Long airplane flights and long nights before
Summary
The team has an away game, on the way there one thing is noticable Luca and Young are very close but something changes after they celebrate their win.
When they get back to their airport, the two rookies are avoiding each other and refusing to meet the other's eyes.
Something clearly happened...
Notes
Dudes...
It happened.
The curse got me istg
I had this story written down fully already but my phone battery exploded 🫠
Yup, I didn't even think that was possible.
So I'm writing this from my new phone, a samsung flip 6 :) It was my dream phone for a long time so I'm so happy to get it finally.
But my phone exploding resulted in all the info getting deleted, including the notes app where this and a bunch more works were stored! So I'm rewriting this, it's probably not going to be as good but I wanted to post this already so I am, I hope it doesn't suck ♡
Chapter 1: Airport back and forth
When they got into the airport coach had one rule "Nobody stays behind" because even if they were technically all grown men, Weibe knew who he was dealing with.
Fortunately, or not so fortunately depending on perspective, Ilya immediately took this as his personal mission.
One would belive it started off as a joke, but it was very clearly serious after the third headcount before they headed to their gate.
Every few minutes, very literally, he was doing headcounts then checking passports and boarding passes.
"Where's Barrett?"
"...Bathroom."
"Tell me before you disappear."
"They're adults, Ilya." Shane insists from his lounging chair to which his husband just scoffs dramatically.
"It would hurt to tell me!" He insists and stands besides Hollander's chair.
Across from them Evan is explaining some group phone game to Wyatt and LaPointe, tho the latter obviously stopped listening 5 minutes in, resorting to scrolling on his phone and occasionally humming.
Right of them are another too rookies, tho not half as uninterested as LaPointe.
Luca and Young are sitting next to each other, drinking coffee and sharing headphones as they quietly discuss something only the two of them are aware of. Minutes before Boodram told them to "kiss already". Teasing, yeah. But they both seemed thankful nobody but them heard.
Then to the right side of Shane and his overbearing partner Troy just came back and is fighting off the accusations that he was facetiming Harris in the bathroom, tho Boodram insists he heard them.
Now, they got here an hour and half early and by the 40 minute mark it's starting to show.
Troy has another trip to the bathroom, tho this one he reports.
Wyatt gave up on the game Evan was showing him, resulting in Dykstra insists everyone play something together.
Surprisingly his idea didn't sink immediately and he, together with Boyle, LaPointe and Coach Weibe ended up playing UNO on two stacked suitcases.
Luca and Young went to McDonalds together, or as their captain described 'disappeared off the face of earth untill I found them at McDonalds!'
In reality Luca and Young unintentionally sneaked off to get lunch.
Their intention wasn't to not invite anyone else, they were just content being alone.
They walked to McDonalds while talking about the flight, the upcoming game, the weather, then Young took their stuff to take up a table and Luca stood in line for their order.
When he brought the meals to the table they both realised but didn't talk about the fact Luca knew what Young gets without the other telling him.
When Rozanov found them Young was stealing fries from Luca's plate and the other was laughing as he hit his hand.
Then Shane, who totally hates how organised and responsible Ilya is about all of this, also totally didn't kiss Ilya for the flavour of the cola he picked up while bringing back the rookies.
As their departure time neared Ilya restarted doing headcounts, checking passports and tickets.
He was a six-foot-something, objectively terrifyingly man who was a massive mama bear at the moment.
"Did everyone eat?"
"Who forgot their charger?"
"Have you gone to the toilet?"
"Go to the bathroom before we board then!"
"Wyatt, why do you only have one sock?"
"...where's the other sock?"
"I don't know."
"...Find it."
Then boarding finally comes.
And it... Goes smoothly.
Everyone has a ticket, they're first in line, everyone sits where they should, and then they're finally taking off.
》》》》》》》》》》》》》》》》
The game was gorgeous.
Those are the only appropriate words to describe it.
Everyone plays in union, the puck listens to them and only them.
The home advantage the other team has is lost in their dynamic completely and by the end they're up 6-2 and win with the same result.
The club is on fire afterwards.
Everything is on fire afterwards.
Shoots, drinks, dancing.
Bodies, music and the surprisingly lack of Haas and Young after 11 pm is all anyone recalls the next day.
Or the next morning.
If five am can even be considered morning when you go to bed at three thirty.
Coach walks into the hotel lobby to find half his team looking dead and the other half half dead because even the ones who didn't drink hadn't slept untill three.
Wyatt has sunglasses indoors, Troy is hugging a bottle of water, Evan is pulling his hoodie strings as far as they'll go willingly.
