Good Lookin'

by RayByAnotherName

Summary

Dykstra introduces Ilya to gay country music, because he is an Ally with a capital A.

Set Pre Relationship Reveal, Post Troy Coming Out

Notes

Yes, this song did come out a few years *after* this era in their relationship, but for narrative reasons lets pretend otherwise.

Every time I read Something about Dykstra liking country music, I had the urge to write this, and today I finally did. XD

Good Lookin'

Ilya groans the moment he steps into the locker room. A round of laughter follows and he levels his gaze on Dykstra as the familiar croon of country music continued to fill the space.

"It is pride night, can't we let Barrett pick the music?" Ilya gestures vaguely towards the man in question and Troy pauses with his shirt in his hand, brow furrowed. He rolls his eyes when Ilya continues, "Would still be terrible choices, but with a beat."

"That's cold, Cap," Dykstra brings a hand to his chest, sniffling dramatically, "I may not recover in time to play." Now Ilya is the one rolling his eyes.

He moves to his locker with a sigh, ignoring Dykstra when the defenseman reaches for his phone. The mischievous grin hardly a concern. Ilya is meaner than him, after all.

"Since you care so much about pride night, Roz, I'll pick something thematically appropriate," Dykstra announces with a dramatic bow.

A new song starts, a slow pick of guitar strings giving way to some sort of romantic ballad. Ilya only half listens as he starts to change.

There's something 'bout the way you look in my eyes.
Like a starry night, you light up my sky

The lyrics are quite romantic, Ilya will admit that. Not aloud, of course, but this is certainly one of Dykstra's better picks.

You lean in closer and my heart starts to pound
I heard you sigh, you know I love that sound

Ilya kicks his shoes off. As he pulls his shirt over his head, the song picks up. Only slightly, because Dykstra never picks anything with a fast beat.

His heart races a bit anyway, when the Ilya processes the lyrics. The translation turning over and over in his head.

He's bouncing off my booty cheeks, I love the way he rides
I can hardly breathe when he's pumping deep inside

"What is this?!" Ilya gasps, head snapping around, eyes wide. Dykstra shrieks with laughter. The entire locker room frozen as the song continues.

I kiss him on his neck and then he kisses on my bussy
Call him "Daddy" while I holler, man, that boy's so damn good looking

Gay sex. The song is about gay sex. Haas actually chokes, face flushing with color. Barrett's cheeks are bright red.

Dykstra smirks, humming along while his entire team devolves into chaos around them. Bood has started dancing. Some facsimile of a line dance that Tanner and Chouinard are quick to join him in.

We made love and then he kissed me, I don't want it to end
Every day we spend together, I fall morе into him

All Ilya can do is stare at them all, eyes wide and mouth agape. His mind is reeling trying to process this. Not just the lyrics - which are thankfully simple and spoken slowly enough for him to translate even in his shocked state - but the very existence of the song itself.

It is uncomfortably familiar at that. The sharp shift from explicit to romantic. Ilya cannot help but think of Shane.

That boy he takes my breath away, I can't find thе words to say
So I wrote this little note, kiss it, seal it, so you know

The chorus starts up again and a smile twitches at Ilya's lips when several of his teammates attempt to sing along. Dykstra included.

None of them are any good at it, but they make up for it with their enthusiasm.

Ilya glances towards Troy, checking on his reaction. He's hiding a little smile and Ilya arches an eyebrow. Troy just shrugs when he catches his gaze.

"It is thematically appropriate," Troy says and Dykstra cheers. He bounces on the balls of his feet, queuing up another one.

Apparently, there are several gay country songs. Ilya knows the words to all of them by the time the game starts. He doesn't add them to his pregame playlist - not a single one has the right tempo for him - but he does make anothert. Just for them.

If he happens to send one of the songs to Shane right before their next game against the Voyageurs, well... it's not the first time they've played hard against each other.

The song is quite motivating as it turns out. Ilya will certainly enjoy the way Shane rides after his defeat.
