Operation Hollanov

by orangebeetroot

Summary

In which Shane and Ilya's teammates are observant, but not as observant as they think they are.

Extract:

“So wait, what does that mean?” Hayden said, and Wyatt could see the cogs turning in his head.

“I think it means we have two thirty-year-old men on our hands who haven’t figured out how to admit their feelings to each other,” Wyatt laughed. “And we’ve somehow decided they’re our responsibility.”

“Fuck,” Hayden said, putting his head in his hands. “We’re gonna need to get them together, aren’t we?”

Notes

This is extremely unserious fluff. There is some obvious canon divergence but I think this is in the spirit of canon for the most part.

I haven't quite got my head round the characterisation of the Centaurs but hopefully none of this feels too ooc.

Operation Hollanov

“Do you think Shane knows how obvious he’s being?” J.J. skated up to Hayden and nudged him.

Hayden looked over at where Shane was hovering near the group of kids, watching Ilya enthusiastically explain (and more enthusiastically demonstrate) a drill to them. The look on his face could only be described as lovesick.

“I guarantee you he’s in denial about the whole thing,” Hayden replied with a sigh.

The two men exchanged a pointed look. It had taken a while for both of them to get used to the fact that their best friend and Rozanov – who Shane now insisted on referring to as Ilya – were friends, let alone friends who wanted to start a charity together and spend a week each summer in close proximity. Never mind the fact that Rozanov had, for reasons nobody could fully explain, decided to transfer to Ottawa after his contract was up for renewal, which meant the two of them were now spending a lot more than a week every summer together, grabbing dinner together on random weekdays just because Ilya happened to be in town.

Hayden had found it weird at first, puzzling, but then Shane had come out to the team, and he’d started to actually pay attention to how Shane acted around Rozanov, and something had clicked into place.

His best friend had a massive crush on Ilya Rozanov.

His fears had only been confirmed when a few months ago, grabbing a drink with J.J. after a Montreal-Ottawa game, J.J. had looked at him somewhat sheepishly and said, “I’m not trying to gossip, but have you noticed anything weird about how Shane acts every time we play Ottawa?”

Hayden would hardly describe Shane as the most relaxed person he had ever met, but it was noticeably worse when they were about to play Ottawa. He was what could only be described as jittery.

“It’s impossible not to notice,” Hayden had replied.

“You’re gonna think I’m crazy,” J.J. laughed. “But I think our capitaine might have a thing for Rozanov.”

“I’ve been thinking the exact same thing!”

It only became more obvious after that point, and Hayden wondered how he’d failed to spot it beforehand. How long had Shane had this crush? He wondered if Shane had been aware of it when he was seeing Boston Lily – it kind of made sense now, thinking about it, that he’d needed extra distraction when he knew he was seeing Rozanov, before he’d been comfortable with his sexuality.

A week ago, J.J. had been round for dinner and the conversation had turned to the camp next week. Shane had mentioned offhandedly that Rozanov would be staying in his guest bedroom when he came to visit.

“It’s no good,” J.J. had said, sounding almost sad for his friend. “I’m not surprised he invited Rozanov to stay, he’d probably take any chance to spend time with him, but he’s gonna get hurt.”

“Imagine if Rozanov brings some girl home,” Hayden grimaced. “Shane would be devastated.”

“You don’t think he would? Even Rozanov surely knows not to rub it in his face like that.”

“He seems pretty oblivious to the crush, from what I can tell,” Hayden replied. He was pretty sure he’d seen Rozanov actively flirting with Shane on multiple occasions, which wasn’t in itself that shocking – Rozanov would flirt with an inanimate object – but would be pretty cruel if he knew how much it could turn into stringing Shane along. Because he was making an effort to like Rozanov for Shane’s sake, and to make the camps more bearable, Hayden had to put it down to ignorance.

“That is no good,” J.J. shook his head. “We need to do something, for Shane.”

“Do what?”

“I don’t know, maybe we should set him up with someone!”

It turned out J.J. and Hayden had exactly two other openly gay friends between them, but one of them, Tim, a friend of Hayden’s from high school who still lived in Montreal, was open to the idea of being set up with someone, and free the following week. Hayden hadn’t mentioned Shane by name, figuring he might not be comfortable with the idea, but hoped that he would be open to it.