But coach is also greeted by a big smile and a heavily accented "Good Morning!"
Everyone groans.
By the second time they reach security, then their gate, everyone is dehydrated and half dead.
Except for their captain, of course.
He's russian and as he kindly pointed out, russians don't get hungover, nor do they blush.
Tho Shane has seen both of those and isn't mentioning the painkillers Ilya took both before sleep and in the morning for the sole reason of being anti-alcohol and thinking the guys deserve this if even a little for drinking mid season.
The little hungover left in Rozanov shows in the fact he didn't do a single headcount that morning, which nobody would really notice if Luca and Young hadn't showed up just half an hour before the flight.
They were both in sweatpants with hoodies on, along with both their hoods pulled on and the strings pulled.
They're carrying their backpacks, not looking at each other, immediately parting as they reach the team.
As they sit on opposite sides of the gate bench all of the teammates quite down and stare.
"What?" Young says first.
"Nothing." Shane reasures before anyone gets a chance to pry. He, if anyone knows how... confusing stuff can be.
And they don't question it, well they try not to.
Then Luca accidentally brushes against Young during boarding and fucking apologises.
Not only does he apologise but when he brushes past Young flinches.
Luca says "Sorry" without looking up from his boarding pass.
Youmg quietly says "it's fine".
And the teams starts whispering.
It's not with ill intention, they're genuinely concerned.
Yesterday they wouldn't leave each other's side, today they're practically strangers.
Troy whispers first when they take their seats in the plane "...Did they fight?"
Wyatt immediately agrees. "They definitely fought."
Evan shrugs without looking up from his phone. "They're going to get over it."
Shane adds in "Its not our business."
Ilya "It is absolutely our business. They're our team. We're the team, we don't fight each other"
Shane lets it go, because he knows.
He knows what anger looks like and this is not it, this is a much uglier emotion.
Embarrassment.
"Are they... Their tickets should still be together?" Troy asks. "We could lie everyone has to take their assigned spot."
"Yes!" Ilya agrees. "Let's do that."
Troy nods and stands up, telling everyone and soon seats are switched around.
LaPointe is with Rozanov, Evan is with Shane, Troy is with Bood, ..., but most importantly Luca and Young are together.
It quickly shows this idea sucked.
The whole airplane ride they're both extremely uncomfortable, getting away from each other as far as they can, not meeting the others eyes.
Everyone watches them closely the whole flight and it definitely wasn't a good idea because nothing happens except for a few very awkward moments that make everyone cringe.
Then they're off, grabbing bags and leaving the plane.
Luca gets into a taxi first, Young waits for the next one.
The team struges not to ask.
"They listened to me." Troy says and thats all that passes between them before everyone parts ways.
Chapter 2
"Give it back" Luca laughed as Young snatched another fry off his plate, making a show of licking it then offering it back
"Here, come on you want it back." Aiden laughed
"You're disgusting." Luca rolled his eyes and took a sip of his sprite.
"You love it." The other grined at him them raised his eyebrows. "Speaking of things you love..."
"There they are!" Their captain exclaimed as he got to their table. "Well thank you for telling me you'll go and wander off!"
"We just got lunch, we were hungry." Young shrugged. "Did anyone want something? We should have asked."
"Not the point, I was worried. Someone could have stolen you!" Ilya waves his hands around, gesturing to the busy airport.
"We're grown men, Rozanov. Nobody could have stolen us." Luca argues as the two rookies stand up. "But fine yeah, we should have reported. Lets go to the gate."
"It is a big deal, don't underplay it, Haas." Aiden smirks at him.
"See? Young understands." Ilya nods. "Now throw away the trash while I get a drink, they're playing UNO at the gate and I need to explain the rules again."
The younger men snort and clean up, then head back to the gate with their captain.
Soon after their lunch, and just after Luca won his second round of UNO, they started boarding the plane.
It was one of those smaller plains with just two rows of two seats so Luca and Aiden got to sit alone just the two of them.
Young took the window seat and Haas took the aisle one.
"I don't like this song," Aiden says, picking up Lucas phone and changing the music playing in their joint headphones.
"Please just don't play Panic! At The Disco again. I know all the lyrics to every song, we need to broaden the playlist." Luca complains, not looking up from his sketchbook.
"Fine." The other boy sighs and plays what Luca first thought to be Queen the figured to be a panic at the disco cover of Bohemian Rhapsody.
He then looks up to glare at Aiden but the other is alredy looking at him and grinning. "You see technically..." he starts
"Just shut up." Luca tells him, failing to hide the amusement in his voice.
