covered in love
Summary
Ilya’s rough days are made easier by Shane – even if he’s not there.
In a world where clothes and other belongings hold power, especially if they are handmade, Shane has more avenues of taking care of Ilya than his mere presence.
Notes
Quite a few comments on the original fic in this series asked about the quilt, so here we are!
Thank you again to Kiwi_kill3r for encouraging me ^^
Each scene below is its own perfect drabble
bc that is how we roll in here
covered in love
“Hey.” Shane’s voice is soft, dampened further by the stale air of the bedroom. The lump under the covers that shifts at his words.
“Hey,” Ilya replies, hoarse.
Shane smiles despite himself. “On a scale of having to say nice things about Scott to being beaten by him, how bad is today?”
Ilya splutters and then laughs, tired but there. When he shifts again, the covers slip off far enough to reveal that he is not bare-chested.
“Did my shirt not fit?” Shane knows it does, so why is Ilya not wearing it?
“Did not want to taint it.”
“… Ilya.”
Shane’s shirt, in the end, does help. And he’s probably right; years of use and hours of love poured into stitches that from tiny hockey sticks all along the side seams won’t be undone by one bad day.
“And you’re wearing it,” Shane says quietly, like he can read Ilya’s mind. He’s half on top of Ilya: a human weighted blanket. “That strength – to keep trying… that will only make it stronger.”
“It is good thing you are hockey player and not therapist.”
“Hey, I’m trying.”
“I know. And that is strong, too.”
“… I see what you mean.”
Ilya smirks.
“Hey. Uh… next time. If it gets bad. And I’m… not at hand…” Shane trails off. Looking at Ilya right now is hard, and his heart is in his throat, and all of this is stupid because he knows Ilya won’t reject him. He’s pretty sure, at least. “If I’m not there, there’s –”
With a frustrated sigh, Shane yanks the drawer open and pulls out a quilt. There’s so much love in it his breath catches in his throat. Ilya’s eyes track him, but he doesn’t say a word.
“Take this, okay? It’s – please.”
Silence. Then: “Thank you.”
“Of course.”
Bad days without Shane suck. They come with brain fog, and no refills of Ilya’s water glass by the bedside table, and a gaping, aching loneliness that Ilya does not have the energy to attempt covering.
They are few and far between, though, and so he does not think of the quilt until Shane calls him because Ilya has ignored all his texts checking in.
“Get the drawer,” Shane instructs him, brooking no argument.
Ilya does, and then wraps himself in the quilt, and –
Oh.
It’s not like having Shane there.
But it does fill the void, just a little.
