A Pale Gold Line
Summary
Breakfast waits, feelings linger.
Notes
This fic is a continuation of "Scrabble Is Boring Anyway" where Shane and Ilya invite Scott and Kip to Shane's lakeside cottage, which began here and now will be continued here.
A Pale Gold Line
The first thing Kip registers is weight.
Scott’s arm is draped heavy across his ribs, his breath slow and sleep-heavy against the nape of his neck. There’s another point of warmth near his shins where someone’s calf is tangled with his, and when he cracks one eye open, he finds Shane on his stomach, face half-buried in a pillow, one hand loosely curled around Kip’s wrist like he reached for it in his sleep and forgot to let go.
Ilya is the only one sitting up.
He’s propped against the headboard with a glass of water in one hand, scrolling his phone with the other, the screen brightness turned way down. The blackout curtains hold the room in a kind of perpetual dusk. It could be seven in the morning. Could be noon. Impossible to say. There’s a pale gold line seeping around the edges that suggests the sun is fully up and doing its job on the lake outside.
Kip doesn’t move. Doesn’t want to. His body feels like it’s been taken apart and put back together slightly looser. Every joint feels soft, every muscle unwound. There’s a low ache in his hips and his throat feels raw in a way that’s going to make coffee interesting, but it’s the good kind of wrecked.
Ilya glances down and catches him looking.
“Ah,” Ilya says, barely above a whisper. His voice is still rough from sleep. “Back with us?”
Kip tries to answer and manages a sort of croaky hum. Ilya’s mouth twitches.
“This is about right.” He sets his phone aside and reaches over to card his fingers through Kip’s hair, slow and absent, the way you’d pet a sleepy cat. “Scott got up for bathroom and almost broke his face on the dresser. Very graceful, your man.”
Behind Kip, Scott stirs just enough to mumble something that sounds like slander and then goes still again, his arm tightening briefly around Kip’s waist before relaxing.
The room smells like them. All of them. Sweat and sex and the specific musk of skin that’s been pressed together for hours, layered over the woodsy baseline of the cottage itself. Kip can smell Scott on himself, can smell Ilya too, something sharper underneath the salt.
The sheets are wrecked. Nobody cared enough to find the comforter. It’s still a navy heap on the floor somewhere, kicked off hours ago when four bodies generated more than enough heat.
Ilya’s mouth curves slightly.
Kip laughs, but it’s a punched-out sound that comes out soundless. His throat really is wrecked. He can feel the shape of last night in it. Ilya’s hand was in his hair then too, but different. Kip’s jaw aches now in the best way as he took what was given.
Shane stirs between them. His thumb brushes absently over Kip’s wrist—still asleep, probably. Ilya’s fingers keep moving through his hair, steady and unhurried. Scott exhales against his shoulder.
“He’s always graceful,” Kip manages, barely a rasp. “You should see him with a fitted sheet.”
Scott’s arm tightens again. “Heard that.”
“Good.”
Ilya’s fingers scratch lightly at Kip’s scalp, and Kip’s eyes flutter shut. He feels hollowed out and filled back up. Scott’s thumb is moving now, a slow drag across the jut of his hip bone.
“How long have you been awake?” Kip asks.
“A while.” Ilya’s voice is unhurried. “Watching you all sleep. Very peaceful. Like small animals.”
Scott huffs a warm breath against Kip’s nape, and his thumb keeps its slow circuit over Kip’s hip, tracing the same path like he’s memorizing it. “That’s what you were thinking? Not ‘wow, I really put these people through their paces last night’?”
“What kind of animal am I?” Shane asks, waking up.
Ilya’s hand slips from Kip’s hair as Shane stretches himself long, yawning. When Shane finally lets go of Kip’s wrist, Ilya considers it. “Otter,” he says, reaching over to brush a strand of hair from Shane’s forehead. “You sleep like one. All curled up, holding onto things.”
“What about Scott?” Kip asks, because now he has to know.
Ilya’s gaze flicks to where Scott is still mostly buried against Kip’s back. “Bear,” he says after a moment, mouth curving. “Grumpy when woken. Thinks he is in charge of cave.”
Kip feels Scott’s indignant chuff against his shoulder.
“He’s not wrong,” Kip rasps. He reaches back to pat Scott’s flank consolingly.
Scott shifts behind him, and his hand slides from Kip’s hip to splay warm across his stomach. “You’re all having a great time at my expense before I’ve even had coffee,” he mutters, pressing a kiss to the knob of Kip’s spine.
