Troy Barrett stared at his phone and tried to resist the overwhelming urge to slam it straight into the wall. And then stomp on it. And then maybe run it over with Roz’s obnoxious orange Lamborghini for good measure.

“I hate my fucking life,” he muttered.

Rozanov, as obnoxious as his car, cackled beside him. Of course he was finding the whole thing funny. The internet was hysterical, ESPN was writing articles accusing them of homophobia - or possibly of being gay lovers, it was kind of unclear, - Troy himself was about ten minutes away from a full on mental breakdown, and Harris Drover was pissed, but nope, none of that bothered Roz in the slightest. If anything, he seemed to be thriving.

“This is amazing,” he said, proving Troy entirely correct. Troy contemplated the likelihood of escaping jail time if he throttled Roz right then and there in Harris’s office. Probably not very high, but it might be worth it just to shut him up.

“How,” he said instead, gritting his teeth, “could anything about this possibly be amazing?’

“You don’t think it's a little bit funny?’

“No.” He waited for Rozanov to fill the silence, but the other man had apparently made it his life’s mission to be as irritating as possible in every situation imaginable and said nothing, just smirked at Troy. Troy glared back, wondering how the internet would react if he committed a murder suicide with his captain. Given the captain in question was Ilya Rozanov, he figured most people would probably understand.

“Fine,” Troy said eventually. “You think it’s hilarious that we’re sitting here in Harris’s office waiting for him to come in and yell at us for making the entire hockey community think we’re homophobic and, like, hate criming Scott Hunter for fun on our days off.”

“Some of them think we’re lovers,” Roz offered helpfully. As that was not actually at all helpful, Troy decided to ignore him and focus on breathing techniques. This was a valuable strategy for dealing with Rozanov, Troy had learned since joining the Centaurs. 

Unfortunately Rozanov didn't seem to give a single fuck about being dealt with. He poked Troy in the side and said, “Come on Barrett, objectively is fucking hilarious.”

Troy turned to him incredulously, and something must have been showing on his face because Roz held his hands up, laughing.

“Okay, you're pissed, I understand, you don't want to look bad in front of your boy Harris-” Troy spluttered and coughed out something incoherent at that but Roz pressed on undaunted, “-but - stop choking, you're fine - but you are forgetting we are not actually homophobic. We are gay, remember? People on the internet are freaking out because they think we went to gay bar to be homophobic there when we actually went there to be gay. It's a little bit funny, no?”

Troy chose to move past that “your boy” comment and considered the rest of it. He supposed Roz had a point, much as he hated to admit it. Ever since he had picked up his phone this morning and been immediately bombarded by an influx of notifications from what felt like anyone who had ever thought about Troy, from randoms on social media to old teammates he hadn't heard from in months, to the short, ominous message from Harris telling him to head directly to Harris’s office for a ‘mandatory social media meeting’ when he got to the rink, Troy had felt as though he was standing in a room which was burning down around him. Of course it didn't actually matter what strangers on the internet thought about him, but it stung all the same to be faced with the harsh reality that most hockey fans had such a low opinion of him and Roz. He couldn't even blame them; he knew the type of guy he had been in Toronto, and, as uncomfortable as it made him now, he knew that guy actually might have gone into gay bars just to hassle the queer clientele there if Dallas Kent had ever suggested it. 

But he had wanted it to be different in Ottawa. He didn't like who he had been in Toronto - insecure, self-hating, so terrified of being seen as gay that he had followed Dallas Kent around like a lapdog, regurgitating all his bullshit on cue instead of ever standing on his own two feet and speaking his own mind. So, no, he couldn’t blame hockey fans for taking a photograph of him leaving the Kingfisher with Roz and interpreting it in the worst possible light. Still, he had wanted to be someone better in Ottawa, someone his mother would be proud of. Someone who maybe the fans would be proud of, who little kids would have posters of in their bedrooms and look up to.