Watching Shane now, staring pathetically at Ilya interacting with the kids, he decided it may as well be time.

When the kids scattered, ready to go work on the drill, Hayden took his opportunity, skating over to Shane, who was taking a break by the edge of the rink.

“Hey man,” he said, looking around to check they weren’t within earshot of anyone who Shane wasn’t out to.

“Hey,” said Shane. “Do you want to do some passing drills with them next? I was thinking of wrapping up with a game today but we’ve got time for another –”

“Sure!” Hayden said, cutting him off. “Yeah, I can do some passing in a sec.”

Shane looked mildly annoyed, and Hayden kicked himself. He wanted Shane as relaxed as possible.

“I was actually gonna ask you something unrelated to the camp,” he tried.

“Oh, okay.” Shane looked suspicious.

“Look, I know you didn’t want to make a big thing of it, but I’ve got this friend from school, Tim, he’s gay, and he’s single, and I think you guys would really hit it off. I was wondering if you’d be up for me passing on your number?”

A look that could only be described as horror passed over Shane’s face, and as if he couldn’t help himself, he flashed a quick glance in Ilya’s direction. This was worse than Hayden realized.

“I, uh, that’s, I mean… I don’t think I’m really a blind date kind of person.”

“Tim’s really nice,” said Hayden, which was true, although nice felt, after he’d said it, like a weak choice of words.

“I’m sure he is,” Shane agreed, still looking horrified. “But, um, I’m so busy at the moment, and I don’t think…” He trailed off and looked at his feet, then back at Hayden. “I really appreciate you being supportive Hayd. It’s just, I’m not really looking to date right now.”

Hayden nodded, accepting defeat – probably too quickly, he would think later. “If you’re sure man. Let me know if you change your mind, though.”

Ilya, who had apparently overheard some of the conversation – Hayden kicked himself for not noticing him headed in their direction – skated over and clapped Shane on the shoulder. “You don’t want to date pretty Montreal boy?”

Ilya looked like he thought it was funny, and Hayden felt himself getting annoyed. Why did this man, obviously completely uninterested in Shane, have to be the first person he’d ever seen his best friend like?

“No, I don’t.” Shane sounded annoyed. “Though maybe I should.”

Ilya grinned at him, and skated away, giving Hayden a look of amusement as he whizzed off.

Hayden turned back to Shane. “Really man, if you change your mind…”

Ilya was doing his usual obnoxious post-goal celebration, blowing kisses to the crowd and circling the rink. It was the kind of thing that, watching from a distance, had once convinced Wyatt that he was an asshole, and had made the experience of having Ilya Rozanov transfer to Ottawa a shock in more ways than one.

From near the centre of the rink, Shane Hollander glared at him. Turning his attention away from the crowd, Ilya blew Hollander a particularly exaggerated kiss. Hollander looked like he wanted to punch him.

Wyatt knew they were friends, had seen it firsthand two summers in a row now, but it was still a little difficult to believe.

What was equally difficult to believe, if not more so, was that Ilya Rozanov was completely, head over heels in love with Shane Hollander. Okay, maybe not in love, that was a little dramatic. But the heads over heels part was obvious, now that Wyatt had seen them interact on enough occasions – and learnt to his surprise, a few months ago, that Ilya liked men as well as women.

Everyone apart from Troy – who had known for longer, it turned out – and Harris – who apparently just knew – had thought he was joking at first. Wyatt had actually turned round and tried to scold Ilya for making light of LGBT+ identities, especially in front of Troy and Harris. But Ilya had been, as it turned out, dead serious.

After that, the pieces had come together.

Ilya’s reputation as a womanizer had turned out to be basically non-existent, based off of how he acted around his Ottawa team at least. He would still flirt with anything, sure, but it never seemed to go further than that. And Ilya flirted with Shane in a particular way, practically shooting heart eyes at the other man – who, for his part, barely seemed to notice when Ilya was flirting with him. Ilya was also attentive to Shane in a way that he wasn’t with anyone else. When they went out to dinner as a group, to celebrate the camp being done, he’d chosen a place that worked with Shane’s diet without being asked. He brought ginger ales in his kit bag for Shane during the breaks. And more than anything else, Ilya was always looking at him, when he thought no-one – least of all Shane – was watching. Wyatt couldn’t believe he hadn’t spotted this sooner, but he guessed he’d been blinded by believing Ilya was straight.