Shane props himself up on one elbow, blinking sleep from his eyes. His hair is sticking up in about five directions and there’s a pillow crease across his cheek. He looks between them, still catching up, then his gaze lands on Kip and he winces sympathetically. “Jesus, your voice. You want water? Tea?”
Kip nods. His throat feels like sandpaper in the best possible way, but yeah, water would be good. “Water first,” he manages. “Then maybe we see if I can form full sentences.”
Shane’s already moving, untangling himself from the sheets. He pads naked toward the doorway, and Ilya watches him go with something soft in his expression.
“I get tea started,” Ilya says, setting his water glass on the nightstand. He extracts himself more carefully, mindful of limbs, and drops a kiss to the top of Shane’s head as they pass each other near the doorway. “Hunter, coffee?”
Scott makes an affirmative sound against Kip’s shoulder blade, finally stirring enough to lift his head. “Yeah. Black.”
“No sugar, no milk, no joy,” Ilya says. “Of course.”
“Some of us don’t need dessert in a mug to function.”
“Yes. Some of us are boring.”
Ilya’s footsteps pad down the hall, and then it’s just the two of them, the morning light, the tangle of sheets gone cool everywhere Scott isn’t touching him.
Which leaves Kip and Scott.
Scott’s warmth is solid against his back. His hand slides up from Kip’s stomach to rest over his sternum, and Kip can feel his heartbeat against his spine. “You good?” Scott asks quietly, mouth close to his ear. Not performing for anyone else now.
Kip covers Scott’s hand with his own and squeezes. “So good,” he rasps. “Boneless. Might never move again.”
Scott huffs something that might be a laugh, pressing his forehead between Kip’s shoulder blades. His thumb strokes once across Kip’s chest, and Kip feels the exhale that comes with it. Relief, maybe. Or just Scott settling into the aftermath of last night.
“Good,” Scott says, and his voice has that particular rough edge it gets when he’s feeling things he doesn’t quite have words for yet. “You were really something last night.”
Kip’s about to answer when Scott’s hand slides to his hip and guides him onto his back, and then all that solid muscle is settling over him, Scott’s broad shoulders blocking out what little sunlight there is. His hips press down in a slow grind that makes Kip’s breath catch—or would, if he had enough voice left after last night.
“Scott,” he rasps, the sound wrecked and barely there, his hands coming up to grip biceps that flex under his fingers, and god, everything aches. His thighs, his throat, places he’s trying not to think about too hard. “We’re in their bed.”
Scott’s mouth curls up against Kip’s jaw, stubble brushing over his skin. “Yeah,” he says, rolling his hips again, and Kip can feel he’s already half-hard against where Kip is still tender and used. “And they left us here.”
Scott’s weight is a familiar comfort even as it makes everything in Kip’s body light up.
“They’re making us breakfast,” Kip manages, though his hips are already tilting up to meet Scott’s rhythm, his body betraying how wrung out and wanting he still is.
Scott’s mouth finds the hinge of his jaw, then lower, teeth grazing his neck where Ilya’s hand was last night. “Then we should probably work up an appetite.”
Kip’s laugh comes out as barely more than air, his hands sliding up Scott’s arms to his shoulders. “Pretty sure I already—” He breaks off as Scott grinds down again, more deliberate this time, and fuck, he’s sore everywhere but his body doesn’t seem to care. “Jesus, Scott.”
“That’s not a no,” Scott murmurs against his throat, and his hand slides down Kip’s side to hook under his thigh, spreading him open. The movement makes Kip acutely aware of every place he was thoroughly used last night and how empty he is now.
“It’s not a no,” Kip admits, tilting his head back to give Scott better access to his throat. His fingers dig into Scott’s shoulders. “But I’m—I’m still—”
“I know. I’ll be gentle.” Scott shifts his hips, letting Kip feel him, letting the pressure build. “Want to feel where I was last night.”
Kip’s breath catches, his whole body going tight at the words. He’s still slick from last night, still open, and when Scott’s fingers trace down to check, they both feel how easy it would be.
“You’re still in there,” Kip rasps, spreading his thighs wider, letting Scott settle between them. His voice is barely a whisper now, ruined and raw. “Didn’t use anything.”
Scott’s forehead drops to his shoulder, and the sound he makes is low and hungry. “Yeah,” he breathes against Kip’s skin. “I remember.”
His fingers press in, just barely, and Kip whimpers at the sensation, sore and sensitive and still so wet. Scott groans.
“Fuck, Kip.”
“That’s the idea,” Kip manages, hooking one leg around Scott’s hip to pull him closer. “Come on. Want to feel you again.”