He was distracted from his spiraling by Harris bursting through the door to the office, bringing with him a waft of apple-scented air. Troy couldn't help perking up a little, despite himself. Harris was always so easy to talk to, genuinely kind and impossibly cheerful. He was the type of person Troy wished he could be more like, someone who never seemed to stop smiling, someone who made the whole room feel a few degrees warmer just by entering it. Troy usually had the opposite effect.

“You two better have a good explanation for this,” Harris snapped, leaning against his desk and staring them down. Not smiling.

Fuck, Troy thought dismally. There it was. Even Harris, who was normally so bright it put the sun to shame, wasn't immune to Troy’s specific brand of self-destructiveness. It was almost a talent.

“We have perfect explanation,” Roz said chirpily with a grin that was probably supposed to be charming. It might have been charming, but Troy couldn't take his eyes off Harris. He had never seen him look so closed off, and it was Troy’s fault. He - and Roz, to be fair - but it was mostly Troy, was the one responsible for upsetting the least upsettable man Troy had ever met.  

Harris looked at Roz, raising an eyebrow in the universal go on then movement. Troy looked at Rozanov too, realising he had literally no idea what was about to come out of the other man’s mouth.

“I’m gay,” Troy blurted out.

“We were being ageist, not homophobic in Scott Hunter’s gay bar,” Roz said at the same time.  

Troy briefly forgot to look at Harris, turning to look at Rozanov in utter disbelief.

“Are you fucking serious?” he asked, dumbfounded.

“What? Is not even untrue,” Roz said innocently, shrugging at him. “Hunter is a million years old, you can be ageist to him and he doesn't even care. Probably he can’t hear it, hearing is one of the first senses the elderly lose”

Troy felt slightly like he was going insane. “That was your perfect explanation? You were going to ask the Cens to put out a statement saying that we weren't being homophobic to Hunter, we just followed him to the gay bar he owns to harass him about his age?”

Roz nodded. “Good plan, no? Very believable, I think, my fans would definitely accept it. Harris agrees with me.”

“Harris does not agree with you,” Harris said.

Troy felt weirdly nervous as he turned back around to Harris. He hadn't exactly planned on coming out just then. He just hadn’t wanted to disappoint him, and, more than anything, he had wanted to see Harris smiling again. He wasn’t sure what he would do if Harris was still upset with him.

“So. You’re not homophobic, then,” Harris said. Troy couldn’t read his expression.

“Nope,” he said, swallowing. He looked down and then continued, “I’m definitely one hundred percent gay, I’ve known for a while, I just haven’t felt ready to come out yet. Roz took me to Hunter’s bar to introduce me to more queer players. It was actually really nice of him, it just.. Someone took a picture of us leaving and the internet went crazy, I guess.”

He risked a look up at Harris, bracing himself. His heart leapt. Smiling. Harris was smiling at him, a full on Harris Drover beam, crinkling his eyes and scrunching up his nose. It was the most adorable thing Troy had ever seen.

“I’m really sorry,” Harris said, giggling a little. “I should have known you guys weren’t homophobic - I did know, really, I was just-”

“It’s really okay, honestly, I would have thought the same-”

Roz made an obnoxious noise beside him. Troy had kind of forgotten he was still there. 

“Get a room, losers,” he chirped.

“This is my room,” said Harris.

“Oh, do you need it back? Should I give you lovebirds some privacy?” He was leering at them, eyes sparkling as he looked between Troy and Harris. Troy braced himself to endure a lifetime of mockery from Roz about this, but he found he didn't really care. Harris didn’t hate him!

“Fuck off, Rozanov,” he said, mostly out of habit, even though part of him would actually have liked to have some privacy with Harris.