Now, though, he had the worse problem, having to watch Ilya, week after week, do a terrible job of hiding his hopeless set of feelings for his straight best friend.

From what he’d seen of him, and the amount they’d gotten to know each other over the summers, Shane wasn’t the type of guy to lead anyone on, at least. Wyatt knew that Shane had invited Ilya to stay in his spare room during the most recent camp, which was nice of him, but also practical, in a way that Wyatt was learning was very Shane Hollander. The two of them needed to sort some logistical stuff to do with the charity and the behind-the-scenes of the camps, so it made sense for them to be in close proximity while the camp was happening. Ilya had relayed all of this matter-of-factly when Wyatt had, hopefully subtly, probed him a little about the invitation and how he felt about it.

And if Ilya wanted to torture himself by proximity to a man he couldn’t have, well, he was an adult and that was his prerogative.

Wyatt tried to feel okay about that, but couldn’t help but feel a stab of concern for his friend.

Hayden, J.J., and Wyatt met up after their next game, a couple of months later, at a Montreal bar. The three of them had got to know each other pretty well through the camps, but they didn’t go out of their ways to hang out socially as a regular rule. Hayden had organized this, insisting that there was something important that they needed to talk about. It had been a late game and the Centaurs had a hotel for the night, so Wyatt didn’t have to head back to Ottawa until the next morning, and had happily agreed to a drink.

The three of them were crammed into a corner booth, beers in hand. They had mostly been making small talk about the game – it had been a close one, which considering where the Centaurs had been only a year ago, felt pretty fucking good.

By the third drink, though, Wyatt’s curiosity overcame him.

“So what was the important thing we needed so urgently to discuss?” he said.

Hayden looked weirdly guilty. “Okay,” he started. “I’m not sure I’m being a great friend here. But I’m not sure what else to do. I need you to find a way to get Rozanov to stop –” He gestured awkwardly. “– being so Rozanov around Shane. Maybe just for a bit.”

Wyatt laughed, confused. “What the hell does that mean?”

Hayden and J.J. exchanged a look.

“Please don’t tell anyone this,” Hayden said earnestly. “I feel like I’m breaking Shane’s trust but also, he’s seemed really low recently and I think this is causing it, and we just want him to be happy.”

Wyatt was even more confused. “Okay… Whatever it is, I won’t tell anyone.”

Hayden looked slightly relieved. “Yeah, I know, you’re a good guy, I trust you.” He took a swig of his beer. “God, this is probably gonna sound so fucking wild to you.”

“I’m sure whatever I’m imagining right now is so much weirder,” Wyatt said, though he wasn’t really imagining anything. He was mostly just befuddled.

“Shane’s gay,” Hayden said, with a heavy sigh. Wyatt understood now why they felt weird about sharing that without Shane’s express permission. Hayden continued, “And we’re pretty much convinced that he’s in love with Rozanov. Which is obviously a lost cause. But Rozanov keeps flirting with him, and spending time with him in close proximity and it’s clearly just making everything so much worse for Shane. We keep trying to set him up with people and he is not responding in any way. So you need to find a way to get Rozanov – Ilya – to back off, without, like, embarrassing Shane. We don’t want to make their friendship weird, or expose Shane, or anything.”

Wyatt took a second to process all of that information. “You’re telling me Shane… likes Ilya?”

“Yeah.” Hayden looked genuinely despairing.

“It makes no sense to us either,” J.J. added.

Wyatt froze for a moment, processing, then burst out laughing.

“What?” the others said, in unison, clearly not expecting this reaction.

“You guys have no idea how funny this is.”

“What?” Hayden repeated.

“The boys are gonna love this.” Wyatt was grinning at them now. “We’ve spent the last few months trying to figure out what to do about the fact that Rozy has an unrequited thing for Shane.”