Scott doesn’t need more invitation than that.
He reaches between them, lines himself up, and pushes in slow, so slow Kip feels every inch of the stretch, his body yielding around Scott like it was made for this. The soreness blooms bright and sweet, mixing with the fullness until Kip can’t tell where one sensation ends and the other begins.
“Oh,” Kip breathes, the sound barely there, his nails digging crescents into Scott’s shoulders. “Oh, fuck, that’s—”
Scott bottoms out and goes still, his breath ragged against Kip’s throat. His whole body is trembling with the effort of holding back.
Then…
Scott pulls back slow, then drives forward in one long stroke that punches the air from Kip’s lungs.
“That’s it,” Scott murmurs against his throat, setting a rhythm that’s deep and unhurried, savoring. Every thrust makes Kip feel how used he already is, how open, the slick sounds obscene in the quiet room. “God, you feel—still so wet from last night—”
Kip can’t answer, can only cling to Scott’s shoulders and take it, his voice reduced to breathless little sounds with every roll of Scott’s hips. The ache is everywhere now, bright and good, his body singing with it.
Scott pulls back just enough to catch Kip’s ankles and guide his legs up over his shoulders, folding him nearly in half. The next thrust drags right over that spot inside him that makes his vision blur.
“There?” Scott asks, like he doesn’t already know, and does it again before Kip can respond.
Kip nods frantically, fingers scrabbling at Scott’s back. His cock is trapped between them, leaking against his own stomach, and he’s so sensitive he thinks he might shake apart.
“Wanted this,” Scott breathes, pace quickening now, the headboard starting to tap against the wall. “Wanted to have you again. Just us.”
Kip’s head tips back into the pillow, his eyes fluttering shut as Scott drives into him again and again. His mouth falls open but nothing comes out. All he can manage are these desperate, airless sounds.
“Scott—” It’s barely a whisper, cracked and broken. His thighs are shaking where they’re pressed against Scott’s shoulders, his whole body wound so tight he feels like he might snap.
His eyes roll back as Scott shifts the angle and hits that spot dead-on, and Kip’s spine arches off the bed, fingers clawing at the sheets, at Scott’s arms, at anything he can reach. He’s fraying at the edges, coming undone stitch by stitch, and Scott just keeps going until he sobs, his whole body seizing up as he spills between them.
Scott fucks him through it, pace faltering as Kip clenches around him. Kip feels the pulse of warmth inside him, mixing with what was already there.
They stay like that for a long moment, tangled and trembling, Scott’s forehead pressed to Kip’s collarbone as they both try to remember how to breathe.
Eventually Scott eases Kip’s legs down, brushing a kiss against his sternum before surging forward. His lips find the space over Kip's heart, lingering there as he stills inside him.
A floorboard creaks in the doorway.
“Very efficient,” Ilya says, leaning against the frame with a mug in each hand, steam curling up between his fingers. His hair is still sleep-mussed and he’s wearing only a pair of grey sweatpants slung low on his hips. His expression is caught somewhere between impressed and deeply entertained. “Shane is downstairs making shakshuka. I come up to tell you breakfast is ready and find—” He gestures with one mug at the tangle of them on the wrecked sheets. “This.”
Scott doesn’t move from where he’s collapsed half on top of Kip, just turns his head enough to glare.
“You are in my bed, Hunter. Making very loud noises that I hear from kitchen.” Ilya takes a sip from one of the mugs, unbothered. “Also, you are welcome. For the show last night that clearly got you so worked up you cannot wait until after breakfast.”
Scott’s glare doesn’t waver, but there’s no real heat behind it. He’s too wrung out, too satisfied, Kip still warm and pliant beneath him.
“Your bed’s comfortable,” he says flatly. “Blame yourself.”
Ilya’s laugh is low and warm, filling the small room. He pushes off the doorframe and crosses to the nightstand, setting down the mugs. Coffee for Scott. Something honey-colored for Kip that smells like lemon and ginger.
“For your throat,” Ilya says, glancing down at Kip with something almost tender. “Shane’s idea.”
Kip tries to say thank you but what comes out is closer to a wheeze. Ilya’s mouth twitches.
“Very sexy,” he says. “Like dying bird.” He reaches down and ruffles Kip’s hair, the gesture oddly gentle, then turns back toward the door. “Five minutes. Shane gets sad when eggs go cold.”