Young chuckles and leans all the way over to Luca's side, sliding an arm behind him and tilting his sketchbook.
"Let me see. Uuu, that's nice." He says, inspecting Luca's newest drawing of himself. "Is it narcissistic that I like every drawing you've ever made of me?"
"Maybe? I dunno." Luca chuckles. "This one isn't even done tho. Look back out the window so I can finish."
"Fine, everything for art." He dramatically sighs and looks away. "I wonder if this is what Mona Lisa felt like when she sat for her painting, I'm drained. You owe me a drink when we win tonight."
"You don't know that we'll win." Luca says as he contours Aiden's nose.
"Ugh, don't let Rozy hear you talk like that. I love the support and enthusiasm but I can't handle any more of it for today." Aiden wrinkles his nose in memory and Luca reaches out without thinking to put his face back in place.
"Got it. We'll definitely win, don't move." He says, looking between Young and his sketchbook.
"As I said: Draining." He dramatically sighs but stays in positon.
When they finally land they pick up their keys and settle into their shared hotel room, Luca on the twin closer to the door and Young on the one closer to the window.
"What time is it? Do we have time to relax before the warmups and game?" Aiden asks as he takes off his shirt to change.
"Nope." Luca shakes his head. "Shower then straight to the arena. I never understood why they fuck up these schedules so much, couldn't we have came yesterday?"
"You can come every day if you have enough stamina, Haasy." Young says as he goes into the bathroom.
"You're disgusting." Luca laughs and throws a pillow his way but it hits the closed door as the other slips in.
After showering they get to the arena, warm-ups fly by and the game starts.
Their opponents scored first only five minutes in, but it barely rattled Ottawa. Rozy barked something from the penalty box that made half the team roll their eyes, then they answered with three goals before the first intermission anyway.
"See?" Young nudged Luca as they headed down the tunnel. "Told you we'd win."
"We're twenty minutes in."
"And I'm still right."
Luca only laughed at that.
By the third period the game had completely slipped out of the home team's hands. Passes connected, rebounds landed exactly where they needed to, and every lucky bounce seemed to end up on an Ottawa stick. The sixth goal emptied whatever fight the crowd had left, and the final buzzer sounded with the scoreboard reading 6-2.
Everything was loud afterwards, the locker room, the bus back to the hotel and even their hotel room as they got ready.
"Just a reminder you do owe me that drink." Aiden teased him as he pulled on a Nirvana merch t-shirt over his blue jeans.
"Just a reminder I never agreed to that." Luca grins and pulls a belt through his black jeans that are accompanied by a dark red t-shirt and red converse.
"Just a reminder I don't care." Aiden grins and walks to him. "Get your wallet out, rookie. I drink expensive."
"Have I ever told you how much I hate you calling me a rookie?" Luca sarcastically asls because he knows he did so at least a dozen times. "You're literally only a year older than me."
"Never." Young grins. "Plus a year is a looong time. You see when I was your age–"
"Oh shut up and grab your stuff, I'll pay for the damn drink." Luca says and opens the front door, checking his pocket for the room key.
"Of cours you will." Young says as he follows him out to the hotel lobby "And for food later."
"Don't push it." Luca shakes his head.
They join the team in the lobby then head out to a bar with everyone.
It wasn't anything special, some underground bar with cool lights and drinks with prices that make Luca forget his NHL salary and stare in horror.
The music was loud and the bodies around them were hot.
"Beer?" Aiden says into his ear and Luca nods, standing by a high table as he watches Young go to the bar and gets them two beers.
When he comes back he hands one to Luca and smiles. "How did I vollounter to pay again?"
"You just love spoiling me." Luca teases, taking a sip.
"Yeah, I'm your sugar daddy." Aiden laughs, leaning against the table.
"Who's looking for a sugar daddy?" Wyatt asks, joining them alongside Zane.
"Noone. Young 's just being a dick." Luca answers for them both as Aiden laughs again.
"As always." Aiden grins as LaPointe latches onto his back.
"Need a wingman, come on." LaPointe says and snatches him away.
Young laughs as he follows him to the bar.
Luca stays behind with the veterans and humms every now and then as they talk, pretending to listen as he watches Young and LaPointe talk to two cute girls.
It's not long after that when LaPointe takes the blonde one to dance and Aiden is awkwardly left with her brunette friend who seems... interested.
And Luca doesn't care, usually.
But he's almost finished his beer, he's a bit tipsy and so okay with her hand on his arm.
He's not jealous, of course.