“WHAT?” Both Hayden and J.J. looked genuinely baffled.

“You’re not being serious,” Hayden said.

“Yeah, Ilya’s bi, he told us a while ago. It was after that that I figured it out, he’s completely got a thing for Shane. It’s so obvious once you know to look for it.”

J.J. was laughing now, though still looked incredulous. “Well, what do you know. That is not where I expected this evening to go.”

OPERATION HOLLANOV

Wyatt:             Hi everyone! Most of you know what this is about. Shane and Ilya have been acting weird and mopey for months and we’ve figured out they’ve got the hots for each other, but are oblivious/won’t admit it for some reason, and we’re fed up and need to do something about it

J.J.:                   Aye aye capitaine!

Hayden:           I would just like the record to state that I hate that this is happening

Harris:             Okay, so I’ve been brainstorming ideas

Troy:                Of course you have

Bood:              Let him speak!

Bood:              Also I would like the record to state that I am extremely here for this, especially if it’ll get Rozy to stop acting like a teenager at practice

Bood:              And also I love scheming

Harris:             So, there’s a number of ways we could go about this

Harris:             There’s the classic forced proximity. Find a way to contrive an event where we all end up in the same hotel. But oh no! There’s been an issue with the room booking and they need to share

Hayden:           Ilya has literally stayed in Shane’s house before – if nothing happened then, I’m not convinced we can make it happen with this

Hayden:           Also having roomed with Shane for years, I can tell you he will just pull out his extremely sexless pajamas, read for an hour, and go straight to sleep

Bood:              What if we just get them drunk?

J.J.:                   I like this idea

Hayden:           Again, may I introduce you to Shane Hollander

Wyatt:             Surely he’s not that impossible?

Harris:             Okay hold on, I have other ideas

Harris:             Option two, we make them both jealous

Harris:             Like, what if Wyatt, you say you’ve heard from Hayden that Shane is seeing someone? And you guys could say the same about Ilya

Wyatt:             That could backfire, though

Harris:             Hmm yeah it is a riskier one

Hayden:           What’s option three?

Harris:             We say fuck it, sacrifice our dignity and maybe our friendships, and stage an intervention?

Shane thought he and Ilya were doing a pretty good job of hiding their relationship. It wasn’t easy – in fact, the distance and the strain of keeping everything secret had been starting to really weigh on him over the past few months. Hayden and J.J. had noticed that he was a bit down, but since he couldn’t talk to either of them about why, he’d settled for weak excuses about being tired and run down and stressed about figuring out the charity or the logistics for the camps.

He was amazed, though, that they hadn’t been found out by anyone yet. It was difficult, especially during the week of the summer when they ran the camps, and were in close proximity all day, and he had to look at Ilya and pretend that he didn’t want to jump him right there and then.

Years of hiding their relationship from the world had taught them some things, Shane guessed. He wasn’t sure they were things worth learning.

It helped, also, that Ilya had always been obnoxious, and so any flirting he threw Shane’s way – which Ilya apparently couldn’t help doing – would be read as just that, and Shane could roll his eyes, and pretend he didn’t notice it, and hide the secret butterflies that he got watching his boyfriend goof around on the ice.

In fact, much to Shane’s annoyance, he was apparently being so subtle that Hayden and J.J. had decided he absolutely needed setting up with someone. It had started with Tim from Montreal, a nice man that Hayden had gone to school with, who worked as a math teacher and did charity cycles in his free time. Shane had made some excuse about being busy, and Ilya, who overheard part of the conversation, had teased him relentlessly about it later that evening, pausing a blowjob to ask Shane, “Would you rather Tim do this to you?”

Over the next few months, both Hayden and J.J. took turns offering Shane a roster of men to go out with, from friends of friends, to men they’d randomly met on nights out (Shane was starting to wonder if they were both just wandering up to strangers and asking “Are you gay? My friend is single”). He turned them all down, with increasingly feeble excuses.

At the beginning of March, though, he realized that it had been over two months since either of them had tried to set him up with someone. He figured maybe they had finally given up.