Kip watches Ilya pad back toward the door, and his gaze drifts down without any conscious decision on his part. The grey sweatpants sit low enough to show the dimples at the base of Ilya’s spine, and the fabric does absolutely nothing to hide the shape of him underneath.
Scott follows Kip’s gaze and snorts. “Really? I’m still inside you.”
Kip’s laugh comes out as a rasp, and he pats Scott’s shoulder consolingly. “You’re inside me and I’m still looking. That should tell you something about the view.”
Ilya pauses at the doorway, glancing back over his shoulder. He’s clearly caught them both staring. His grin turns slow and knowing.
“Four minutes now,” he says, and disappears down the hall.

The kitchen smells like tomatoes and cumin, and Shane is standing at the stove in nothing but his boxers, pushing a wooden spoon through the sauce.
Ilya leans against the counter and watches him.
There’s something about Shane in the mornings that always gets to him before he’s fully awake, that little furrow between his brows when he’s concentrating. Right now he’s got a smear of tomato on his wrist and his hair is still doing that thing where it defies gravity on one side, and Ilya wants to put his mouth on the back of his neck.
So he does.
Shane startles, then melts back into it, tilting his head to give Ilya better access. “Thought you were bringing them coffee and tea.”
“I was.” Ilya’s lips move up to the spot behind Shane’s ear. “Got distracted.”
“By what?”
“By you.” Ilya’s arms slide around Shane’s waist, careful not to jostle the spoon. “Standing here. Looking like this.”
Shane huffs a laugh, but Ilya can feel the pleased warmth radiating off him. “I look like I rolled out of bed and directly into breakfast duty.”
“Yes.” Ilya presses a kiss to his shoulder. “Is very good look on you.”
The sauce bubbles, and Shane stirs it again, leaning back into Ilya’s chest. Morning sun slants through the windows here and catches the copper pans hanging above the stove.
“How are they?” Shane asks.
“Fucking,” Ilya says, and feels Shane’s startled laugh vibrate through his chest. “In our bed. Very enthusiastic. Hunter has stamina, I give him this.”
Shane shakes his head, but he’s still smiling. He reaches for the eggs, cracking them one-handed into little wells in the sauce with a practiced motion that makes Ilya unreasonably attracted to him. “Tell me you at least gave them privacy.”
“I gave them tea and coffee and a four-minute warning. This is generous, I think. They are in our sheets. Making them very dirty.”
“Dirt-er, maybe.”
Ilya huffs a laugh against Shane’s neck, arms tightening around his waist. “Yes, okay. Dirtier. This is fair point.” He watches Shane settle a lid over the pan, the eggs beginning to set in their little tomato nests. “You are not bothered?”
Shane turns in his arms, leaning back against the counter. His expression is soft, open in a way he only ever is in private. “After the four of us spent last night doing what we did? No. I’m not bothered.”
Ilya studies Shane’s face for a moment, searching for any trace of doubt or discomfort, and finds none. Just warmth, and that particular softness Shane reserves for moments like this.
He leans in and presses a kiss to the corner of Shane’s mouth.
“Good,” he murmurs against his skin. “Because I am thinking...”
Shane’s eyebrow lifts, a smile tugging at the corner of his mouth. “That’s usually dangerous.”
“I am thinking,” Ilya continues, undeterred, his thumb tracing slow circles on Shane’s hip, “that Hunter left Kip very full this morning. And maybe after breakfast, I see how much more he can take.”
Shane laughs, the sound bright and surprised, and pushes lightly at Ilya’s chest. “Ilya, no! The man can barely talk. His voice is gone. You wrecked his throat last night and Scott just—” He shakes his head, still grinning. “Give him a break. Let him eat breakfast and drink his tea like a human being.”
“I am very gentle,” Ilya protests, but he’s grinning too, unrepentant. “I am most gentle person. Ask anyone.”
“I’ve seen you check people into the boards, Ilya.”
“This is hockey. Different context.” His hands slide to Shane’s hips, thumbs hooking into the waistband of his boxers. Ilya steals another kiss, then releases Shane to reach for plates from the cabinet above. “Come,” he says, pressing one last kiss to Shane’s temple. “Time to feed our guests.”
Afterword
End Notes
All of you are the real MVPs. I don’t think I would’ve finished this one (at least not nearly this soon!) without all your comments and encouragement.
You may have noticed that Ilya took a sip from one of the two mugs he'd been carrying before handing them both over. Scott got the coffee, Kip the tea. That means Ilya helped himself to one of the mugs, and in my mind, it was the coffee. But Scott is far too fucked-out to notice, or care, that Ilya’s already had his mouth on the rim.
