Thank you for all the love everyone but I feel I must clarify a few things. I am not bisexual. I am not queer. I am a happily married straight man. When I said ‘our community’ I was talking about the hockey community. I never meant for my words to be misconstrued in this way. I think that the work Scott, Shane, Ilya and the other Game Changers are doing for their communities is very important and I want to support them in any way I can to make hockey better for all of us regardless of race, gender, or sexuality.

Honestly I can’t believe anyone actually took the original tweet seriously. Like if you watched the actual interview the context of Hayden’s quote was clear.

Interviewer: The Metros have seemed like an entirely different team this season after Hollander’s transfer to Ottawa who seem to have gone from strength to strength. How do you respond to accusations that hockey has ‘gone woke’.

Pike: I mean of course the team is going to feel different this year, we lost our captain. It’s no secret that Shane was our star player but he was also the heart of this team and it was never going to be the same without him. But when it comes to those accusations I have to disagree I think what Shane, Rozanov, and Scott Hunter are doing is incredibly brave. They are committed to making the league a better and safer place for everyone in our community. Hockey is for everyone and they recognise that. The lives people lead off the ice should not affect how they play on it but that doesn’t mean those parts of their lives shouldn’t be part of a bigger conversation about how players are treated on and off the ice by their team, the league, and the fans. I hope that people realise their bigotry has no place in this league, this sport, or the world.