Until Hayden decided that he was hosting a dinner party. Shane had had dinner round Hayden’s house plenty of times. Hayden and Jackie had hosted the team a bunch too, to watch hockey matches or for summer socials. But there was something about a dinner party that was incredibly unlike Hayden. And if that wasn’t enough, the guestlist – what Shane knew of it, at least – was eclectic in a way that was making his brain go into overdrive.

“He’s invited Zane Boodram?” he asked Ilya. “And Troy and Harris?”

“Yeah, I think so,” Ilya shrugged, less perturbed by this than Shane was.

“But I didn’t even know they knew each other.”

Ilya shrugged again. “Hayden knows Wyatt from the camps. Maybe they became friends. Probably he is looking for a coach to help improve his hockey.”

Shane rolled his eyes at that. “That’s a weird group, though, don’t you think?”

“Maybe,” said Ilya, sounding disinterested. “They are nice guys, it will be fun evening, I don’t know why this is bothering you.”

“Because!” Shane said. “If he’s invited them, then who else might he have invited?”

“Are you jealous that Hayden has other friends? Should I be worried?”

“No,” Shane said, annoyed. “But I am worried he might be trying to set me up with someone again.”

“I thought you said that had stopped?” Ilya looked at him quizzically.

“I thought so,” Shane sighed. “I thought they got bored and took the hint when I kept saying no. But maybe he’s just… changing tack. I don’t know, putting a random group of people together, so it’ll seem less obvious that he’s invited a specific person for me to meet.”

Ilya abandoned the green onion he was slicing to cross the room and put his hands on Shane’s shoulders. “I do not think Hayden knows how to think that much,” he said, lifting his thumb to stroke Shane’s cheek. “And I would hope that you can handle one evening in the proximity of another gay man.”

Shane ignored the tease, and said sadly, “I hate the fact that Hayden and J.J. have been so supportive of me being gay, have been putting all this effort into getting me a boyfriend, and I can’t share this part of my life with them.”

“I know, I hate it too,” Ilya replied, pulling Shane into a hug. “It will be okay though. I think it is just a dinner.” He kissed Shane’s forehead. “And our dinner is almost ready, so sit down and let me feed you and stop worrying.”

Shane arrived at Hayden’s early, which he always did, with a bottle of wine in his hand.

Jackie greeted him at the door and pulled him into a warm hug. “Come on in! The others aren’t here yet but take a seat, Hayd’s just finishing up in the kitchen.”

The house smelled lovely. It was also unusually quiet. “Where are the kids?” he asked.

“Oh, they’re staying with my parents during the break. I think it’s been nice for them to get some quality time.”

Jackie ushered him into the kitchen-dining area, taking the bottle of wine to the fridge. Shane stood in the doorway. The table was set already with – he counted – eleven places. That was everyone he knew was coming, he was pretty sure, assuming that Bood and Wyatt would be bringing their wives. He felt himself – slightly – relax. Maybe this was just a weird hockey dinner. Not a blind date ambush.

Jackie came back with a glass of wine from a bottle they’d already had open. Hayden looked up from where he was wrestling with the oven settings.

“Hey man, good to see you!”

“Good to see you too,” Shane said, feeling – to his surprise, considering how much he’d been dreading this evening – like he might actually mean it.

The three of them made comfortable small talk as Hayden finished off the food. The others also slowly trickled in – J.J. arrived first, followed by Wyatt, Lisa, Bood, and Cassie who had driven over together. Troy and Harris rocked up a little later. And finally Ilya – who had the least far to go, considering he’d been at Shane’s house getting ready with him – just as the food was being put on the table. Shane could tell Hayden was a little bit annoyed, but Jackie greeted Ilya with a smile and handed him the last glass of wine.

Jackie had asked Shane if he’d help put the food out, so he was the last to take a seat. The empty seat ended up being right next to Ilya, which he certainly wasn’t complaining about, although he felt a little flushed by the idea of being able to play footsie under the table, or put their hands on each other’s knees. He was going to have to exercise additional powers of restraint tonight.

Strange company aside, it was actually nice to do something social for once. Most of the conversation revolved around hockey, although occasionally someone would attempt to change the subject, and Jackie would shoot them a grateful glance.