Aiden gets with women every now and then, sometimes even brings them to their hotel room for a quick thing; and Luca has never had a problem with that.
But they also have a tradition of going out for a kebab on nights like this.
They leave a bit early, get greasy kebabs with all the fillings offered and eat them while sitting on the curb and commenting on the game, bar, drinks, the city they're in and whatever else comes to mind.
And Haas is just hungry. Just hungry.
Thankfully Aiden does excuse himself about fifteen minutes later and rejoins the team.
"Rookie, how did you fumble that?" Evan laughs, swinging an arm around Aiden's shoulders.
"Nah, wasn't feeling it." Young shakes his head, meeting Luca's eyes and gesturing toward the exit with his head.
Luca nods, finishes the second beer he started while Aiden was away and waits for the older players to start a conversation between themselves before he slips out with Young.
The night is chilly outside as they walk down the street.
"Wasn't feeling it?" Luca asks as they near a kebab shop. "Or are you just more excited about milking my wallet for dinner?"
"You know me too well." Aiden grins as they get to the front counter.
They both get red meat and all the topings and sauces, then eat while walking back to the hotel.
It takes about 20 minutes before they're in the hallway leading to their room.
"These are good but the ones we had last time were better." Aiden says, throwing away the wraper in the hallway trash before unlocking their room.
"Yeah. Those were way better, plus they had that bench upfront. I don't like walking and eating." Luca says, following him in and grabbing a tissue to clean himself off as Aiden strips off his shirt.
"Aww, poor baby. He had to walk and eat. Why is the world so cruel?" Young mocks, walking to him.
"Fuck you." Luca laughs, closing the blinds and walking to his bag.
"You wish." Aiden sighs and throws himself on his bed.
Luca scoffs and kicks off his converse as he pulls out his sketchbook.
"Noo," Aiden stands up, stopping Luca as he starts getting into his own bed "You barely talk when you draw and I'm bored."
"Let me go." Luca wiggles as the other man's arms stay wrapped around him, trying to grab the sketchbook.
"Promise to hang out." Aiden insists with his chin on Luca's neck.
"We'll hang out, fine." Luca laughs as Young squeezes tighter.
"Promise."
"I promise. Now let go." Luca agrees.
"Good." Aiden gets off of him but keeps the sketchbook hostage.
"Seriously?" Luca says as he watches Young get onto his own bed with the sketchbook.
"Yup. Come on, the fame got to you." Young teases "You're not the same rookie we got last season."
"Shut up." Luca laughs and joins him on Young's bed.
"So, whacha got here?" Aiden says, flicking the book open.
"You watch me draw all the time, it's the same stuff." Luca says and sits against the headboard next to Aiden.
"Yeah, I still like it tho." He shrugs. "You're really talented, have I ever told you that?"
"Shut up." Luca chuckles, leaning his head on Young's shoulder.
They stay sitting together on Aiden's bed, flipping through the sketchbook.
Young keeps making stupid comments until he lands on a page Luca forgot was there.
It's a sketch of Aiden asleep on the plane.
Not a quick doodle, its detailed, contoured. Something obviously drawn because Luca likes looking at him.
Aiden goes quiet for a momentbefore speaking. "When did you draw this?"
"Flight to Boston last month." Luca easily answers.
He keeps turning pages.
Young laughing. Young tying his skates. Young asleep on the bus. Young looking out a hotel window. Young eating fries.
Not just portraits. Moments. He knew Luca liked using him as a muse but this is... different. "...How many of these are there?"
Luca makes a face, pulling back to lean his head on the headboardand and stare at the ceiling. "Don't count."
"Luca..."
"Don't."
Aiden looks at him for a long second before saying, half jokingly, "...Am I your favorite person?"
"Obviously." Luca laughs
Young smiles a bit but let's it fade as they both watch the hotel ceiling. "I don't think that's normal."
"What?" Luca frowns
"I mean..." Aiden scratches the back of his head. "I don't think I should be disappointed when you spend ten minutes talking to someone else."
"You get disappointed?" Luca asks
"...Yeah."
A beat of silence passes between them.
"...I thought you were jealous of that brunette." Young finally says.
"I was jealous of the kebab." Luca admits
"What?" Aiden laughs in suprise
"I thought you'd stay with her and we'd skip the kebab." Luca explains
Young turns his head towards Luca and stares.
"...You were jealous...of food?"
"No!" Luca groans. "Of...the tradition."
"...Oh." Young nods, sliding down the bed with a sigh.
Another beat of silence.
"...Maybe a little of her."
