time, I gave you my room number. Another move."

"When was the next time," Hayden asks, before his brain can even catch up.

"All-Star game, rookie year," Rozanov says, smug smile on his face. Except... it's not only smug. The way he looks at Shane... Hayden knows that look. He's seen that look on his own face, in pictures of himself when staring at Jackie.

"Yeah, you know Scott Hunter heard you," Shane admonishes (Hayden knows his admonishing tone).

"Oh, he definitely heard you," Rozanov says, and that look is all smug.

Shane is glaring and shaking his head. "I'm still not convinced he doesn't know about us. He's probably known this whole time."

Rozanov's face softens, and he opens his mouth, probably to comfort Shane, but Hayden, unfortunately, blurts out, "Did you guys know about Hunter?!" Then he waves his hands in the air when they turn to look at him. "No, don't answer that, it's not important. You guys are killing me right now. I thought—like, I thought—"

Hayden puts his head in his hands and feels himself slide off the loveseat and onto the floor, his legs sticking straight out in front of him. He tilts to the right, the fabric of his t-shirt twisting around his torso as it pulls against the rough edge of the loveseat until he's lying sideways on the floor.

"Hayd...?" Shane asks, cautiously, hesitantly, his voice so tentative and... and, fuck, and scared, maybe? Fuck, Hayden hates that.

"I'm good!" he says, face still buried in his hands. "We're good. I just—I just need a second." He breathes deeply, wonders when he washed his hands last, then pulls them away from his face to look over at Shane. They'd moved the coffee table into the corner out of the way, so there's just the baby play mat between him and Shane (and Rozanov), the rainbow arch and dangling clouds not quite obstructing his view. Shane is watching him. "I thought it was just, like, casual? When you first started?"

"It was," they both say, again in perfect unison, frowning down at him.

"No," Hayden replies, sighing loudly into the carpet, wondering when he last vacuumed. "No, no, no, that is not what I'm hearing right now because at some point, pretty early on, you exchanged phone numbers and started texting. Like, regularly."

"Not really regularly," Shane argues.

"Was after All-Star fuck," Rozanov says at the same time, "and I was the one who put my number in his phone! Another move!"

"Oh my god," Hayden groans, rolling until he is completely facedown in the carpet, vacuuming be damned. That for sure feels like a cheerio stuck to his cheek. Shane and Ilya (because he is Ilya now, fuck, this has been going on too long to keep calling him Rozanov all the time) do not even notice him.

"See? I made the moves, Shane!"

"What is going on in here?" Jackie whisper-shouts, less as a scolding and more as a reminder to everyone to keep their voices down. Hayden flings his arm out in their direction without lifting his face. Jackie must look at them, because then Shane speaks.

"Ilya thinks he made the first move."

"Ooh!" Jackie hums in delight, stepping over Hayden's body to settle herself on the loveseat. "Yes, details please."

"No more details," Hayden mutters, carpet fibers and a Barbie shoe sticking to his lips. He turns his head to blow it away. Oh, hey, there she is, he thinks, looking under the loveseat and spotting Elsa. The girls lost her a while ago.

Ilya is busy listing all the moves he's made. "The fingers, and the commercial, and the shower, and the phone number, and, and! I was always first to text."

"You were not."

"I was! And it took years, Shane."

"Yeeears," Hayden screams into the carpet, a muffled, strangled cry. He grabs Elsa, and her shoe, and sits up to face them, wiping the cheerio off his face with his shoulder. "Oh my god. Jackie. They were just babies. It's too fucking cute, I can't handle it."

They all stare at him.

"What?" Jackie asks, leaning forward so she can see his face.

"This whole time," Hayden starts softly, "the whole time," his voice rises,"this whole thing started because they were just—they were just, fuck, they were just—they were both just a stupid teenager with a crush on a boy!"

"What?" Shane protests.

"What? No, no, I did not have crush, Russians do not do this."

"Yes. Yes." Hayden nods, emphatically, and points a finger at each of them. "You made a million moves on him," he says to Ilya.

"Ah! So we all agree that I made all the moves, yes?" Ilya looks only at Shane.

Shane looks back, placidly. "I will admit that you made... a lot of moves." He leans back into the sofa, crossing his arms over his chest, his lips twitching at the corners. "Just not the first move."

"Does not count!" Ilya cries, but Hayden talks over him.

"Yes. Yes, it absolutely counts. You!" He points at Shane now. "You, what? You went up to him on the ice before the game and said 'hi, nice to meet you'? No," he goes on, not giving Shane a chance to answer, "no, you did not because you told me the first time you ever spoke to him he was smoking a cigarette and you made this face—" Hayden tries to mimic the face Shane had made that Hayden had thought was disgust, and also disbelief that an athlete would smoke, but is now wondering if it was actually a 'how do I get the guy I'm probably in love with to quit smoking?' face.

"I've never made that face in my life."

"So, you had to go find him outside," Hayden continues, without acknowledging the interruption. "You specifically went looking for him, so you could introduce yourself—I'm sorry, Rozanov, but I have to side with Shane here. He made the first move."

"Hah!" Shane smiles, gleefully.

"Because he had a massive crush," Hayden finishes.

Shane's smile starts to drop, his mouth opening to protest again, but this time Jackie comes to Hayden's aid.

"Yeah," she says, in a placating tone, "I mean, I don't think I've ever actually seen Shane with a crush on someone before?" She tips her head, looking upward for a moment as if thinking, then drops her gaze back to them with a smile. "But that does sound like something only a Shane Hollander with a crush would do."

Shane's mouth snaps shut, he's shaking his head, but his lips are twitching at the corners again, and he's glancing sideways at his boyfriend (fuck, his boyfriend — Hayden is getting used to it).

Rozanov—Ilya is watching him back, that fucking Hayden Pike on his wedding day look on his face again. His smile is soft and his voice is teasing when he sing-songs, "You had a crush on me."

Shane flushes, a deep pink, and huffs the gentlest Fuck off that Hayden has ever heard.

"Like you can talk, man," Hayden says to Ilya. "You just listed out all the ways you pursued him for—years, was it? Oh yeah, no, Russians don't have crushes. Right." He turns to Jackie then. "Babe, they were just dumb kids. And they fucking fell in love."

It's too fucking cute, Hayden really can't handle it. He crawls back down to his friend the carpet, scoots himself onto the play mat to stare up at the soothing rainbow and fluffy clouds. He might need a nap after this.