They finished dinner, Shane helped Hayden clear the plates, and everyone moved into the living room after a round of wine refills.

Again, Shane was last into the room, having been on wine refill duty, and when he entered, the only available seat was next to Ilya on the couch. He took it, trying to resist the instinctive urge to melt into his boyfriend’s side, and rest his head on his shoulder. The pleasant light buzz of a few glasses of wine wasn’t helping. He avoided making eye contact with Ilya, knowing that if he looked at him, it would make it that much harder to resist.

Everyone was suddenly, he realized, being oddly quiet.

He was about to interject with an inane comment about the interior design – he noticed they had put some new art up – when Hayden awkwardly cleared his throat.

“So,” he said, casting his eyes around the room. Then he looked at Shane. And then at Ilya. “There’s actually something we wanted to talk to you guys about, tonight.”

Shane had no idea what was happening. He wanted to look at Ilya, but everyone was looking at him now, so he couldn’t.

“You’ve both been acting weird for months now. Maybe longer.”

Fuck. Shane’s heart sank. Had they been found out? Was this some kind of intervention? Were their friends about to demand that they break up? This was his worst nightmare.

Wyatt jumped in. “You’re both completely miserable, and honestly? It’s bumming the rest of us out. And we’ve figured out why.”

Shane allowed himself to look at Ilya now, and found the same confusion – and panic – reflected back at him.

Wyatt looked at Hayden, who continued, “This may come as a shock to both of you, but you’ve obviously both got feelings for each other.”

He took a breath, at which point J.J. jumped in. “And for our sakes you need to get it together and admit that to each other! This stupide pining has to end.”

Shane could only stare back, wide-eyed, trying to process everything that had just been said.

He vaguely heard Harris speaking. “We tried to think of a better way to do this, I swear we did. None of our other ideas seemed to work.”

“When we figured out neither of you was straight, that’s when we put two and two together,” Wyatt added. “But it’s been months and you’re both so oblivious!”

Shane felt movement beside him. He turned and realized that Ilya was laughing. Hysterically.

His own shock prevented him from joining in. This felt simultaneously like his biggest nightmare and his biggest relief. No-one in this room was telling them they had to stop, that this thing between them was a terrible idea and had to end. The opposite, in fact. They were surrounded by a roomful of people who had, albeit in maybe the worst possible way, organized this entire evening to try and get them together.

Hayden, meanwhile, looked incredibly alarmed at Ilya’s reaction, even slightly angry. He was looking at Wyatt as if he expected him to have answers. Meanwhile Wyatt just looked completely confused.

Eventually Ilya stopped laughing. He put his hand on Shane’s knee, and looked at him. “It looks like all of our friends want us to be boyfriends.”

“I guess so,” Shane managed to reply.

“What do you think about this?” Ilya leaned in close. “Will you be my boyfriend Shane Hollander?”

Shane glared at him.

Ilya turned to address the room. “I think you have misread the situation, everyone. Shane Hollander does not want to be my boyfriend.”

“I did not–” Shane began to protest, then stopped himself, remembering the situation they were in.

“Oh my god,” Hayden said weakly. He looked at Shane, mortified. “You’ve – you’ve been together this entire time, haven’t you?”

OPERATION HOLLANOV

Hayden:           So that was incredibly embarrassing. I can’t believe we misread that so badly

Hayden:           But thanks for coming everyone

Hayden:           Genuinely we should do this again

Harris:             If you think about it, it was technically a success!

Harris:             I think we should be proud of ourselves

Bood:              I like that positive thinking!

J.J.:                   I’m just glad we can stop trying to set Shane up with people. I was running out of options

Harris:             When do you guys think it started?

Wyatt:             Good point, we should’ve asked them!

*Wyatt Hayes added Ilya Rozanov and Shane Hollander to the chat*

Shane:             Uh, hello everyone?

Wyatt:             We need to know – were we right at any point? When did you guys figure it out? We first started noticing this almost a year ago

Ilya:                 Shane has been in love with me since rookie season

Shane:             …

Harris:             No but seriously?

Shane:             … That is technically when we got together

Hayden:           I need an eye test