Harris coughed, moving behind his desk as he dug through the stacks of paper piled up there. “We do actually need to discuss media strategy for this though. We definitely will not be telling ESPN you guys are just ageist - thanks for the suggestion though, Roz - so we need to figure out another explanation for why you guys were at the Kingfisher. Ilya, you’re pretty friendly with Hunter, maybe you could reach out to him and ask him to put up a short statement just explaining that you guys hang out sometimes off the ice.”

“I would rather kill myself,” Roz said immediately. 

Harris stared at him, horrified. He was too professional to say it, so Troy did it for him.

“Are you fucking serious?” he asked again, judging hard. 

“Absolutely. I would rather give birth to Hayden Pike’s fourteenth child than call Scott Hunter up to beg him for favor like a naughty child. And please do not ever say that I am friendly with Hunter again, this is deeply upsetting to me, I have a reputation to think about.”

There was a beat of silence as Troy, and presumably Harris too, struggled to find the words to respond to that. Roz just smiled at them innocently, like he was a completely normal, rational human being and they were the ones being unreasonable. Finally, Harris sighed, bracing himself against the desk. He looked like he could do with a coffee, Troy thought. It felt like this meeting had been dragging on for hours. A coffee would probably help in the long run, he’d get a lot more work done if he wasn't stressed. Maybe when it was over, he could offer to take Harris out for a coffee to unwind a little bit.

“What if we just tell the truth?” Troy said, surprising himself again.

“The truth?” Harris asked, frowning a little.

“Yeah, why not? I mean, I’m sick of being in the closet, I was honestly kind of thinking about coming out publically for a while now. I had been thinking about maybe doing it before our Pride Night in February, but I can do it now, it doesn't really make a difference to me either way.”

Harris paused. “Are you sure? I can help you to draft a statement, if you like, and obviously we’ll support you one hundred percent, plus I think it would be pretty amazing for the league to have another out player, but… this is a pretty big decision. I don’t want you to feel pressured into it because of things people are posting online.”

Rozanov was looking at him kind of intensely. “You should come out if that’s what you want,” he said, unusually serious. “But it should be because it's what you want, not what other people want for you. You don’t owe them this, you don’t have to come out before you want to if you’re not ready yet.”

Troy understood where they were coming from, but he already felt lighter than he had in years. It was an impulse decision, sure, but in some ways it had been building for ten years. More maybe. He tried to remember when he had first realised he was actually in the closet rather than just a late bloomer, and found he couldn’t. Sure, maybe the exact circumstances of his coming out weren’t what he had wanted, but he had spent a long fucking time in that closet and he was sick of it. He was ready to be out.

 “Yeah, I mean I’d like to tell the team first, and my mom - and my dad, I guess, but after that I’m good to go. Maybe if we post tomorrow, I can tell everyone now?”

There was another long pause before Harris smiled and Roz thumped him on the back, grinning at him.

“Look at you!” he crowed. “You were like sweet innocent little baby gay bird, all alone in the nest, until I put you under my wing and brought you to grandpa Hunter, and now you can fly all by yourself! You grew up so fast, soon maybe you will even have a boyfriend to share your nest with.”

“Fuck off,” Troy said, blushing and carefully avoiding eye contact with Harris.

“Just remember to always use protection, I am not old like Hunter, I am too young and sexy to be a grandpa.”

“Fuck.” Troy said, “Off.”

As some of you may be aware, recently there has been a lot of discussion online about a visit @rozanov81 and I took to the Kingfisher the last time we were in New York. For a long time, I felt split between two worlds. I believed that having the career I wanted to have meant keeping my sexuality a secret. I was prepared to retire without ever being fully true about who I am. It’s taken me a long time to get to a place where I feel comfortable enough to be open about my sexuality, and I owe a lot of that to the people who paved the way for me, and supported me along the road, like Scott Hunter, Ilya Rozanov, and the entire Cens team, who have been so incredibly welcoming, encouraging and supportive. I love you all, and I’m so proud to represent this team.   And just to be clear - I was at the gay bar because I’m gay 😉🏳️‍🌈🏒