Young starts smiling.
A stupid, growing smile. "You're an idiot."
"Says you." Luca scoffs, sliding down the bed with him.
They both laugh and when it dies naturally neither moves away.
They're laying side to side, watching the ceiling and Young quietly says, "Can I ask something?"
"Sure" Luca hums
"If I kiss you..."
Luca doesn't even let him finish. "Aiden, no."
"Hypothetically!" The other insists. "It's not like a thing or like anything. But we can..." he shrugs
"Well no. We can't. " Luca whispers as Aiden turns to him.
"We could." Young whispers, kicking Luca's foot with his. "Remember the first sketch you made of me?"
"Yeah, you hated it." Luca chuckles
"I said you made my nose too big." Aiden corrects "Because you did."
"Whatever, what about the sketch?" Luca asks
"I've still got the napkin." Aiden admits.
Luca turns to him. "Really? You kept that?"
Aiden shrugs. "Yeah."
"That's... cool." Luca nods and looks away but Aiden nudges him again.
"Remember your first NHL game?" Young says and Luca freezes. "You locked yourself in the equipment room."
"I wasn't crying."
"You absolutely were." Aiden chuckles
"I wasn't!" He insists
"You called yourself a disappointment." Aiden shrugs. "Didn't scare me off then."
"It's not the same." Luca shakes his head.
"Fine, how about this remember our first away game?"
Luca sighs. "What about it?"
"You spent twenty minutes apologizing because you snore." Aiden smiles
"...I do not."
Aiden laughs quietly. "You absolutely do."
"Barely." Luca turns to him with a smile.
"Like a chainsaw with asthma." Aiden laughs again.
Luca nudges him with an elbow. "Shut up."
"You were so embarrassed." Aiden smiles at the memory. "You kept saying, 'If I keep you awake, tell the coaches and they'll move me.'"
Luca groans. "I remember."
"I told you I'd just buy earplugs." Aiden recalls
"But you didn't." Luca says, turning more twoards Aiden without realising how small the twin bed is and how close they'll be.
"Still haven't." Aiden adds, leaning in.
Luca's breath hitches and he closes his eyes. "Ade..."
Young leans just a tad bit closer but doesn't close the distance, Luca does that, just moments later as he presses their lips together.
It's easy, almost like they've done this before. It's one of those perfect fairy tale kisses, soft and sweet.
Luca is the first to pull back, though only by a few centimeters. His forehead stays resting against Aiden's, his eyes still closed as he lets out a shaky breath.
"Well," Aiden whispers.
"Shut up."
Young grins. "I didn't even say anything."
"You were about to."
"I was." He agrees
Luca finally opens his eyes. Aiden's smile is softer than he's ever seen it.
"So..." Aiden murmurs. "Does this mean I can kiss you again?"
"Ugh, We really shouldn't." Luca says as he leans back in, pulling Young into a deeper, more passionate kiss.
This one lasts longer, Luca slides forward as they kiss, one of his thighs slipping between Aiden's as he gets on top, pressing his clothed chest to Young's naked one.
Hands wander everywhere, Luca's find their purpose in Aiden's soft hair as one of Aidens goes to his waist and the other slides down, grabbing his ass and making Luca moan.
"We really can't." He says but keeps kissing him.
When they eventually part due to the lack of oxygen, Luca hides his face in Aiden's neck.
"You okay?" Aiden asks him and Luca shakes his head.
Young sighs and rubs his back but doesn't say anything else.
They lay in silence untill Luca hears Aiden's breathing change and determines the other is asleep.
He then slips out and changes into sweatpants before going into his own bed.
In the morning it's... awkward to say the least.
They don't look at each other or talk, they pack in silence then go down for breakfast.
When they reach the lobby area Luca realizes the whole team alredy left.
"Should we get a taxi?" He asks
"Yeah, whatever." Aiden says, sounding almost mad at Luca.
Which is... probably fair.
So they get on the taxi and reach the airport.
The team is definitely surprised to see them.
Everyone shuts up and stares at them.
They try prying information out but Aiden quickly shuts it down.
When they get on the plane it's even worse because not 20 minutes in they come up with some ridiculous rule that forces Luca and Aiden to sit together.
It's the most awkward flight Luca has ever experienced but they do land relatively quickly and thankfully there's a taxi waiting in front of the airport that Luca basically jumps into as soon as he can.
They usually take a taxi together or Aiden drives them both home but not today. Definitely not today.
Today Luca gets a ride home alone and tries not to think about Aiden's soft lips and how awkward everything is.
